Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

It was Bulls*t... So many people forgot about this, I couldn't trust a word they said about it after this! 🤡

MyBadday · 19/02/2026 09:02

That very much sounds like a scene from the film world war z

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:04

Not a film . It was 100% on the news. My entire family watched it and I wrote about it in my diary!

I don't think you were watching the news. It sounds like you were watching a film and your brains have merged the two events.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 19/02/2026 09:07

COVID news didn't really pick up properly until the new year. The BBC didn't report until January.

JetFlight · 19/02/2026 09:07

I remember this too but can’t recall if it was actual news or social media clip.

kirinm · 19/02/2026 09:08

I remember watching ICU patients in Italy and that looking terrifying enough.

EileenBilton · 19/02/2026 09:09

I remember a video of someone collapsing and fitting in the street. It was obvious to me that this was just a person having a seizure and nothing to do with covid. I don't remember body bags, vans, etc. And it was only one video of one person.

CmonBobby · 19/02/2026 09:09

Sounds like the film Contagion.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:10

It was DEFINITELY on the TV. We were at my late PIL house for dinner. They watched the BBC news on TV
The bbc were definitely reporting before Jan. The reports were mainly how it wouldn't get here. The BBC were reporting as a friends child went on a trip to China with school and school sent a letter to say it was safe despite news reports as they were going to a different bit of china

I remember it too, but as I don’t watch TV I think it must have just been on social media, especially X.

OriginalSkang · 19/02/2026 09:11

No, I don't remember this at all

Merseymum1980 · 19/02/2026 09:12

I domt remember that but .i remember all the nonsense about bats . Which turned out to be a load of rubbish and people forgot.

Sorry, should have said I only saw it on social media, it could also have been on TV news as well. It looked ridiculous though, like a scene from a rubbish movie.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:13

Oh yeah the bats ,forgot that bit!
I remember the Italy ICU footage but that was much later and very scary

The very first mention of COVID on BBC News was on 12/01/20 and it was presented by a guy called Rick Preston and it was a fairly anodyne report. I’ve just watched it.
It is easily googled.

First news report on BBC was 12 Jan 2020

This is why I am confused as I know it was mentioned before Christmas due to the China trip. We haven't all hallucinated it. I also wrote about it but now it's vanished

I really do think you're misremembering. Even in China they didn't know what was happening before Christmas and only a handful of people were in hospital. It really wasn't a new story on the BBC before Christmas 2019, it didn't start getting coverage until January 2020.

Yes I remember it all being pretty bland until the Italy footage.

Many people watch stuff on social media, then blame TV news.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:17

OK mystery still not solved I guess

You've just got your dates and sources muddled.

Look up the UK timeline, from first reported case to first lockdown.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:18

I really haven't as I wrote it down. I will keep investigating!

Memories are fickle things. It’s really easy to get events merged.

You know when people use the clown emoji nobody takes them seriously?

OP are you sure it's not a bit like walkers swapping cheese ans onion and salt and vinegar? We all remember that but it never happened. It's weird.
