Which old TV shows would you like to watch but they just have too many episodes?

I am not one for rewatching shows but I recently did start Stranger Things from the beginning again in preparation for Season 5 (and because I couldn’t remember a damn thing from my first watch!), and to be honest, I really enjoyed refreshing my memory. I started to think of some other TV shows that I missed the first time round but the amount of episodes are putting me off starting any! My list so far is:

The Sopranos
Mad Men
Boardwalk Empire
Game of Thrones
Sex and the City
Game of Thrones (maybe… 🤔)
Lost (I watched all but the last series of this so would need to start again to refresh my memory!)

You don't have to watch ALL the episodes to the end if you don't like it.

Just watch the first two series and if you aren't hooked and wanting to watch the rest by then just bin the rest.

Oh yes - ‘Lost’ definitely suffers from the fact the writers not knowing how to finish it (why actually finish it at all?)

Spoiler alert - at the end of Series 4, the writers apparently said ‘The island is NOT purgatory’, and at the end of Series 6, er…..

it gave all the impression of a rush job to wrap things up.

It was hard to get an ending as good as the build up to it.

And yes for a long time everyone was speculating it was purgatory and the rumor was (dunno from where) that it actually wasn't. And then it turned out it was.

Basically the writers just couldn't live up to the suspense and mystery that they delivered in the first 2-3 seasons.

I recently rewatched Downton Abbey, it was an absolute joy. I also started Glee and intend to watch Desperate Housewives too.

I only saw In the line of duty recently, very late to the party. Dh never saw it so we plan on watching it from the start in a few months..I'm looking forward to that.

Dh rewatched Mad men and How I met your mother recently, we both loved them first time around.

I know what you mean OP about too many episodes. It feels like a commitment!

@TakingTheHorseToFrance love the username, presume you are referring to the ad? Dh and I literally have that silly conversation every time we use real butter.

Most series IME its the first 2-3 seasons where all the meat is.

The big exceptions to the for me are NCIS (I did like the first 2 seasons the best, but the next few up until Gibbs left were still pretty good, once Gibbs left that was it for me, he was a hard act to follow).

Star Trek TNG is another exception. After the first 3 seasons or the actors really grew into their roles and got a lot better - the first 3 seasons are pretty amateurish.

GOT kept it up for all the seasons except the last one, which was a bit crap compared with the rest.

X-files, Lost, Westworld. Not much to write home about after the first couple of seasons.

I LOVED Desperate Housewives! I used to get snuggled up in bed with snacks on the nights it aired ☺️

I love Desperate Housewives too, watched them all from when they first aired. I've been rewatching lately but I stop after series 6 as I like to pretend series 7 and 8 didn't happen. Utter shite. Especially 8

We rewatched Lost and Walking Dead during Covid. DH wants to rewatch Walking Dead again as we haven’t seen the end (they stopped filming during Covid) but I’m not sure I can watch it all again!
I recently rewatched Desperate Housewives and am currently watching Greys Anatomy for the first time (on season 12 and it’s starting to go downhill)

I’d recommend Private Practice if you haven’t seen that and are finding Grey’s is going a bit downhill (which I’d agree with). It follows Addison after she leaves, and introduces Derek’s sister Amy (not sure if you’ll have met her yet in Grey’s Anatomy). 6 seasons so not too long.

LBB2020 · 17/02/2026 07:27

@CloakedInGucci thank you, I will have a look for Private Practice as I loved Addison!

Spooks
but is it too dated?

Rewatched Spooks in lockdown with DH who hadn't seen it. It's not too dated at all and we both really enjoyed it.

Plump82 · 17/02/2026 14:36

I really want to watch The Handmaid's Tale but I can't watch too many episodes of something before I start losing concentration so it seems like a big commitment to get through all 6 series!

Cairneyes · 17/02/2026 16:54

This is SUCH a useful thread, lots of suggestions for after Ive finished Silent Witness ( up to season six now!)

RedRiverShore6 · 17/02/2026 17:23

I'm now thinking I should watch Silent Witness ws well which I have never watched before

Arg, that was the one I meant in my PP. I said Prime Suspect. I meant Silent Witness. Yes, 29 series to catch up on. That is quite a commitment!

It is a really good series, but my god it will make you so angry too.

We’ve just started The Sopranos. First time for me.

I’m also on my regular rewatch of The West Wing. I rewatch it every year or so. Currently on S3. Again.

House, Grey’s, Call The Midwife and Unforgotten are all things I’d watch again.

I am really jealous that you're watching it for tne first time! What a series.

nOlives · 18/02/2026 09:17

Started The Sopranos for the first time recently and it is INTERMINABLE! Got as far as season 3 and happy never to have to watch any more. I don't like leaving a story unfinished but there is no story and it goes on forever. Each episode lasts about 3 hours and I find myself asking are we near the end yet.
I don't usually like to read or watch anything more than once but potentialy might revisit Peaky Blinders or Slow Horses in a decade or so.

BestIsWest · 18/02/2026 09:19

I’m not wild about it (Sopranos) so far to be honest but we’re only four episodes in so I will persevere.

dailyconniptions · 18/02/2026 09:31

Gilmore Girls

lilkitten · 18/02/2026 14:29

Number of episodes wouldn't bother me, I can't binge watch so I watch one episode of something a day. Rewatched all of Mad Men last year, now rewatching Schitt's Creek since Catherine O'Hara's death

Mags1001 · 27/02/2026 11:43

Sopranos
The Simpson
Game of thrones

janj52301 · 16/03/2026 16:35

I recently binged West Wing, third time and there will be a fourth in a couple of years, the actors and scripts fabulous even if I don't understand all the political points

janj52301 · 16/03/2026 16:36

Try the Mentalist rather silly but enjoyable

The quality of writing in THT falls off a cliff after the first two series, but you'll get caught up in Sunk Cost Fallacy and watch the rest of it because you feel obliged to. Really though, it just gets more and more ridiculous as it drags on, and on, and on, and on....

needanewusernamefor2026 · 16/03/2026 16:55

Northern exposure. It is currently on prime which i don't have. Contemplating a free 1 month trial but it is 124 episodes..... also Episodes which was on bbc2 might be good for a re-watch.
