Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

A random social media montage would not be on the news, except in an item about the bullshit you get on social media. In which case why would it have scared you?

This just feels like another flavour of conspiracy theory tbh.

Nope , definitely not a conspiracy theory. Just a weird thing I'm trying to work out. Not just me misremembering as a school sent a letter pre Dec

I have just seen the footage. Not on BBC but many other news outlets around the world did release footage. You can google it and there are tons of videos of people collapsing int he street from end Dec/early Jan.

Could you link please? When were the videos released?

Maybe your headteacher should apply to run public health

So you misunderstood the news item.

No need for the condescension. I'm chatting openly. We all were watching and listening. Not just me

I think I do remember it being broadcast not sure exactly where or what Channel Because I remember thinking they knew about it and wasn't taking it seriously as they should have been and we had a little news in January then all went mental in march !! And I think it was November when people in Asia or flights from Asia had been tested for some new virus 🦠
It's a strange one isn't it !
But I do remember as clear as day thinking why are they now Taking it so seriously in march when they knew before Xmas !

The letter was sent in November?

Tcateh · 19/02/2026 09:40

I remember footage of Chinese people being locked in their homes.
Someone on here was living in China and has commented above that they remember what you're talking about.
Someone else on this thread has commented that others on YouTube are asking a similar thing.

I believe your timeline op, based on your details of trip etc.

What I deffo remember is a really weird thread in the early Jan of 2020 about a mumsnetter whose son kept talking about a pin badge called birdything!

HidethebiscuitsitsNellie · 19/02/2026 09:41

What was the date that you went to your PILs and watched this on the news? Someone might be able to find the programme.

No need for the sarcasm. This was a real thing that a friends child experienced

It isn't condescension, you have just said It was on the news so we must have thought it was news which is not the same as 'we saw a report that specifically presented this video as fact'

It's much more likely your memory is a bit warped than there's been a global conspiracy to delete one video you remember.

CommonlyKnownAs · 19/02/2026 09:42

Don't recall seeing anything around Christmas 2019.

I do remember a lot of discussion about the China situation in January. The Chinese New Year started in the final week, obviously there's lots of parades and stuff here, and some people were talking about whether to go or not.

No sorry. Meant pre christmas . I will edit!

Yes it was definitely being discussed before Christmas as there was a family at my daughters school that were going skiing and a number of parents saying they wouldn’t risk flying and being with so many other people in an aeroplane with the reports of the virus.

I definitely don't think it's a global conspiracy!!!
I don't think there's any conspiracy!
I'm just interested in if anyone else saw it

I remember something similar. People calling for help at their windows as they'd been locked in for quarantine. One women was very distressed, shouting 'He's dead!'

I teach at a school with many international students, some from Wuhan. Before the pandemic started in Britain, after the Christmas holidays of 2019, we had so many staff off sick with 'flu' that we had to start blending classes.
I've worked there 20+ years and that's never happened before or since.

I remember similar footage but it was in India

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/02/2026 09:44

I flew to Australia mid Feb 2020 (just got back before everything hit) and it certainly wasn't being considered as anything serious at all then or I most definitely WOULD NOT have gone. There weren't any contagion controls in any of the airports I passed through or any sense of panic at all.

Flew back early March and DD2 who took me to Melbourne Airport reported seeing loads of people buying toilet rolls as she drove home.

Tulipvase · 19/02/2026 09:44

Google suggests patient 0 is thought to have been identified on 01/12/19. But now some speculation that there were cases as early as 17/11/19. But it was reported to WHO on 31/12/19.

seems unlikely that the school would have know about this prior to December.

I remember this as well as my son was at uni and we discussed whether he would come home at Christmas and stay home.

I've found this, I know it's a Reddit link, but they mention late 2019. Further down on that page is a link to some archive videos, I've clicked on a couple of MP4 and they do show the type of video I remember. They didn't set off my virus software so 🤷🏻‍♀️

There were lots of discussions on MN about whether to go skiing. In the February half term. I think you are getting timescales mixed up. First ever reports of the virus we're early January.

The school were responding to parents asking if it was still going ahead.
