If you are 50 or over...

(light hearted!)

do you own (and use) a dishwasher? DP and I were looking at self-catering properties and he's happy to pick one without a dishwasher. For me there's no way I'll be washing the dishes by hand. We've both over 50 and there's no way I'll do any 'manual work' unless it's absolutely necessary! Especially while on holiday. I love our dishwasher and I put pretty much any kitchen item in it unless it's electrical or wooden (although wooden spoons and spatulas do go in).

If you're 50 or over, how keen are you on your dishwasher? Would you be happy to live in a home without one? Or go on holiday where you have to do the washing up?

I suppose size of family is relevant, there are 6 of us and 2 pets, I wouldn't be without my dishwasher. Dd stays quite frequently too, so another adult and another 2 pets.

You don't put the pets' dishes in the dishwasher with your stuff do you???

Deadringer · 27/02/2026 15:41

Yes, of course I do.

Why wouldn't you? What do you think a dishwasher does?

Yes, we have a dishwasher but DH doesn’t load it properly so I re-do it afterwards.

I only wash up by hand occasionally but DH washes up a few pots most days. Sometimes I have to tell him to leave them so I can fill the dishwasher. 😐

Why not? They don’t shit in their bowls. 😂

More hygienic than washing by hand as we use the same cutlery to mix up pet food.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 27/02/2026 17:06

Got rid of it as there was only 2 of us, bought a lovely wee chiller in its place.
Ps
My dp does the dishes in his black marigolds anyway and hovers over the top of us until we're finished 😂

I don't rinse anything and never have and apart from my expensive chef's knives and my good crystal glasses, EVERYTHING goes in the dishwasher.

Those knives can't be that good then! (joking! 😂)

But that is kinda the issue - the things you use daily you still have to wash up anyway so now you are pre sorting it AND doing dishes as well.

As I said, my expensive chef's knives and my good crystal are the only things that DON'T go in the dishwasher. My daily use glasses go in the dishwasher....so the day to day sorting and washing is one or two knives....I am not sure how that is a huge chore? or how that you understand that as "doing dishes" or maybe you misread my post?

Mumwithbaggage · 27/02/2026 17:54

I know a few people with two dishwashers in their new kitchens!

I can't imagine going anywhere on holiday I have to do chores. It's not a holiday.

I’m over 50 (59) and I’ve never owned or lived in a house with a dishwasher. I’ve never had to cook regularly for more than two people, though, and we stick to the rule that whoever cooks doesn’t wash up.

Unprecedentedusername · 27/02/2026 19:16

I have two. We are two person household as kids have left home. Without them I would never cook anything. I cannot comprehend how anyone could find washing up enjoyable.

SleafordSods · 27/02/2026 19:22

Over 50 and absolutely hate washing up. If your DH wants to rent a holiday home without a dishwasher then I assume he automatically becomes the dishwasher for the week?

RaraRachael · 27/02/2026 22:39

I don't find washing dishes particularly enjoyable but it takes 5 minutes after a meal.
Prefer having an extra cupboard than a dishwasher and it would takes us ages to have enough stuff to put a load on.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/02/2026 22:41

I’m nearly 60 and have never had a dishwasher.

NattyKnitter116 · 28/02/2026 00:39

I once knew someone who only had room for one plumbed appliance. He chose a dishwasher, even though he was single, as his logic was he could get his clothes service washed but not his dishes!
I waited 18 long years to have a dishwasher - again, didn’t have anywhere to plumb one in and had a baby so needed a washing machine.

Before those days I didn’t have either and I and everyone else I knew routinely spent at least one Sunday a month in the launderette - which was actually ok as you could read a book or chat to people and it got me out of a teeny tiny bed sitter.

There was bugger all on telly on a Sunday as I recall.

additionally , my first washing machine cost £400 from the electricity board showroom and we had to use a cunning attachment to pierce a hole in the water inlet so we could plumb it in. When you consider that was nearly 40 years ago, white goods cost far less now!

Hephzibah64 · 28/02/2026 03:15

I’m over 60 and wouldn’t want to live without my dishwasher at home. With 5 adults living here it’s used averagely twice a day. When our last one broke down we had to wash up by hand due to delivery problems(thanks Argos) which was a right pain.
We often use Airbnb for our main holiday and having a dishwasher is a bonus rather than a priority.
Two bathrooms or at the very least 2 toilets is top of my list.😀

Unprecedentedusername · 28/02/2026 22:24

Our dishwasher goes on at least once a day. What the hell do people eat that only takes 5 mins washing up. I cook from scratch and avoid upf so pots and pans get used. I guess if you eat ready meals a couple of plates and cutlery are quick to wash up.

Mere1 · 28/02/2026 22:29

I would see having a dishwasher in my home as vital. In a holiday rental, it would depend how many meals we thought we would eat in. A cereal bowl and coffee mugs I’d wash by hand Dinner pots I wouldn’t.

RaraRachael · 28/02/2026 22:55

When I'm cooking (from scratch) I wash up as I go so I don't have a big pile of stuff after we've eaten the meal.

I don't waste time rinsing dishes and am pretty quick at washing them.

ThankFuckTheSunIsHere · 28/02/2026 23:23

Weird

Aposterhasnoname · 02/03/2026 09:25

I haven't washed up so much as a spoon by hand for years, and have no intention of starting now. Bloody love our dishwasher

YetAnotherAlias62 · 02/03/2026 09:41

A dishwasher is an absolute must-have!
Although for me, it's not a holiday if I have to cook so I wouldn't be looking at self-catering properties anyway - I'd rather stay at home!

BauhausOfEliott · 02/03/2026 10:51

singthing · 26/02/2026 19:47

I've never had a dishwasher.

Tbh they seems like such a faff when there are apparently a whole swathe of things that are not dishwasher friendly, plus you are supposed to(?) rinse food off first as well? By the time that's all been done you may as well have just washed them by hand anyway. It all seems like double the effort!

Having got this far I don't really have a burning desire for one. I got a cleaner because I hate dusting and cleaning floors WAY more than doing the washing up!

You don't have to rinse the plates first. Some people do but it's not necessary. Just scrape them like you normally would and stick 'em in.

Virtually everything is dishwasher safe these days. The only thing I don't put in mine are my vintage cocktail glasses and wooden utensils that my brother hand-carved for me.
