Any movies or tv shows that got to the grand finally and you were like "what the actual fuck!"

Mine was Lost. Felt it was a rushed lazy ending.

OP posts:

The last episode of Dexter was pretty grim too.

Sons of anarchy! Worst ending ever

I disagree. Thought it was a good proper ending

One day makes me angry too. They spend the entire plot making Emma be responsible for making Dexter into a better person and what thanks does she get? It's definitely a plot written by a man.

Hard agree. Plus, I don’t consider it a happy ending when Rachel gave up her dream job and career to be with Ross of all bloody people.

This absolutely although not many people irl agree with me.

scalt · 01/03/2026 19:31

The Witches, the 1990 film, which was given the happy ending of the hero being changed back into a boy. Legend has it that Roald Dahl hated this ending, and stood outside his local cinema with a megaphone, telling people not to see the film, in his dying year.

Also, if a book is allowed: the short story "The Serial Garden" by Joan Aiken, in which a boy builds a cardboard model garden, which grows into a real garden; until the boy's mother burns the model. Apparently, readers of the book (decades ago) were really angry and upset about the ending.

ChopstickNovice · 01/03/2026 19:32

Another vote here for HIMYM. So crap.

How I met your mother series 9 made me so angry it destroyed any chances of me being able to enjoy the earlier ones again. A whole series about a couple's wedding, only for them to divorce just after and she gets together with someone else! They never should have introduced the mother, as no one can live up to an 8 series intro. Just have Ted bumping into someone and starting to turn around, then tell the kids that's how I met your mother.

same! And the “hey kids, so your mom’s dies, but whatever” and the kids “ohmergad dad!! It’s Robyn who’s your true love!! Not mom!! Go get some!!!” 🤯🤯🤯

My Sister’s Keeper, based on the book by Jodi Picault. The book had a brilliant plot twist right at the end, which the makers of the film completely omitted and made a very predictable ending. Just why???

YES!! Absolutely ridiculous. Took away the main purpose of the book.

Teachertired92 · 01/03/2026 19:41

Behind her eyes on Netflix. What even was that ending!!?!

Upholstery · 01/03/2026 19:49

Oh that was utter garbage.

True to the book! A bit better explained in the book.

Upholstery · 01/03/2026 19:51

Well the book sounds shit too.

I had mixed feelings about it, for sure. I did like the bit where Louise ( Rob) looks malevolently at the child!

The ending of Lost didn’t bother me. I’d resigned myself to the fact they didn’t know what they were doing in about season 3. The only thing that annoys me about it is the amount of people who still think they were dead all along! 🤣

Slightly different but an ending I hate/makes me feel horrible is the film The Mist. I really like the film but can’t watch the ending.

When it first aired I watched seasons 1,2 and most of three hut fell away. Last year we decided to binge watch it all. I'll be honest, I had not a clue wtf was going on half the time! I am one of those who thought they died in the crash!

Gotback · 01/03/2026 20:32

The music played over the end of the last episode of Breaking Bad was just awful. Really middle of the road, cheesey rock. Such a shame.

Line of Duty. Just such a disappointment.

Hard agree!!

I was super pissed at that ending.

And Jed Mercurio using it to make his little political point and being all “Well that’s how it is in real life”.

If I wanted to watch real life stuff Jed, I wouldn’t tune into a television DRAMA 🤯🤬

Yeah, I’m still annoyed 😂

I was disappointed by the final, final, one off, The Detectorists. The final of series 3 was perfect but then the one off programme showed that Andy never lived in his perfect house because of a fire. Any and Lance never got the credit for their finds at the end of series 3. Lance and his girlfriend didn't work out. It was so sad.

I agree. Why, why ,why was there any need to have the fire??? It wasn’t even as if it was shown or referred to in any way which helped the plot.

shitty shitty ending!!

My first thought.

It's got to be GOT. Doubly annoying because there was no need for it to be so rushed - the studio was happy to finance them for multiple seasons and/or movies, the actors were happy to carry on (tbf the best thing about the final season was most of their reactions when doing press and being asked whether they were happy with it!), it was just the producers who thought they had a better offer who decided to wind it up in 6 episodes rather than losing their ego and handing it over to someone else if they didn't want to carry on....ironically their better offer then ended up getting cancelled before it was ever made due to the backlash!

Gossip Girl was another one, the ending (big reveal) didn't even make sense!

tbh I'm struggling to think of really good endings! Lots of TV shows (particularly US ones) suffer from not ending soon enough and dragging on, to the point I haven't seen most of the endings mentioned because I got bored!

The final season of Buffy was a bit crap but I thought the ending was decent enough, although most of the season finales were better.

I didn't mind most of the ending of GOT, but the worst bit was the fight arya had with the knight king. After building him up for so long as this big boogey man, it was literally over in 2 minutes. I was expecting a massive epic battle but it was such an anticlimax lol.

The real house actually burnt down between the end of the series and the Christmas special. But they could have just used a set and not shown the outside.

Yes! We don’t need real life, we want escapism! It was such a wonderful experience pre-ending, everyone talking and discussing who H was and then …
It was as if someone poured cold gravy over our trifle.

I remember finishing the last episode and just staring at the tv, shouting “What the fuck was that??!!”

What is the writers room please?

Sorry only just saw this as am in the middle of moving house and only have a semi-reliable mini hub until the fibre optic engineer comes next week. It's basically a group of writers who work together to create scripts for specific television programmes - so it's not written by a single person but in collaboration. I've just checked and my friend worked on series four - so definitely not responsible for the finale! Phew!

I’m so glad you know that Aiken book, @scalt! I read it to my children years ago and it made me truly devastated. I still see the book on the shelf and think maybe somehow this time the boxes won’t get thrown away (but I’ve also got the vaguest memory of there being a sequel book where it does get addressed?). Absolutely heartbreaking.
