If you are 50 or over...

(light hearted!)

do you own (and use) a dishwasher? DP and I were looking at self-catering properties and he's happy to pick one without a dishwasher. For me there's no way I'll be washing the dishes by hand. We've both over 50 and there's no way I'll do any 'manual work' unless it's absolutely necessary! Especially while on holiday. I love our dishwasher and I put pretty much any kitchen item in it unless it's electrical or wooden (although wooden spoons and spatulas do go in).

If you're 50 or over, how keen are you on your dishwasher? Would you be happy to live in a home without one? Or go on holiday where you have to do the washing up?

I’m not washing up by hand ever. Not a chance!

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/02/2026 17:15

God yes. Although I loved my dishwasher before I was 50, too.

SirChenjins · 26/02/2026 17:16

I'll wash up by hand if absolutely necessary, but I won't be happy! First world problems etc. I've had a dishwasher for decades now, not just a recent thing.

I don't need one on holiday as I'm not cooking much more than cups of tea, and maybe a bit of toast or a bowl of crisps.
I like SC for the extra space & freedom but never cook a proper meal in them.

dolorsit · 26/02/2026 17:16

I don’t own a dishwasher but I do have a teenager. When said teenager leaves home I suspect a dishwasher will go to the top of the list 😂. For holiday let’s I’m not bothered about a dishwasher as I am not likely to be cooking using lots of pots and pans.

when I have stayed at places with friends that do have a dishwasher I’ve always got away with not loading it because I don’t know how!

How can you not know how to put dishes in a rack?

JKGalbraithsTable · 26/02/2026 17:17

I don’t have a dishwasher. When we go on holidays places that do have a dishwasher or when I visit my mother or my in-laws all we seem to do is swill plates in the sink and put them in the dishwasher then take them out of the dishwasher and put them away. It just seems to be another massive chore and I don’t see where the time saving is…

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 26/02/2026 17:17

I'm only 45 so I don't know if you want me to answer 😉 but the dishwasher comes a close second to my bed as my favourite thing in the house. I could do without one on a short holiday, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2026 17:17

I wouldn’t be without a dishwasher at home. But it’s certainly not a dealbreaker if we’re choosing self catering accommodation - I’d just avoid making anything which made very messy washing up. Actually quite often our ‘self catering’ is on a boat, obviously those don’t have dishwashers!

damsela · 26/02/2026 17:18

I have one, it's used for storing the big packets of kitchen towels at the moment ha ha. I live alone and don't have much to wash up, so it only takes a few minutes, and I air dry on the rack beside the sink. Different for families I know. Of course I'll use the d/w when there's a few more people around!

Boxthree · 26/02/2026 17:18

In a self catering holiday cottage the most I'd be washing up is a couple of mugs/wine glasses and maybe a plate or bowl for breakfast, so I wouldn't prioritise a DW when booking a holiday.

At home I wouldn’t want to be without it, but when it's just me, I do wonder why I use it. Emptying it and cleaning the filter etc probably creates as much work as the small amount of washing up I create. (DP lives elsewhere).

Hadalifeonce · 26/02/2026 17:19

I wouldn't go on a self catering holiday, dishwasher or not, same shit as at home, just a different venue.

FlowerFairyDaisy · 26/02/2026 17:19

I have one but wouldn't care if I didn't - or if holiday accommodation didn't have one.

Why do you do that then? You’re not supposed to rinse them first, just shove em in, and then take them out clean.

Ponderingwindow · 26/02/2026 17:20

I’m over 50. Self-catering is not a holiday to me. I’m not doing chores somewhere else. I like having a kitchen, but at most I’m heating up leftovers from our restaurant meal or making a bowl of cereal.

smallchange · 26/02/2026 17:21

I've never owned a dishwasher but I would love to have one. We'll need to get a new kitchen sometime in the next few years and I'm determined to find space.

So, it's a must-have for me when I go on holiday - we live in a "modest" sort of property and I expect my holiday houses to be better than where we live so book accordingly.

Seasidegrandma · 26/02/2026 17:22

I chose a dishwasher rather than a washing machine, when I moved into current property, as their was only room for one machine.
On holiday I'm not too bothered

quantumbutterfly · 26/02/2026 17:22

I like the illusion of tidiness while I gradually fill it with the snacky detritus of the day. It's economic with water but hot enough to kill germs. Jobs a good un.

FrenchandSaunders · 26/02/2026 17:23

I'd have two dishwashers if my kitchen was big enough .... never unload it properly. Just take clean from one and put it dirty in the other and rotate.

I'm not fussed about a dishwasher in a holiday home as we don't eat much in it, bit of brekkie, snacks.

FrenchandSaunders · 26/02/2026 17:24

I don't rinse either, just scrape into the food bin. I went on holiday with a friend who wash up the dishes properly in the sink, full of bubbles, then put it all in the dishwasher 😂

MagpiePi · 26/02/2026 17:24

I absolutely loved my dishwasher whilst my kids were growing up. I still used it after they left home and I was on my own but I’d often run out of things, plus I still had to wash up pans and chopping boards and things by hand. The dishwasher broke a couple of months before I moved house and I thought I’d get a new one at the new house, but I decided to do without one and don’t mind. I’m not bothered about leaving dishes for a couple of days.

I’ve also found recently that dishwasher tablets contain ‘forever chemicals’.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 26/02/2026 17:25

Omg has to have a dishwasher.
We spent a wonderful week in Tuscany last year.

Ate in every night but one.

So much amazing food in Italy I LOVE going to the supermarket and choosing new things to cook. Used every pot and pan and had the dishwasher on daily.

I do not wash pans ever. And I pay the extended warranty on every dishwasher as if it needs fixing, it needs to be fast!

ChaToilLeam · 26/02/2026 17:25

Never had a dishwasher and don’t really care. We only have space for a washing machine - now that is something we couldn’t do without. On holiday I wouldn’t expect to be doing much cooking anyway.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 26/02/2026 17:25

We don’t have a dishwasher at home. I’ve never had one. Didn’t grow up with one. We can both wash up it’s fine. We don’t stay sc though, we stay in hotels or b&bs.

That’s crazy, yes you just scrape food off and put them in, switch on and then empty when done.
