If you are 50 or over...

(light hearted!)

do you own (and use) a dishwasher? DP and I were looking at self-catering properties and he's happy to pick one without a dishwasher. For me there's no way I'll be washing the dishes by hand. We've both over 50 and there's no way I'll do any 'manual work' unless it's absolutely necessary! Especially while on holiday. I love our dishwasher and I put pretty much any kitchen item in it unless it's electrical or wooden (although wooden spoons and spatulas do go in).

If you're 50 or over, how keen are you on your dishwasher? Would you be happy to live in a home without one? Or go on holiday where you have to do the washing up?

It’s an absolute must home and holiday.
In fact 2 would be better, never need to empty and put away ever again ! Plate from the clean one, use, put in the dirty one 😂

Oxo01 · 26/02/2026 21:41

Wouldnt bother me
Never had a dishwasher
I like washing up ( probarly in minority ) but hate putting things away though.

Chatsbots · 26/02/2026 21:43

When the kitchen was done, we added an extra one (as per advice on here) so we have the two...one in the garage and one in the kitchen. It's more hygienic and uses less water than handwashing.

I also like washing up! I do it as I go along and even on Christmas Day, I can be done and dusted within half an hour

swingingbytheseat · 26/02/2026 21:47

Yes dishwasher and yes not having one is a dealbreaker

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 26/02/2026 21:49

I’m 54 and have never owned, or operated, a dishwasher. I wouldn’t have the first clue.

kohlrabislaw · 26/02/2026 21:57

Wouldn’t be bothered on holiday as we would hopefully mainly be eating out.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/02/2026 22:04

I got my first dishwasher after 50 and love it. I still wash up if I have to but if I had a choice would always book holiday accommodation with a dishwasher

I can't live without a dishwasher. I actually have 2!

This response made me laugh. Brilliant.

Seasidegrandma · 26/02/2026 22:19

I don't wash by hand, I use a launderette

I've never had a dishwasher.

Tbh they seems like such a faff when there are apparently a whole swathe of things that are not dishwasher friendly, plus you are supposed to(?) rinse food off first as well? By the time that's all been done you may as well have just washed them by hand anyway. It all seems like double the effort!

Having got this far I don't really have a burning desire for one. I got a cleaner because I hate dusting and cleaning floors WAY more than doing the washing up!

I don't rinse anything and never have and apart from my expensive chef's knives and my good crystal glasses, EVERYTHING goes in the dishwasher.

ShodAndShadySenators · 26/02/2026 22:43

I do like our dishwasher very much, it's somewhere to stack dirty dishes away tidily so they aren't either out on mucky display or needing to be washed immediately.

We don't require one on holiday as we only ever do breakfast with occasional lunches like sandwiches, so just a few plates, bowls and cups. We do these few ourselves, ie each person washes their own. We always have dinner out at a restaurant so washing up pots etc is someone else's problem.

I did that as a student. Much more convenient to just stick a load on at home and not have to worry about other people around, and bo time spent in carrying bags of laundry to the laundrette.

ramonaquimby · 27/02/2026 00:08

What does age have to do with it?

EBearhug · 27/02/2026 00:13

I suppose those of us who are older may not have grown up with dishwashers, so may not see them as so essential.

I’ve never had a dishwasher.

ultracynic · 27/02/2026 00:17

We got rid of ours, it’s quicker to just wash a few bits up as you go along. We ended up just using it for Tupperware storage, so swapped it for an actual cupboard.

SouthernNights59 · 27/02/2026 00:36

I'm in my 60s, have only ever used one at work, wouldn't have one in the house. My exDH also doesn't have one by choice.

I quite like washing dishes by hand.

Friendlygingercat · 27/02/2026 00:51

I live alone so I dont need a dishwasher. I just leave the dishes on the side until my cleaner comes and he does them.

CatherinedeBourgh · 27/02/2026 00:53

I have two. One for pans one for everything else.

I wouldn't want to wash up on holiday either.

DrPrunesqualer · 27/02/2026 01:01

Always washed by hand
Only ever used a dishwasher if there happened to be one at a holiday cottage
If I ever got a dishwasher I’d get two. One with the dirties waiting to be washed and the other to use the clean dishes from instead of putting them in a cupboard

But basically washing dishes is easy. So why waste the energy

LolaLeee · 27/02/2026 06:35

I am 50 and if our dishwasher breaks down at home I also have a breakdown. Never wash up by hands.

Weirdly I don’t mind in holiday rentals. I have rented some amazing places quite cheap as they don’t have some mod cons like dishwasher.

They are really simple to use. We have a slimline one as that's what works best for the space we have and the amount of washing up we generate. We first got one over 30 years ago when we had a newborn and a toddler as we found it next door to impossible to keep up with the washing up. No free hands!

Wiaa · 27/02/2026 07:02

I wouldn't buy a house that i couldn't fit a dishwasher in but i dont mind not having one on holiday as i don't tend to do much actual cooking plus we have a caravan so no dishwasher then

Slimtoddy · 27/02/2026 07:25

I don't put everything in my dishwasher. I don't put wood in nor do I put things in that turn cloudy e.g. glasses. So I do wash some stuff by hand. I find it kinda therapeutic to wash by hand. If I had to wash everything by hand I would not find that therapeutic
