If you are 50 or over...

(light hearted!)

do you own (and use) a dishwasher? DP and I were looking at self-catering properties and he's happy to pick one without a dishwasher. For me there's no way I'll be washing the dishes by hand. We've both over 50 and there's no way I'll do any 'manual work' unless it's absolutely necessary! Especially while on holiday. I love our dishwasher and I put pretty much any kitchen item in it unless it's electrical or wooden (although wooden spoons and spatulas do go in).

If you're 50 or over, how keen are you on your dishwasher? Would you be happy to live in a home without one? Or go on holiday where you have to do the washing up?

if you had asked me this at the end of last year id have said pffttt i managed many years without a dishwasher and its apampered luxury we can live without.
The came storm goretti and we were without power for 5 days. It was grim no electrical appliances ,wifi, lights etc. WE cooked on the barbeque though and the only think i truly missed was the dishwasher........

1000StrawberryLollies · 26/02/2026 17:57

I wouldn't want to be without a dishwasher in my own home, but I wouldn't be that fussed in a holiday house.

Foxybyname · 26/02/2026 18:03

What's the point in going away if you don't have at least the basics that you have at home?
That's always been our view and is why I struggle to find anywhere suitable in budget!

I’m 65, never had a dishwasher. Cook from scratch for five of us every day. Massive wanky foodie chef type. Clean up as I go, dishes done within ten minutes after eating.

Oooh, no, I couldn't just get up and do the dishes straight away on holiday. It's one of the joys of being on holiday, all sat round having a glass of wine, feeling relaxed and laughing and chatting. It spoils that feeling and ruins the flow of things when someone gets up and starts bustling around and whisking your plates away as soon as you've finished eating. It doesn't sound like something a foodie would do either really.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 26/02/2026 18:06

My old dishwasher died soon after DH, so I thought I didn't need a new one just for me.
I lasted a week before I got one.

MmeWorthington · 26/02/2026 18:06

I wouldn’t want to do without one at home but if the cottage, location and price were right I wouldn’t fuss for one on holiday. I wouldn’t be doing significant cooking on holiday anyway.
Simple breakfast , maybe make a packed lunch, eat out in the evening a couple of times.

Most of my holidays are camping anyway, so no dishwasher.

BorgQueen · 26/02/2026 18:09

Never had one, never wanted one.
Even DD, who is 35, has never used hers in the 4 years since they bought the house, she had one when they rented and said it was more work than doing it by hand.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/02/2026 18:09

No and No and I'm 65 and have had a dishwasher since I was 27. In fact, I wish I'd had two fitted or invested in an industrial one so that nothing stacks up durimg the wash cycle.

Growlybear83 · 26/02/2026 18:09

I’ve got a dishwasher which I use most days, bit it broke a couple of weeks ago and it’s not bothered me enough to rush to buy a new one. I definitely wouldn’t worry about going to a holiday home withiut a dishwasher.

gingercat02 · 26/02/2026 18:09

I wouldn't choose to wash up but it's wouldn't ruin my holiday because I would be doing minimal cooking or it's not a holiday.
I would always have a dishwasher by choice.
Don't get the relevance of age. I have had a dishwasher at home since my 20s, and my parents had one since the 80s.

TorroFerney · 26/02/2026 18:11

Chewbecca · 26/02/2026 17:16

I don't need one on holiday as I'm not cooking much more than cups of tea, and maybe a bit of toast or a bowl of crisps.
I like SC for the extra space & freedom but never cook a proper meal in them.

Snap, there would be very little washing up as there would be no cooking in a self catering property. We only got one when I was 40 (that makes it sound like a birthday present it wasn't) but I could do without one but my husband washes up constantly (if there are 2 plates and a mug he will fill the sink) and there are only three of us so we very rarely have a full dishwasher.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/02/2026 18:13

I'm well over 50 and I love my dishwasher! However, I don't mind washing up by hand when I have to. My mum has never seen the need for a dishwasher so I do a lot when I'm staying with her. Her invariable rule has been to wash everything as soon as it's used and immediately dry it and put it away. This is not my invariable rule! One of the things I love about my dishwasher is that I can load it during the day and it gets all the dirty stuff out of the way until the dishwasher is full and I can set it off.

peacefulpeach · 26/02/2026 17:27

My parents have a dishwasher. It’s been brand new and fitted in their kitchen for about 10years. Never used. They’re much older than 50..

My mum is the same, she moved about 6 years ago into a new build and has never used the dishwasher or the oven.

Cheese55 · 26/02/2026 18:15

JKGalbraithsTable · 26/02/2026 17:17

I don’t have a dishwasher. When we go on holidays places that do have a dishwasher or when I visit my mother or my in-laws all we seem to do is swill plates in the sink and put them in the dishwasher then take them out of the dishwasher and put them away. It just seems to be another massive chore and I don’t see where the time saving is…

You don't need to swill them, put them straight in.

NoahVale · 26/02/2026 18:19

i loved my dishwasher when i first got one many many years ago.
children left home, dishwasher died.
i can totally manage without!

Nothungrycat · 26/02/2026 18:20

I'm over 60 and consider a dishwasher an essential - when I'm at home. Perhaps less so on holiday, but it would depend on the holiday. In France last year with several friends and we didn't do much cooking, but we did eat lots of lovely pate, cheese and bread, and drink lots of wine. The dishwasher came in very handy!

NoahVale · 26/02/2026 18:21

my dm has a mini one just for her which seems extravagant

MrsAvocet · 26/02/2026 18:23

We have one at home and I prefer to have one on holiday but if a holiday home was otherwise perfect I would still book it without a dishwasher. To some degree it would depend on the precise circumstances though. If it was just DH and I going away for a long weekend I would be a lot less bothered about a dishwasher than if it was our whole family staying somewhere for Christmas week.

Vicliz24 · 26/02/2026 18:24

I’m 61 and never had one and wouldn’t really be fussed about getting one . Only two of us nobody had one when my kids were small so they’ve never been something I’ve lusted after . I’d love a dusting machine though.

SpeedwellBlue · 26/02/2026 18:25

I don't mind not having a dryer but love our dishwasher

50sFun · 26/02/2026 18:27

I love my dishwasher.

Washing up can hardly be considered to be manual labour!

EBearhug · 26/02/2026 18:32

I have neither a dishwasher nor a tumble dryer, but I think it's more pertinent that I live alone than I'm over 50.

I woukd not ho without a washing machine, though. I cannot abide hand washing. (Said machine I'd just beeping to say my wool load has finished.)

Benchdogs · 26/02/2026 18:33

In order of my love for them: washing machine & tumble dryer, rice cooker, dishwasher, hepa vacuum.

We don’t really create any washing up on holiday even in a country cottage as I’m not cooking meals away so I would book a place without a dishwasher.

I’m 55 but I don’t think that’s relevant.

AltitudeCheck · 26/02/2026 18:35

I'm 50 very soon and we don't have a dishwasher. I'd like one just to reduce clutter on the sides from dishes to wash or dry but it wouldn't even enter my head on a holiday (and we wouldn't cook, only drinks and simple breakfast/ lunches and would eat out at night)

Gwenhwyfar · 26/02/2026 18:37

Brightlittlecanary · 26/02/2026 17:17

How can you not know how to put dishes in a rack?

I do not know how to do it, according to my boyfriend.

I personally think I can do it!

I'm not quite 50, but my answer is that I absolutely want one at home, but it's not necessary in a holiday let because I wouldn't be cooking on holiday anyway, just doing simple things when not eating out.
