Which old TV shows would you like to watch but they just have too many episodes?

I am not one for rewatching shows but I recently did start Stranger Things from the beginning again in preparation for Season 5 (and because I couldn’t remember a damn thing from my first watch!), and to be honest, I really enjoyed refreshing my memory. I started to think of some other TV shows that I missed the first time round but the amount of episodes are putting me off starting any! My list so far is:

The Sopranos
Mad Men
Boardwalk Empire
Game of Thrones
Sex and the City
Game of Thrones (maybe… 🤔)
Lost (I watched all but the last series of this so would need to start again to refresh my memory!)

I’ve rewatched silent witness,(there are a couple of episodes the bbc say they don’t have but they are on daily motion and I suspect it’s due to the subject matter… !), criminal minds, greys anatomy, line of duty, unforgotten, waking the dead and spooks and for a bit of easy watching, Waterloo Road.

I spend a lot of time in and out of hospital so they’re idea to have on in the background to dull any thing else that might be going on (with head phones obvs) I’ve never seen person of interest- is it worth a watch?

Theresalittlebitofwitchinyou · 15/02/2026 12:28

Recently finished Desperate Housewives, Dexter and about to finish The Sopranos again, Dd1 is recovering from a serious illness and we have been watching lots of my old favourites together. We are in series 2 of ER now and thinking of X files

I don't understand why the number of episodes would put you off. Surely if it's good enough to want to re-watch, it's good to have more episodes to look forward to. I say that as someone who's just started watching Game of Thrones for the 4th time Grin

But I’m not re-watching, I’d be watching from the start for the first time. I would only get time for 1-2 episodes a few times a week when the kids are in bed so it’s a big commitment if it ends up being crap.

It is very difficult to watch long series when you have DC as often stuff isn't suitable so you can only watch when they are in bed, I think that is probably why I didn't watch ER when it first came out as DS was quite young at nursery and we were busy when we got home from being at work, we were more likely to watch a film. Now I'm retired I have lots of time especially in the winter.

DizziLizzy · 15/02/2026 14:23

Ray Donovan
Luther
Mad dogs

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/02/2026 15:17

Mad Men is brilliant I’m rewatching now

<waves> to @CaveMum I love the West Wing too

my too long to watch is X Files, I tried as I’d never watched it first time around but I found it quite dated and didn’t want to wait for it to get good

Mags1001 · 15/02/2026 15:20

I'm working my way through 22 years worth of QI
I thought I was doing well until the had Victoria Wood & Carrie fisher as guests.both who have been dead for 10 years

pompomtiddly · 16/02/2026 12:42

EleanorReally · 15/02/2026 10:17

Spooks
but is it too dated?

spooks doesn’t feeltoo dated because there is a big emphasis on the characters/relationships, There are great story arcs which close with the end of the final series-unlike a lot of programs which seem to end midair.

pompomtiddly · 16/02/2026 12:47

GrandmaMazur · 15/02/2026 10:21

The Americans is one of the best programmes I’ve ever watched.

Same.

BestIsWest · 16/02/2026 12:48

We’ve just started The Sopranos. First time for me.

I’m also on my regular rewatch of The West Wing. I rewatch it every year or so. Currently on S3. Again.

House, Grey’s, Call The Midwife and Unforgotten are all things I’d watch again.

BestIsWest · 16/02/2026 12:50

Oh, I never watched ER. Now there’s a possibility. I love a medical drama.

rafeal · 16/02/2026 12:51

I rewatched a few series of ER a couple of years ago and loved it. Like seeing old friends. I don’t find things so dated if I watched them first time around.

Depending on how I feel though I find the nostalgia either comforting or depressing. For example watching ER reminded me of being young and totally carefree pre kids, but sometimes I would realise that the series I was watching was pre 9/11 and pre Putin & Trump & Brexit. & Covid (by a long way) and life felt so much more secure.

rafeal · 16/02/2026 12:53

Answering your question though I would love to watch Greys Anatomy but it seems so long I’d be watching it for years.

Lottapianos · 16/02/2026 12:58

'Im on season 5 of Nurse Jackie and its feeling like a bit of a chore... loved the first 3 seasons'

Where can you find Nurse Jackie? I started it years ago and would like to get back into it. I'm on my third rewatch of The Sopranos and I adore Edie Falco!

I love the sound of Peaky Blinders but there's so much to catch up on! Have never watched it, maybe I should start after The Sopranos, or maybe it's too much heavy crime and violence

CountryGirlInTheCity · 16/02/2026 12:58

We’re currently re-watching the original Frasier (11 series) and still loving it and we’ve seen West Wing beginning - end three times. I don’t mind there being loads of episodes, more to enjoy.

Wondering whether to go with Mad Men or Grey’s Anatomy next. We haven’t seen either before so will be keeping an eye on here for views on both!

trappedCatAsleepOnMe · 16/02/2026 12:59

I've just started re-watching ER. I saw a few episode on 4s digital service but stopped now it's on netficks and saw few more over weekend. I don't rememeber much of the first series TBH and it does sometimes feel dated.

Most long running ones - like House, Stargate SG-, westwing various star trek series and Agatha Christie series or QI- I'm used to dipping in and out of as they turn up on TV randomly and have seen once through mostly.

There a few series like Game of Thrones and Umbrella academy where last season totally ruined it so won't re-watch. I stopped Peaky Blinder before last season and glad I did.

One piece anime is giving me pause because of it's length - worried I'll start it and it will move service providers and it's a lot. I'm only intertested as saw live action version from Netflicks and was taken with it - so can just wait for the second season there.

trappedCatAsleepOnMe · 16/02/2026 13:01

Re-watched first few series of call the midwife then it goes downhill so stop.

Tried Mad Men due to all the hype -- just didn't click with it.

whirlyhead · 16/02/2026 13:05

I always think Call The Midwife would be a lot more interesting if it didn't have any babies in it.

pompomtiddly · 16/02/2026 13:15

I recently watched Boardwalk Empire which was ok but I only watched the last series reluctantly for completing its sake
i really enjoyed
Mrs Maisel
Clocking Off
Last Tango In Halifax
Catastrophe
Shetland
Trying
Unforgotten
Brideshead Revisited
The Tudors
Jordskott was fantastic
as was the man in the high castle

I couldn’t get into
Mad Men
The Sopranos
Breaking Bad
GOT

NoDrums · 16/02/2026 13:16

Yes Minister

princesspadam · 16/02/2026 13:23

ER is far superior to Greys and has aged suprisingly well.

Ive re-watched the whole thing 2 or 3 times
same with Sopranos

i like to re-watch six feet under

i I can’t be arsed with anything over 6 seasons generally

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 16/02/2026 13:53

RedRiverShore6 · 14/02/2026 22:32

ER looks very, very long, longer than Criminal Minds that I ploughed through recently. Just finished Person of Interest which was over 100 episodes so not as long but still long. Watching Trying now which is quite short then may embark on ER marathon

Just finished rewatching Person of Interest yesterday, I'd forgotten how bloody good it is. I may have gotten some onions in my eyes over the last few episodes.

RedRiverShore6 · 16/02/2026 16:22

I loved Person of Interest and a good ending I thought, I also liked Michael Emerson in Lost which I rewatched recently. I started on ER and enjoying, it seems the sort of thing I don't have to rush with which is good. I also want to watch The Man in the High Castle again so I will probably start that as well.

I couldn't get into The Wire, Peaky Blinders or The Sopranos

LBB2020 · 16/02/2026 18:01

We rewatched Lost and Walking Dead during Covid. DH wants to rewatch Walking Dead again as we haven’t seen the end (they stopped filming during Covid) but I’m not sure I can watch it all again!
I recently rewatched Desperate Housewives and am currently watching Greys Anatomy for the first time (on season 12 and it’s starting to go downhill)

I've joined at started re-watching ER now that it's on Netflix. There are 15 seasons, each with 22 episodes - not like shows these days with far fewer episodes per season. I saw all of ER when it was on originally but watching it all again now.

Me too! I think im only on episode 6 of the first series: there’s a lot to go!
