Button moon

I came across button moon last night on amazon prime and watched some with my 10 year old daughter. I loved that when I was little in the 80s. Dd really liked it too but kept on pointing out the men in that back (clearly visible) moving the puppets, wonder how that escaped me as a child 🤔. And then the spaceship for Mr spoon to go to button moon is actually a tin of heinz beans, tin of pink salmon and a funnel 🤣 brilliant!! Im going to watch some more tonight.

Anyone know of any other 80s cartoons available to bring back memories and laugh at things we didnt notice back then?.

What’s the programme with Hartley Hare? That was a bit spooky.

And how about the public information films about dangerous pylons or lakes?

Hartley Hare was fecking terrifying. I'm not even going to google it.

Made me think of Basil Brush (who I loved), who was clearly based on his creator's eccentric and alcoholic upper-class uncle or something.

Has anyone mentioned Fingermouse yet?

Simpler times!

Fingermouse was utterly charming. Wasn't there a scampi?

MunicipalDarwinism · 02/02/2026 16:42

Pipkins. Hartley hare certainly was a bit creepy.

I think it was called Pipkins or something? I vaguely remember it (and likewise being a bit creeped out by it for some reason). There were other animals in it too I think... a pig? I need to look it up.

The public info films were next level scary - the spirit of dark water still haunts me!

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but would she like Knightmare? I used to love that when I was around 10 years old.

Ohh she might... I need to have a look for that later on, that was actually quite good.

Fingerbobs. Must have been 1970s going by what the puppeteer wore.
Bill and Ben.....and Weeeed.
Andy Pandy (it must have been repeats by the time I was watching in the early 70s).
The Monkees. My first crush was on Davy Jones when I was about 5. I have seen them perform live twice!
Blue Peter when it was Valerie Singleton, Lesley Judd Peter Purves and John Noakes.

My user name is inspired by Button Moon!

I rewatched some a while back and there was some rather inappropriate bits, such as “Mrs Spoon isn’t going to Button Moon today, she’s got something to do. Ah, here comes the milkman!”

Or the one where Tina sees someone dressed scruffily through her telescope. “Tina thinks it’s a tramp.”

🤣🤣🤣 I used to watch dotaman on bbc2 when there was nothing on, still have no idea what they were talking about.

Even longer ago was Cuir Car, featuring a very young Runrig.

I remain terrified of pylons and sparklers to this day (I'm 51). I give pylons a wide berth, and hell would have to freeze over before I handled a sparkler. They obviously did an effective job!

I always found Bod a bit creepy but I hadn't realised till recently it was voiced by lovely Derek Griffiths from Play School.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002p1zj

It says there he wrote and performed the theme tune but the voice was John Le Mesurier (Mr Mainwaring out of Dads Army)
Thanks for the link, will have a look

Was Mr Benn the wee man in the suit with the hat that made his head look square? 😆

Here he is!

I remember Glenn Michael’s Cavalcade @OP but you won’t get any recognition outside Scotland as I’m pretty sure it was only on there.. he had a lamp called Paladin that was quite sarcastic. But I don’t really remember much else about it, I think it was maybe more of a continuity announcer type thing?

Laughing so much at the previous poster who said that Dangermouse in Gaelic (Donnie Murdo) was better than Sons & Daughters! I know the theme tune to S&D so well as it was the cue to switch over!

She left the milk out all day yesterday, dd said look, the milkman brought the milk before Mr spoon went to button moon and its still sitting there...what about the cornflakes they needed it for? 🤔.

Escape Into Night was also spooky.

wordler · 02/02/2026 16:47

Fingerbobs - seems hard to imagine now that we were captivated by a man with quite basic finger puppets playing with them for a TV show.

Apparently Glen Michael lived to 99 and only died 6 months ago, that’s lovely

Yddraigoldragon · 02/02/2026 16:50

Love the Runrig clip!

Another vote here for Stoppit and Tidyup, narrated by Terry Wogan, loved the characters Calm Down, and the big bad I Said NO!

Tiredmumno1 · 02/02/2026 16:50

Ooo I think I have some more - Simon and the witch, black beauty, sooty & sweep, the shoe people and heathcliff.

i am sure they were about the same time like Sesame Street and mr men? Oh and the smurfs.

Hello19834 · 02/02/2026 16:51

Oh God that's unearthed some memories of my childhood..
Here's what I used to watch:

Rainbow
Sooty and Sweep
Pob
Trap Door
Get Along Gang
What a Mess
Clangers
Wombles
He Man
Jimbo
Willo the Wisp

ScaredOfFlying · 02/02/2026 16:51

Do you also remember the Sullivans? A black and white Australian period soap opera that started with a boy stealing another boy’s cap and running away. In my head it was the end of kids’ lunchtime Tv and time to go back to school (I lived next to the school and always came home for my lunch).
