Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

Im sure I can remember seeing something similar on the news. However, I don't think it could have been before the Christmas. The first mention of covid on the BBC I can find is 6th Jan 2020 which just mentions a "mystery virus". I would imagine reports from hospitals etc would have been later in January as it took a hold.

Earlier in Dec I write about the China trip letter then about 10 days later I write about going round for tea (birthday) and us all being scared about the footage and sil saying "what the he'll is this thing"
I write my diary each night so it would have been fresh in my mind

Did you specifically write that it was broadcast on the BBC?

It would be interesting to see the words you used.

Brewtiful · 19/02/2026 09:30

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:28

No because I literally still have the diary!
I'm not being grumpy btw. I do find it genuinely fascinating
Also, the school wrote a letter about the China trip being fine as the outbreak was in a different part , this was in Dec. They had to do this as parents had asked so it was definitely on the radar in Dec somehow

Then you obviously were not watching the clips you've mentioned on BBC news?

It was a very disturbing video. It had a lot of people rattled.

socks1107 · 19/02/2026 09:31

I remember seeing it

this is interesting though. A lot of people referring to the videos who now can’t find them.

Interesting

I really do think you're misremembering. Even in China they didn't know what was happening

I remember plenty of posters on MNs saying they know about it in November and were already preparing 🙄

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:26

Maybe they showed a montage of social media clips or something.

Why would you have been scared by a montage of social media clips though? If it was social media you would naturally be sceptical.

Edited

It wasn't from a hospital it was in the street

Yes my pil had a very specific viewing schedule of the news.

It was on the news so we must have thought it was news

You know when people use the clown emoji nobody takes them seriously?

OP are you sure it's not a bit like walkers swapping cheese ans onion and salt and vinegar? We all remember that but it never happened. It's weird.

That's because it was Golden Wonder not Walkers. They had the colours the opposite way around to Walkers certainly in the 70's and possibly after that too. I was taken aback with how wrong it was as a child moving from London where we always had GW crisps to The Midlands where Walkers were dominant. It was all just very, very wrong!

COVID news didn't really pick up properly until the new year. The BBC didn't report until January.

I certainly remember January news reports about a major outbreak of a yet-to-be-identified serious respiratory illness in Northern Italy (in hindsight evidently imported by Chinese leather-factory workers from Wuhan) - and a bit later being startled to hear that many people (including a nephew of mine) were still going skiing in northern Italy during the February half term. Despite all the news footage!

I asked dd whether the Gdcs’ school asked anyone after the half term break whether they’d been skiing in Italy, but apparently nobody had thought it necessary.
And as they say, the rest is history….

I don't think you were watching the news. It sounds like you were watching a film and your brains have merged the two events.

How condescending. I remember watching it too.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:33

Yes my pil had a very specific viewing schedule of the news.

A random social media montage would not be on the news, except in an item about the bullshit you get on social media. In which case why would it have scared you?

This just feels like another flavour of conspiracy theory tbh.

I remember it being in the news at Christmas because I remember where I was Christmas Day. But I don’t recall the footage you describe. It sounds more like an Outbreak style movie.

It's not condescending. This situation quite a common occurrence especially with bug news events.

The OP cannot have watched this on the BBC news at the time she says she did.

CmonBobby · 19/02/2026 09:37

You can rewatch most news broadcasts, and you seem to know the date and time. Have you tried searching for it to rewatch?

Needtoughlove · 19/02/2026 09:37

I have just seen the footage. Not on BBC but many other news outlets around the world did release footage. You can google it and there are tons of videos of people collapsing int he street from end Dec/early Jan.

Applecup · 19/02/2026 09:37

I remember reading a newspaper article written by somebody in China. How they were short of food and not allowed out at all. How people were being taken away if they were found to be ill. It did all sound surreal.

PandoraSocks · 19/02/2026 09:37

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:35

The BBC itself says its first reports were in January. So it is impossible that you saw something about Covid on the BBC news in December.
