If you are 50 or over...

(light hearted!)

do you own (and use) a dishwasher? DP and I were looking at self-catering properties and he's happy to pick one without a dishwasher. For me there's no way I'll be washing the dishes by hand. We've both over 50 and there's no way I'll do any 'manual work' unless it's absolutely necessary! Especially while on holiday. I love our dishwasher and I put pretty much any kitchen item in it unless it's electrical or wooden (although wooden spoons and spatulas do go in).

If you're 50 or over, how keen are you on your dishwasher? Would you be happy to live in a home without one? Or go on holiday where you have to do the washing up?

Have had dishwashers for almost forty years and wouldn’t be without one. Neither would I be with my Robovac today. Love that little thing running around the place while I supervise having a scroll and a cuppa. (So much so I’ve just got another one to do downstairs and the old one went upstairs).

Oooh, no, I couldn't just get up and do the dishes straight away on holiday. It's one of the joys of being on holiday, all sat round having a glass of wine, feeling relaxed and laughing and chatting. It spoils that feeling and ruins the flow of things when someone gets up and starts bustling around and whisking your plates away as soon as you've finished eating. It doesn't sound like something a foodie would do either really.

To be fair, my holiday tends towards eating out no self catering.

We prioritise owning one. Have done for the last 20 years.

Not that bothered about one in a holiday cottage. A bit of washing up on one week of the year doesn't bother us. I'll take it if I can get it but I would prioritise being closer to a pub.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/02/2026 18:58

Do none of you holiday self-catering every stay in rural places? We have done. Absolutely gorgeous surroundings but occasionally the nearest restaurant has been a half hour walk away, or a car drive away if in the UK, and sometimes you don't feel like doing the walk every night especially if it's roasting or the drive if we both want a drink. So for those types of places I'd definitely want a dishwasher so we have the option of staying in if we feel like being more casual.

onelumporthree · 26/02/2026 19:03

Never had a dishwasher. DH does the washing-up. I'm happy with that arrangement.

cramptramp · 26/02/2026 19:06

I love mine at home but don’t mind doing a bit of washing up on holiday. That said, we always eat out a lot if self catering so washing up wouldn’t happen often, plus my husband would probably was up more than me.

notmuchtoit · 26/02/2026 19:13

I have a dishwasher at home and couldn't live without one. I rarely cook on holiday so I wouldn't be bothered about one in SC accommodation.

suburburban · 26/02/2026 19:14

I always try to find a property with dishwasher and king size bed and parking

we do cook when away and it feels like a holiday

SlouchyBeanie · 26/02/2026 19:20

I'd holiday in a house without a dishwasher. My husband enjoys washing up.
I wouldn't live in a house without a dishwasher. Sometimes he's not here.

Mcdhotchoc · 26/02/2026 19:20

Our happy marriage is thanks to the dishwasher
And enough crockery/cookware etc to facilitate it.
If I had my time again when I had a houseful of kids, I'd have 2. One for dirty, one for clean and fewer cupboards

canuckup · 26/02/2026 19:21

I'm not over 50 but I absolutely refuse to 'holiday' without a dishwasher and tumble dryer

All the bloody cooking shenanigans is enough

Of course. But in that scenario I’m not going to cook something that makes so much washing up that I’d need a dishwasher.

My parents used to share the washing up every night when I was a child and I used to love hearing them flirting and laughing together. They both died in my late teens so I find a bit of companionable washing up with DH a lovely thing to do once in a while.

Inextremis · 26/02/2026 19:23

I'm 66, and I got my first-ever dishwasher 3 years ago. It's great, but if I had to, I'd go back to doing it by hand - and certainly wouldn't mind a holiday without one.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/02/2026 19:27

I’m over 50, never had one. I can see the appeal for a big family but not just for DP and me. I don’t mind washing up with the radio on, DP dries - it’s time together to catch up and chat

Hellohelga · 26/02/2026 19:34

Dishwasher essential unless DH happy to wash up after breakfast and pay for lunch and dinne4 out.

BeaLola · 26/02/2026 19:35

If I was on holiday it wouldn’t bother me but that’s probably because we would be eating out and the only washing up would be coffee cups and the odd glass

i stayed with my DF last year - his “rule” is washing up after every breakfast and meal - do for breakfast 2 cups and 1 bowl ( I wasn’t Babi g breakfast) but you can’t leave the plates by sink you must wash up - it for draining (no pun intended)

to be honest if our dishwasher broke my DH would be replacing it before I had noticed

Deadringer · 26/02/2026 19:36

I didn't get a dishwasher until about 10 years ago, I love it and wouldn't be without one now.

Tel12 · 26/02/2026 19:37

When I first heard there were such magical things as dishwashers I asked how the plates didn't break. 🤔. I could only imagine a similar device to a washing machine. No, I'm not going anywhere without one!

GenerousGardener · 26/02/2026 19:37

It’s the 21st century. No one should be washing up by hand.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/02/2026 19:43

I once took my DM (late 70s at the time) to look at a McCarthy & Stone retirement flat she thought she might like.

There was no dishwasher! She asked the staff member (she was 25 max) who was showing us around, why not?

‘They didn’t think the old people would want them.’

Exit my DM in disgust!
Some years previously she’d already downsized to a smaller house, and about the first thing she did was have a dishwasher installed!
She never did move to a retirement flat.

MaidOfSteel · 26/02/2026 19:44

I’ve never had, and probably never will have a dishwasher. How much washing up do you all create!? There’s only me & my husband and it takes less than 5 minutes to do.

TheRedBear · 26/02/2026 19:46

smallchange · 26/02/2026 17:21

I've never owned a dishwasher but I would love to have one. We'll need to get a new kitchen sometime in the next few years and I'm determined to find space.

So, it's a must-have for me when I go on holiday - we live in a "modest" sort of property and I expect my holiday houses to be better than where we live so book accordingly.

I feel you're living my life 😂

Although I'm getting close to not wanting to do self-catering because it's not an effing holiday for me!

singthing · 26/02/2026 19:47

I've never had a dishwasher.

Tbh they seems like such a faff when there are apparently a whole swathe of things that are not dishwasher friendly, plus you are supposed to(?) rinse food off first as well? By the time that's all been done you may as well have just washed them by hand anyway. It all seems like double the effort!

Having got this far I don't really have a burning desire for one. I got a cleaner because I hate dusting and cleaning floors WAY more than doing the washing up!

WearyAuldWumman · 26/02/2026 19:47

I've never had a dishwasher. I'm nearly 66.
