Home Office says there are 300K Brits in the ME

One of them told the FT

“Moved to Dubai for tax shelter and now I’m in a bomb shelter,”

I wonder what Richard "man o' the people" Tice will do ? If he's first back from Dubai then it sends the wrong message about wealth and privilege.

Also, will returning ex-pats be required to pay tax back in the UK ?

In my youth, there are plenty of bands who would have worked that into a song

“Moved here to dodge tax and now I’m dodging bombs,”

Lalgarh · 02/03/2026 09:34

I was wondering where Tice and Oakeshott had got to.

Radio this morning had reactions from lib Dems and greens (as expected, don't get involved etc, which is going to be increasingly difficult if there's more attacks on say RAF Akrotiri), but nothing from the Tories or reform so far

I am hoping they are in an agony of indecision. They are so used to parading around in the public eye, but are now well aware it's a bear trap out there.

How sad.

Labour isn't listening to the message the G&D by-election sent it. This is not only cruel, but an expensive administrative nightmare.

A casual dig suggests that the timing of this development is the the worst possible for ex-pats who are forced to return to the UK in terms of tax liabilities.

So much so that as a coincidence it's up there with the wrong turning Franz Ferdinands driver took 😀

It seems odd they are so intent on moving towards the Tory style of death.

@SerendipityJane HMRC welcome cards at the ready 😂

@SerendipityJane HMRC welcome cards at the ready 😂

It's a tad more nuanced that that. But essentially if you remain back in the UK for more than 60 days, it's tax time. And if it breaks a multi year (the year in question being a UK tax year that starts 5th April) then you could be liable for 2 years.

Of course you can pay an accountant to tango with HMRC, but they ain't cheap.

I hope their will be a massive backlash from the back benches.

Kemi Badenoch has accused Keir Starmer of not supporting the initial strikes in Iran for fear of upsetting Muslim voters “whose political loyalties are swayed by conflicts in the Middle East, not the British national interest.”

That’s quite the claim, and pretty inflammatory.

The irony being it was the Tories who insisted British interests in the Middle East were paramount over domestic issues in the 1920s.

Funny old world.

She is such a bigoted 🤡. Does she really believe the government is deciding policy based on the wishes of 6% of the population?

Of course she doesn't.

But she wants here "base" to believe that. Because they are thick racists.

I don't think you are allowed to call them thick on MN.....

Well, Badenoch and Farage would follow Trump over a cliff - so her comments are to be expected.

Politico article I read highlighted that the German/French/UK support has been defined more tightly in comparison with what the US was asking for last week - hence the change in position.

We know that Starmer doesnt really want to get the UK involved. Despite Badenoch's remarks and Trump's gurning there is little support in the UK for direct involvement (nor is there support for the war in the US).

But, as I see it, our bases in Cyprus always seemed likely to be a Hezbollah target. And I imagine the US weren't unhappy about that - a good way of drawing us in.

Tony Blair was re elected in 2001 and 2005.

Not sure the Blair-Bush relationship is something we will see again. Or want to.

Yes.

But the narrative that a deeply unpopular (and illegal) war from day one is a somehow an electoral liability doesn't fly (we recall Nixon won in 1972).

It's becoming clearer as memories fade to history that part of the UKs entrenched problems with extremism and political cynicism crystallised when it became clear that no matter what the country wanted, the government would do what it wanted.

Notonthestairs · 02/03/2026 11:55

I think we were always going to be dragged in to this war.

I think Trump will lose interest after the bombing ends and the fight for peace begins.

I think there will chaos in Iran as the different groups slug it out and whilst that continues the little infrastructure there is will degrade further (power/water/medical facilities).

And we know that humanitarian disasters lead to refugee crises.

All at a time when foreign aid has been slashed and will be slashed further.

And lo, the likes of Farage and Badenoch will seek to make political hay from increased numbers of Iranians looking to flee.

Some tit will suggest that because I am concerned about all of these things that somehow that equates to support for a frankly terrifying, murderous regime. It doesn't.

SerendipityJane · 02/03/2026 12:00

I think we were always going to be dragged in to this war

Britains interests around the world make it very exposed to a lot of instability.

Looks like Trump is vying with Putin to see whose 3 day way can last longest.

Yeah I’m disappointed in them. Even as a centrist voter I feel they are moving too far right and away from a party I could vote for.

The are increasing my belief in the left if nothing else!
