Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

Wow. That’s awful.

Pleasealexa · 25/02/2026 08:06

Shouldn't they just reinforce the school skirt level? I don't want to see anyone's under garments, male or female.

Work9to5 · 25/02/2026 08:07

The because reason is ridiculous. There's a dress policy and it should be stuck to.

Tigger18 · 25/02/2026 08:08

I agree the school should enforce the no short skirts rule but banning socks is mental. Says a lot about the male deputy this rule tbh.

They have reinforced the skirt level but apparently girls arrive at school in the correct skirt and then roll it up during the day.

It is awful that girls are being exposed to being limited because of how it makes men feel.

But at the same time, when I was at school if a male teacher entirely reasonably had told a girl her skirt was too short/underwear was showing the reaction would have been 'oh my god Mr Smith was looking up my skirt!' and utter chaos would have ensued. Tbh this would probably also have happened if Mr Smith had just been looking in her general direction and not said anything.

I suspect this has happened and is what the school are trying to avoid.

Theunamedcat · 25/02/2026 08:12

Girls rolling skirts up has always been an issue persistent offenders should be forced to wear trousers

2dogsandabudgie · 25/02/2026 08:13

I think the school need to ask the girls why they feel the need to roll their skirts up really short.

I live near a school and some of the skirts are so short that they do look indecent.

parietal · 25/02/2026 08:14

Trousers for everyone. Skirts aren’t necessary

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 25/02/2026 08:14

Blanket bans are there to stop the few who push boundaries. I watch the girls locally on their way into school, huge secondary, and honestly, the skirt is verging on belt territory, as that's the tribal code currently, and no, I am not being flippant. They all wear tights! I worked in education and schools where uniform rules are maintained often have more freedom and respect elsewhere behaviour wise. I hate that girls can't wear what they want, but sadly our world is going through a nasty stage at the moment, where rules seem to be laughed at by so many, so blanket bans are a necessary evil.

So the teachers sanction them...

And offer trousers as uniform.... And then any persistent skirt rollers will be sanctioned and given trousers to change into.

It’s 17 degrees here today. DD feels overly warm at the best of times in her uniform and was pretty miserable pulling on her tights today!

How much time are teachers supposed to waste each day policing the uniform policy because some girls don't comply?
Everyone knows the uniform policy before they attend, there's usually a "contract" that parents and students sign when they start.
Let's start pulling up the parents of girls who break the rules, so the ones who behave are not penalised.

Well if they are rolling their skirts up during the day they should have some sort of punishment or sanction.

I can't understand how young girls and young women now seem to think it's normal to display their underwear in public.

I have a lot if sympathy with people who are uncomfortable with seeing young girls showing their underwear in this way although it's everybody's fault but the ridiculous behaviour of the girls in some people's eyes.

If the girls in question have no idea of acceptable and appropriate dress and their parents aren't educating them in this then the school arent left with many choices.

But why a blanket ban because of a few? Surely just punish the few? I also see girls locally wearing what is basically a belt so I do appreciate the issue.

Unfortunately having seen some of the local schools around here the girls are wearing their skirts so ridiculously short that I can see why you end up with rules about wearing tights

TheignT · 25/02/2026 08:20

Do other girls and women want to see their underwear. I wore minis in the 60s and generally smile at crazy fashions as I think we all did similar but other people's used knickers don't need to be on display and I for one don't want to see them.

The deputy head's comments were unfortunate but I think that is getting away from the point, only perverts want to be looking at other people's knickers when in use. The deputy head was probably thinking of his own discomfort and overlooking how other women and girls feel.

happytobeherewhenever · 25/02/2026 08:20

Can you/your DD suggest to the school that shorts are to be worn underneath skirts? Still shit but would eliminate the tights problem

This, absolutely.

I don't want to see anyone's underwear and males can dress just as inappropriately as females and make anyone uncomfortable

Edited

And this is how boys grow into entitled men. They internalise that girls are responsible for how they feel which is a few short steps in logic from “well she wouldn’t have been assaulted if she hadn’t worn that dress…”

I don’t want to see anyone’s undergarments. No one should be making sexual comments at school girls, and I’m not victim blaming, but there has to be some standards in dress codes in schools.

Dollymylove · 25/02/2026 08:22

So heres the scenario. Girls want to wear skirts halfway up their arse. Literally.
Any male person who gives the tiniest glance, possibly in disbelief, wondering if these girls have actually forgotten to put on a skirt, will be labelled as a pervert.
Is it remotely possible that the parents and school authorities could grow a pair of bollocks and tell the girls to actually dress properly and not as if they are off to some seedy nightclub?

Exactly. It’s not because of men, it’s because of the older girls not adhering to school uniform.

We lived very close to a high school and even as a middle aged woman I cringed at the daily parade of girls knickers showing. It’s not because I could see their bum - my cringe was I felt that many teen girls felt compelled to wear short skirts to fit in with the other girls … but they weren’t aware that their knickers were on show when they walked and others were potentially sniggering at them.

I think many girls would look at their skirts from the front and not realise that due to the curve of their bum, their skirt was shorter at the back and when they walked their skirt would kick up and show their knickers. These girls were wearing light weight tights so you have that effect of a crooked seam over their undies - and we all know what undies squashed by tights look like.

Some girls would have massive holes in their tights over their knickers and I was so tempted to let them know for their own sake. But I realised a middle aged women stopping them on the way to school and saying hey do you realise your knickers are on display when you walk with a massive hole in your tights over them … would have been worse for their confidence so I just hoped a friend told them.

I don’t know why schools just include an option in the uniform to wear shorts under skirts or skorts rather than tights.

People always talk about how schools say to girls not to wear short skirts for boys sake … no one ever addresses how some girls feel they have to wear short skirts to fit in with the other girls.

Absolutely! If this was a work environment, they’d be told to bloody dress properly.

And i say that as someone who dressed in tiny micro skirts and boobs tubes when I was younger (in bars and clubs!).
