How many glasses of water do you have a day?

If a glass is a pint?

I’ve drank almost three pints today and will probably have another three before bed. I don’t have to force myself or anything, I’m thirsty if I drink any less than this a day.

DH thinks it’s excessive and my family are always teasing me about drinking a lot of water. I don’t understand how they’re not more thirsty.

How much do you drink?

Did you only ever drink from the garden hose 🙄🙄🙄

I’ve drunk from the tap at allotment if that interests you

Yes they fought wars and marched the length of the country on beer and wine

all this water drinking is ridiculous

They also used leeches and chucked women with PND in mental asylums…medical and health advice moves on, and life expectancy is far higher now if I recall…

That’s not comparable and ridiculous - we are talking about the body and its need to flood it with water

I think it’s a bit of a leap from “people don’t need to lug massive Stanley bottles around everywhere” to “let’s take our health advice from the time people marched round the country fighting battles”.

You were the one discussing people from generations ago, who were dying much younger!

That isn’t what I’m saying

no medical person suddenly said less than a decade ago to drink loads of water - it’s a marketing thing - wake up!!!!

we lasted until about 2010 perfectly well - your body is like a machine - thirst tells you when you need to drink

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 15/02/2026 22:06

None…never really have done! I probably have three or four cups of tea/coffee and an occasional glass of wine. In very hot weather I might take a water bottle with me to work…but I rarely get through a whole bottle.

Very normal

EmeraldShamrock000 · 15/02/2026 22:08

1 before bed when I realise that I’m thirsty. 🫣 probably 8 cups of tea with sugar.

Thing is with the food industry as it is now and UPFs can we really trust people to read thirst cues correctly with the environmental factors we now have? How many reach for food instead. FYI plenty of medical people recommend drinking more, it’s bloody everywhere! Have cold? Drink. It’s warm, drink. Overeating, drink. Exercising, drink. Headaches, drink. Dark circles, drink. I’m not saying everyone needs to constantly walk around with a flask, I’m not stupid capitalism obviously jumps on a fad, but being properly hydrated fixes and awful lot.

Do bear in mind we had water fountains. At school, on the streets, in work places

No one either supplies that now or thinks they should drink out of fountains. You'll get posters saying its 'grim' or 'vile'.

People like you on these threads who whinge on about how much others drink are always saying “I only ever drank from the garden hose” it’s like their mantra. It makes absolutely bob all difference to you how much others drink.

No they did not. They were drinking water. Tap water at home, and water transported in old oil tanks abroad. Alcohol was rationed.

The idea that drinking water is a new thing is a myth. People have always drank water.

No one is arguing otherwise. The question is how much water (or other liquids) do you drink in a day. Which you usually do because you’re thirsty.

Honestly of all the marketing and advertising campaigns there are, water is pretty benign. I know the plastic bottles create waste but plenty of us refill, have a water bottle or drink good old tap water.

Personally I think not drinking enough does cause genuine issues for people, especially elderly people - my MIL gets confused and wobbly, my DH gives her a glass of water and she revives right in front of our eyes. It’s amazing.

Also some people (like me) just enjoy drinking it - it’s pretty natural surely?

Tryagain26 · 15/02/2026 22:19

Sometimes I don't drink any water mostly I drink coffee and fruit/herbal tea.. occasionally I have a glass of water but only when I remember that I probably should

reluctantbrit · 15/02/2026 22:22

Depends. When I work it's easily 3l, mix of sparkling water, very diluted apple juice with sparkling water and at least 3 mugs of ginger lemon tea plus 3-4 mug of black tea (normal and decaf).

On weekends, it's less water and more black tea. I try to get at least 2l in.

I think its overated. I have at various points really focused on water and increasing it and plain water not mixed with other things like tea or coffee

I have found my various problems unaffected by the water increase

Headaches in particular. I suffer with migraines and have lost count of people who 'helpfully' say 'oh you should drink more water'

Makes no difference whatsoever.

Yes but 4 cups of tea or coffee is probably coming up to 1.5l anyway, depending on the size of the mugs - mine are about 350ml, but DH has a couple of massive ones. So you’re calling that a normal amount while sneering at other people who say they like to drink not that much more.

Multiple scientific studies have shown that water helps migraines. Not for everyone obviously, and not completely. And it’s still annoying to have people suggest solutions you’re definitely already well aware of. But water does not make no difference whatsoever to migraines.

impostacosta · 15/02/2026 22:26

2l water throughout the day, one coffee in the morning and one can of Diet Coke in the evening. That’s during the week while I’m at work, I def feel
dehydrated at weekend when I’m out of routine

Drinking the amounts people drink now is a fad.

People drink when they’re thirsty. How can drinking tap water be a fad?

I have 5.5 pints every day. I’m breastfeeding though.
