A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Kemi wins all four head to heads in a More in Common survey on who voters think would make the best PM.

That’s fantastic. Well done Kemi. There’s some on here who are highly denigrating (it probably includes not male, pale, stale enough), she’s better than the rest and people can see it.

That's fantastic. It shows that her calm, considered approach (with humour where appropriate) is cutting through.

I so hope that she comes good at the next GE.

Well done Kemi!

The silver lining to all this chaos is that if Labour do lurch to the left - as seems inevitable - the carnage which follows may make Kemi's sensible and well-thought-out approach more widely appealing. Less desire for 'change at any cost'!

I watched the clip where Andrew Neil asked Raynwrin opposition to explain what tax decisions she would make and how much it would bring, and she showed that she had absolutely no clue. No clue at all about what changes the Conservatives had brought in - or even what those taxes really were - let alone hoew much it would raise/cost to change them. He didn't even get as far as her understanding of unintended consequences - she clearly hadn't even thought through intended consequences!

All she knew was that she wanted MORE.

Some of the electorate - including some on here - might have the same blind, uncomprehending view and support her. But if it happens in reality, the shit will seriously hit the fan. I really don't want the hit we're going to take - but if it drives people back to safe Conservatives before the next election, perhaps there will be something left in the UK to rebuild with.

Edited

My guess is that Starmer cut a deal with Rayner (& possibly Burnham), that he would listen to their constituents, and move to the left - possibly also in an attempt to head off carnage on 26th Feb.

I am relying on deteriorating economic data to kibosh whatever it is they think they will achieve.

I’ve always maintained that many of us are in a state of open conflict with this government - it’s that serious.

Excellent news. Glad she's cutting through :-)

Yes, it's good to have some evidence that Kemi's improved popularity can be read as an endorsement to lead. Whereas, say Ed Davey's likeability doesn't seem to translate the same way.

Agree with this.

Burnham and Rayner were making sure to be photographed together in Gorton and Denton at the weekend.
And yes, dh and I definitely feel in conflict with this govt.

Same, think they’re the most anti private sector govt we’ve had for at least 45 years. Yes there’s been some kind of deal…

Yep this is the difference to the Blair gov, and yes he had many faults but he knew the private sector mattered a lot if you wanted to spend.

Whereistheejectbutton · 11/02/2026 08:45

That’s what terrified me, like the SNP we have a govt here that thinks they can impose endless costs on the private sector with continual net positive consequences. We appear to have dinosaurs who do believe there’s no issue with the state setting many people’s wage through the minimum wage and controlling everyone else through a raft of taxes.

Whereistheejectbutton · 11/02/2026 08:49

I see Cambell is saying Starmer et al need to stand for something - that’s the thing, they do stand for something, but its unpopular, it’s a high tax
low growth society with state creep, that has very little to offer anyone that doesn’t want to rely on or have much faith in the government to run organisations or their lives.

EasternStandard · 11/02/2026 09:08

Starmer will struggle against the sheer scale of Labour backbenchers who are speaking up and want to spend more basically. McSweeney kept them in line. He’s without that and will fold.

Fine. Taxing more won’t be wanted by the electorate.

Upstartled · 11/02/2026 09:26

No, it isn't. In fact, there has never been more people resistant to raising taxes further since...well the graph I had yesterday went as far back and 1980.

DiySteve · 11/02/2026 09:30

I am relying on the G&D voters seeing through Starmer’s latest shape-shifting, and sending Labour packing on the 26th.

That should result in a fresh bout of infighting.

EasternStandard · 11/02/2026 09:48

The odds favour Greens, or Reform maybe over Labour but I’m not sure how close they usually are on by-elections.

Upstartled · 11/02/2026 10:09

Yep, current odds on Labour in G&D are 8/1. It is the lame horse of the race.

EasternStandard · 11/02/2026 09:48

Labour would doubtless try to spin a Green win over Reform, as a win for Labour.

That’s how low things have become in No. 10.

TheNuthatch · 11/02/2026 10:59

If anyone needs cheering up, yesterday's Daily T pod is worth a listen.
They interview Karl Turner (Labour MP). Obviously he has a lot to say about the batshit plans to end jury trials, but he is also scathing about PS Vat and the farmers tax.

Upstartled · 11/02/2026 11:02

Andrew Gwynn won with just over 50% of the vote share. He had over 13000 more votes than the reform candidate who came second and the green who were just behind them.

What they will have displayed is defeat through cowardice. The party allowing this to happen because they couldn't countenance how weak Burnham would make Starmer look.

I don’t know if by-election odds are as reliable an indicator as general but Starmer will feel it if the below pans out.

Here’s a good article from the Independent who are also now fed up with Starmer, some good quotes on how people would have voted for Burnham but not anymore

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/gorton-denton-byelection-starmer-labour-reform-greens-b2917427.html?test_group=lighteradlayout

But I thought Starmer was ‘working class’ again? I mean, he says he is - he removed his tie and rolled up his sleeves.

I mean, his father was a tool-maker, don’t you know.

Yep, same sentiment where I live. Labour will be lucky to come third in G&D without Burnham.

Blimey - thread 27 already! I pop into these threads sometimes, because I can't stand this bloody government, but my goodness they're so much worse than even I was expecting. This shambles they've created, an economic doom-loop and now they're baying for KS's blood and trying to get rid of him. Bloody hell! It's like the worst days of the last Tory government, which Labour were so critical of! But they're just the same, only the country is in an even worse state now, after 18 months of their frigging ineptitude. It's so depressing 😰

Compared to the tories they are saints. Our current situation is all down to them.

Kemi needs to come out against Starmer and his 'Working Class' Shite and ask him what his first job was. An internship perhaps after Surrey council paid the fees for his 6th form place and he was seen as some sought of gifted pupil. It was not a job down the 'Pit' nor a YTS or something arranged by the Labour Exchange...

This, of cause was in the 1970's when two options were available for bright children Direct Grammar Schools and the Assisted Places Scheme. The, dropping of the Assisted Places Scheme by the Blair Government being the Appetizer for the introduction of VAT on Private Schools some 27 years later. The wanton destruction of Educational opportunities for those who do not subscribe for Comprehensive Schooling is complete for the time being. The final nail in the coffin being the abolition of the 163 English Grammar Schools perhaps being a little bit more difficult, than the Blair Project /Starmergeddon assumed it would be..
