Receiving Disturbing Cards

Name changed because it's outing.

DH and I have been together for twenty three years and have two teenage children.

Last year, about a week before mother's day, I received a mother's day card with my name written inside and then a heart. Nothing else. I didn't recognise the handwriting. It was posted from a city which is at the other end of the country (NE and I live in the SW). My street name was misspelled on the envelope.

I was freaked out by it, but ignored it after a while.

We've been away this weekend, but have just found another one in our letterbox. Similar To My Mother card, with my name and heart. Written in the same green pen, it seems.

This time there's no address, stamp or postmark on it, which is really worrying. It just has my name on her front. Unfortunately our Ring doorbell has run out of battery and we haven't charged it.

Do you think I should contact the police? DH thinks I should, but I don't want them to think I'm wasting their time.

I definitely do not have any other children.

Thank you. It seems there’s no support for this sort of thing .I asked the police if there were any domestic abuse type of charities that could help me. The police just said no as my situation is not the norm. So I’m just left to cope alone.

i am feeling as let down as I did when I contacted the police all those years ago when I was being attacked and they didn’t help.

in your case go to the police just incase. I would say from my own experiences of life and men it’s 95% likely to be some awful man. 💐 have you ever dated someone awful like my ex?

I was told by the lovely woman in Women’s Aid that my ex husband was abusing me through the Court System and that the family court in Ireland is not fit for purpose. In the divorce order he was told he had to sign passport forms for our DDs. He refused and I had to bring him to court to get it sorted. Thr judge was not impressed when he saw the court order! In fact the judge made a new order dispensing with ex h signature. He had court papers served on me as I walked out of our estate to go to work one money. He turned up at my work to try and give me papers for court. In fact he still bringing court cases to the High Court, suing the free legal aid board, the solicitors he had for our court separation and divorce and the solicitors I had for the legal separation and divorce. This is 14 years later! He asked our younger dd if she would go to court recently to see him as the star in whatever drama he’s at now. He would try to involve our DDs and ask them to ask me why I was not helping him with his court cases. There are files on him in the District Court, Family Court and I’d say the High Court. I used to dread opening the post especially large envelopes because he would have pages and pages of documents he was lodging in court. I started shredding the papers a while back and I’m still at it! They would run to 60 or 70 different points in paragraphs that he thought were unlawful. Sorry for ranting.

Purely on the bike thing & as you're in a rural area, some contemporary off-road cycling helmets do look very like motorcycle helmets so that could just be someone on their way to get tired & muddy.

I’m so sorry. These situations are horrific.

I was finally coming to terms with it all, took me twenty years to get to that stage had a breakdown and therapy in that time, and then I’m not ok again as I’m sent a death threat. I just want to know when it will finally end.

due to this if I was receiving post like the op I’d be even more of a nervous wreck.

PixellatedPixie · 01/03/2026 22:43

Something that stands out to me is that if the sender left a year between sending cards to you, then I’d imagine they aren’t being impulsive or trying to threaten or cause trouble for you. It would align more with it being a mistaken identity. Sending the cards a year apart means they are really not trying to get some sort of reaction from you? I find be wrong though…

Ye gods! What a loon. Have you tried to get him declared a Vexatious Litigant? That would at least stop him harrassing you with his legal nonsesne.

Teenthree · 01/03/2026 22:45

I’m voting for teen dickery. When I was in my teens we used to point out awful things/people to each other and say “that’s you in your best gear” etc and I sent a postcard (back in the day when they were a thing) of a cow with massive udders, to my friend and all the card said was “That’s your mum, that is.” We found it hysterical. Poor Evans, not so much.

catnap56 · 01/03/2026 22:46

If it were mistaken identity how would the person have got OPs address? It’s weird I would be unnerved too.

double0seven · 01/03/2026 22:47

If I remember correctly hospital Pharmacists use green pens.
Is it possible your DH has had a child outside of your marriage that you are unaware of and this child is now an adult and trying to force this out into the open ? ( you would be Stepmother).
It's a bizarre theory but so is riding a pushbike wearing a crash helmet.

How old are your children? Very likely it’s one of your child’s friends if they are now adults (and suffering poor mental health)

if it was me I would assume it was my horrid SIL, just the type of psychotic shit she would do. Any chance you also have a cunt for a SIL?

😅🤣😂

onelumporthree · 01/03/2026 22:52

Accountants also sometimes use a green pen. I've got one.

If it were mistaken identity how would the person have got OPs address? It’s weird I would be unnerved too.

Now I come to think of it, a guy I used to know who fancied himself something of a conceptual artist, picked people at random from various open-access directories & for years sent them Xmas cards & postcards from his holidays with messages like, "hope you're all well & there's been no return of the old trouble!", "I still wonder if you ever got that dog." & so on, all signed with only a first name. It's not impossible that the OP is receiving cards from a similar poseur.

Blimey, I haven't thought of him in years. Wonder if he's still at it?

TreatyPie · 01/03/2026 22:54

Did you take a pic of that first card and eg whatsapp it to family? If so, can you share a photo with us? You never know who on here might be able to identify/come up with something interesting that could help solve this.

I think the person was always local and sent the first card while away visiting someone/on holiday. They have to be for the second card to have reached you.

The green pen makes me think editor/teacher.

The structure of using Mrs J Doe to address the envelope combined with cursive makes me think of someone aged 50+.

I find it interesting that in Year 1, they were away while you stayed local, then in Year 2 they were local while you were away.

Where was the woman who fed your cat last year when you received the card?

Well he’s stopped harassing me. I think all the solicitors firms were trying to get him declared a Vexatious Litigant! His modus operandi seems to be get refused what he wants in one court and then bring the same thing to a Higher Court! He was trying to get his refusal for Legal Aid to sue all the solicitors firms to the European Courts of Human Rights at one stage🤣.

The doorbell is currently charging

How is the doorbell going to help? if it was posted, its simply delivered by the post man

TreatyPie · 01/03/2026 22:55

Doubt it's a prank as who has the patience to wait an entire year to repeat such a soft core "prank"?

double0seven · 01/03/2026 22:57

Many years ago I was single having split from my partner I had been living with. At Christmas I received a Christmas card that wasn't signed. I presumed the sender didn't know my name as it wasn't written on the envelope or inside the card. The sender wrote something along the lines of, wishing me a happy Christmas but that I always appeared very aloof (?). There were £25 Debenhams vouchers in the card. I never found out the identity of the sender.

Hope you get to the bottom of this.

marmaladejam1 · 01/03/2026 22:58

Uncle???? Seems likely to me. Your uncle, not your kids. Presuming you have one, if you don't I'm wrong. It's the lovely cursive writing ( my elderly uncle has that) , and knowing your details. Sorry , just a stab in the dark. How awful.

How long have you lived at your current address? Could it be someone who thinks they have traced their birth mother and it was a previous occupant?

That would certainly be a possible explanation This sounds like a disturbed individual who thinks their mother might live at your address.

CuriousKangaroo · 01/03/2026 22:59

ShakyBake · 01/03/2026 18:01

I have to ask the obvious question. Did you once have a secret affair but blocked it from your mind?

And forgotten she had given birth??

The OP states more than once that the second card didn't have an address, stamp or postmark on the envelope, so was clearly hand delivered.

It had no postmark / stamp / address etc - so not delivered by PM

Correcting myself, I re read the OP and saw the second one is hand delivered.

Likely then the sender is local to do that, but may have been in the area that the first card was sent, when it was sent, does that ring any bells for anyone you know?
