Button moon

I came across button moon last night on amazon prime and watched some with my 10 year old daughter. I loved that when I was little in the 80s. Dd really liked it too but kept on pointing out the men in that back (clearly visible) moving the puppets, wonder how that escaped me as a child 🤔. And then the spaceship for Mr spoon to go to button moon is actually a tin of heinz beans, tin of pink salmon and a funnel 🤣 brilliant!! Im going to watch some more tonight.

Anyone know of any other 80s cartoons available to bring back memories and laugh at things we didnt notice back then?.

Anyone remember Mary, Mungo and Midge? They lived in a tower block and had to go up to their flat in a life. I thought it was the very height of modern sophistication!

Loved it! Though Mary would have social services at the door in this day and age... as far as I can remember, there was never any sign of her parents!

(I also seem to remember feeling slightly jealous that she was allowed to leave her toys lying around. 😄)

Bottom moon - a theme tune I’ve never forgotten either (and I’m 45 now!)

Oh my goodness I absolutely adored Mr Benn.

To this day if anyone says 'And as if by magic' I silently add 'the shopkeeper appeared'.

I met the man who created Button moon at the Puppet Museum in Glasgow when I took my Brownies and Guides to a workshop years ago. Kids thought me and their dads we off our heads when we were excitedly chattering when I was telling them at pick up time. Glen Michaels cavalcade with Palladin and Rusty were essential viewing as was Data Run, and paper play with itsy and bitsyhttps://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=itsy+and+bitsy&cvid=4f8c8de7190a427ba7c1ecea45ed42ab&gs_lcrp=EgRlZGdlKgYIABBFGDkyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQABhAMgYIAhAAGEAyBggDEAAYQDIGCAQQABhAMgYIBRAAGEAyBggGEAAYQDIGCAcQABhAMgYICBAAGEAyCAgJEOkHGPxV0gEINDcwMWowajGoAgCwAgA&PC=U531&ru=%2fsearch%3fq%3ditsy%2band%2bbitsy%26cvid%3d4f8c8de7190a427ba7c1ecea45ed42ab%26gs_lcrp%3dEgRlZGdlKgYIABBFGDkyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQABhAMgYIAhAAGEAyBggDEAAYQDIGCAQQABhAMgYIBRAAGEAyBggGEAAYQDIGCAcQABhAMgYICBAAGEAyCAgJEOkHGPxV0gEINDcwMWowajGoAgCwAgA%26FORM%3dANAB01%26PC%3dU531&mmscn=vwrc&mid=BCEC6E1E35C6827E78C8BCEC6E1E35C6827E78C8&FORM=WRVORC&ntb=1&msockid=c12a7be3005a11f1b25720526a11fde1 Paperplay

@ConstanzeMozart I agree Bagpuss was amazing. @Flannelfeet and the things you missed as a child. Imagine my horror when showing my children an episode of Bagpuss of all the ones I could have chosen I chose Ship in a Bottle.

He catches a mermaid with his fishing line.

She has no seashell bra, just bare breasts. Bare breasts. He refers to her as a child. Gross. Video below at the right part.

Oh and for the people who mentioned Ulysses 31 - have you heard the cello version of the theme by Samara Ginsberg? It’s incredible and once you’ve listened to that you will want to go through all the other’s she did (Airwolf is my other favourite).

The Moomins, Captain Caveman, Dangermouse, Penelope Pitstop.

Edited

DS chunters to himself like Muttley when he is annoyed. We have started playing Wacky Races clips to him when he is in a mood. Sometimes he laughs and it snaps him out of it, sometimes he storms upstairs. Either way, we no longer have a grumpy child to deal with.

I liked Long Distance Clara but my favourite character was Mr Jupiter's (the astronomer) dog Flash - he was like a white mop head on legs! Watson being the next best character - Mr Baskerville's dog!

TOTALLY don't remember that.
I suppose when you're a kid nudity doesn't bother you.

I was just thinking of the moomins, loved that too and yep whacky races.

Top cat!! Loved that!

It occurred to me after seeing the stage production of Guys and Dolls that Top Cat is basically a Damon Runyan story in cartoon form. The distinctive idioms, and the slightly questionable lifestyles Grin

Still remember the song...we're off to Button moon, fly with Mr Spoon, Button Moon...!!!! Catchy little tune! 😄

😱 I watched this with my eldest I alway sang ‘we’ll follow Mr Spoon’

He also loved Rosie and Jim, one about a black and white cat voiced by Dawn French, one with lots of vegetables in it and Fraggle rock.

WorriedRelative · 02/02/2026 17:27

Oh no, have I been singing it far too regularly wrong all these years? I always thought it was We're off to Button Moon, follow Mr Spoon, Button Moon, Button Mooonnnn.

Mikehunt2018 · 02/02/2026 17:28

Children's telly (as it exists now) is so po-faced and safe in comparison to these weird, wonderful and sometimes, psychedelic shows.

Does anyone remember Dogtanian and the three muskehounds?

I came to say this, this was my favourite!

And She-Ra!

FrameThePost · 02/02/2026 17:29

@ConstanzeMozart I clearly didn't notice at the time otherwise it would have stuck with me. It is so blatant too, not just a hint of breasts, but full view. I was shocked to my core when I saw it. Went right over my children's heads Grin

We still sing theme tunes in this house from our childhood. Dh is the same age as me.

We (me, my husband and 7 year old) love watching Rainbow. It's such a shame they've never revived it like they did with Sooty.

MamaBobo · 02/02/2026 17:30

Bod used to choose a milkshake at the end of each episode @NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo (love your username!). John Le Mesurier who did the voices was Sgt Wilson in Dad’s Army.

Arthur Lowe (who was Captain Mainwaring in Dad’s Army) did the voices for The Mr Men.

We loved Kissyfur @Starlight1979…my Dad liked it as I recall. Loved Bagpuss (especially the cute mouse song) and Mr Benn….couldn’t believe there were only 13 episodes of Bagpuss and 14 of Mr Benn!

Glen Michael’s Cavalcade was a proper programme, on a Sunday afternoon on STV. It showed cheap cartoons that you never really saw anywhere else. You could ask for a birthday mention from Paladin the talking lamp. A childhood ambition that was never realised. Glen Michael only died recently.

I always wanted to go on Runaround when I was a child….all that grabbing tennis balls and running “arahnd” at the behest of Mike Reid.

I was a contestant on Starstrider though…Starstrider was Jim Carter…better known as Mr Carson in Downton, and his sidekick Wart was Sylvester McCoy who went on to be Dr Who. 1984 I think.
