I'm enjoying reading the post "Where is the most boring place you've visited" but it's making me wonder what are considered the most amazing places visited?
Maybe we can build the dream wish list for destinations?

Personally I vote for the western fjords of Norway. Every turn is picture perfect scenery and the people were so nice.

The Tag Mahal. Breath taking.

I found Agra so bizarre. A proper shack city with probably the most beautiful marble building in the middle of it.

As someone who grew up surrounded by forest, mountains and lakes, I think deserts are amazing so Sossusvlei/deadvlei in Namibia

Safari in Botswana was also brilliant

Vancouver Island in the depths of winter. It felt so wild and rugged. Absolutely loved it!

Shrinkhole · 26/01/2026 21:28

The West coast of Scotland. Particularly the Torridon/ Assynt area. The beauty of the mountains, lochs and beaches and the amazing wildlife and seafood. I found it unforgettable.

Diving down and swimming over the drop off on the edge of a coral reef in Egypt.

First the temperature change, warm to cool, and then turning back and looking down and seeing beneath you the sun glinting off thousands and thousands of red gold fish. From just under your feet, gradually fading down down twinkling less and less into inky gloom.

Just unforgettable.

New Zealand. Both lived there and travelled extensively, and it was all just SO beautiful. Hiking in the Coromandel, jumping off rope bridges into glacier fed rivers, cadging a helicopter ride over Twizel, seeing hectors dolphins off of Gemstone beach, swimming in Lake Taupo, just Fiordland generally and, of course, visiting the Hobbiton film set and bungee jumping near Queenstown… I could go on and on!

The Grand Canyon.
Berlin.
Värmland, Sweden.
Rome: most of all the Pantheon.

Another few votes for New Zealand (Kaikoura specifically, absolutely breathtaking), Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto) and Italy!

HRTQueen · 26/01/2026 21:41

Sahara desert I saw a mirage it’s just mind blowing and so is seeing the moon set and the sun rise

Thailand especially Phi Phi islands. I went when there was just a few beach huts with a few shack restaurants/bars. It was so beautiful I cried

i also love Italy so many beautiful places

Vaguelyclassical · 26/01/2026 21:41

Granada. Not only the wonderfulness of the Alhambra and the Moorish gardens but also sitting in a restaurant high up in the Old City watching the sun set over the Alhambra. Toledo is pretty amazing too--the medieval Christian/Moorish/Jewish elements simultaneously and the walled city.

GreyhoundLurcher · 26/01/2026 21:41

The Cook Islands - paradise! I got married on One Foot Island nearly 20 years ago!

Makingpeace · 26/01/2026 21:43

The land of the thunder dragon, Bhutan. The Tiger's Nest is absolutely stunning!

Cismyfatarse · 26/01/2026 21:48

The Colombian part of the Amazon. Utterly remote, perfect, unspoiled and very, very beautiful. We saw so much wildlife including pink dolphins.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2026 22:04

it’s impossible to choose - how do you compare rafting through the Grand Canyon with the art of Florence or the magic of the temples of Paestum, or the wildlife and scenery of Mull and the outer Hebrides? Or for cities, London - we take it for granted but it’s an amazing city.

Odiebay · 26/01/2026 22:09

Iceland. Iceland.iceland

Also loved Switzerland

MollyFeather · 26/01/2026 22:10

Few of the beaches in the Seychelles

Tarkan · 26/01/2026 22:13

Juneau, Alaska. I was staying with friends who lived there so they took me to some of their favourite places and it was just absolutely beautiful everywhere I looked. I got to hold a bit of ice from a glacier. Bald eagles absolutely everywhere but I loved seeing them every single time. And my friends took me to see an old gold mining town which had been abandoned and reclaimed by the forest. It was fascinating.

TragicMuse · 26/01/2026 22:14

Petra. It was amazing, huge, extraordinary, beautiful…

I went for my 40th, and would go again to see all the bits I missed.

choirmumoftwo · 26/01/2026 22:14

Antarctica. Totally impossible to describe or explain how it made me feel. I’ve never felt so emotional leaving a place in my life.

Dappy777 · 26/01/2026 22:15

I loved south west Ireland. I went there in 1998 when Ireland was still a (relatively) empty country. Coming from horrible, noisy, crowded Essex it seemed like paradise. I couldn’t believe somewhere could be so beautiful and yet so quiet. The pace of life was so slow. Also, because people had space and time they seemed so much more friendly. When you cram too many people together, as in modern Britain, they start to get on each other’s nerves. The atmosphere becomes nastier and more aggressive.

Ireland has remained in my mind as a kind of lost paradise. I still think that is how we’re supposed to live. Not in the noisy, crowded hell of modern Britain, where developers are jamming new houses onto every bit of spare land and the country lanes are clogged with traffic. Just calm and quiet and rural and beautiful, with people smiling and saying good morning, and fields and meadows and horses and silence all around you.

The Highlands of Scotland and the Lake District.
