A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Just catching up.

[DH went to France last Sunday to visit relatives; last night his vehicle was written off by an HGV whose driver was high on drink and drugs. I would have been a widow this morning if DH hadn't had his wits about him. He was stationary at some temporary traffic lights, keeping an eye on the lorry speeding up behind him; when he realised it wasn't going to stop, he got out and ran for cover to the other side of the road. He has minor cuts from flying debris but is otherwise okay.]

Moving on, it was being reported earlier today that just before Keir and his entourage landed in Beijing he'd got hold of the intercom and was making a speech of some sort, jokily ending it with a quip about landing the plane safely (or something like that).

He's the modern version of Nero - fiddling while the UK is burning.

Omg that’s horrendous. And very very lucky he was looking in the rear view mirror, thank god. He must be v shook up. And obv the driver was shouting like crazy cos he knows he’s fcked up and could’ve killed some one. And hopefully lost his licence now before he does.

Yes, perspective. Bet you can’t wait to see him!! Sliding doors and all that. x

TheNuthatch · 28/01/2026 19:13

Bet you can't wait to get him home Dancing. You have a very good excuse to indulge in a stiff drink, must be tough for you having to wait until Saturday.

You're right, @TheNuthatch, Saturday can't come quickly enough for me (and hopefully DH). Annoyingly, the M3 is is closed between two junctions this weekend so getting to Heathrow to pick him up is going to be fun (not) - but I don't care, I can't wait to see him.

Bloody hell @DancingFerret . I hope the lorry driver gets the book thrown at him. What a close shave.

justasking111 · 28/01/2026 21:22

We're on the Ireland to Wales ferry route. Some of the European drivers it's been said take stuff to stay awake which always worries me when driving on the A55 I prefer to be ahead than behind them.

SpaceRaccoon · 28/01/2026 21:48

@DancingFerret bloody hell! Horrifying, I hope the driver is jailed.

I'd never really thought about it until this week. Based on what happened to DH, I'd much rather be behind an impaired driver and able to brake and hold back if necessary. In front of someone like that you have no way of avoiding the idiot (criminal) driving dangerously behind you.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/01/2026 22:33

@DancingFerret just catching up

What a horrible shock. I hope he's getting over it and I hope you're holding up too 💐

Very busy day today, so no idea what's happened in the news and I don't think I'm going to look at it - it will keep till tomorrow.

Edited

Labour changed the context, typically nasty stuff from them. I’m not surprised they’re using this kind of thing, look at their briefing against Burnham.

Their response to it is utterly stupid as well. They've pointed out that Reform has said it'll have police doing actual policing on the streets, not policing tweets etc, so have declared them hypocrites. Clearly missing the point that Reform mean that police won't go after the Lucy Connolly-type tweets or gender critical women. Not that they won't report posts which breach electoral laws.

Labour really don't like democracy if they're happy for electoral laws to be broken. (I bet they'd squeal like a stuck pig if the shoe was on the other foot, mind.)

Starmer on the news just now talking about the talks he's had in China so far: According to him, they've been very constructive (whatever that means) and he's pleased to announce a reduction in the tariffs on whisky and the easing of visa restrictions. There was some other waffle as well, but I wasn't listening at that point.

Whisky, visas? Should they really have been first on his list?

Jesus. I'm sure somebody thinks those things are important!

If that's all he's managed to achieve, then it's a pretty pointless trip. Surely they could've been discussed / agreed on Teams!

Next he’ll be talking about beer and bingo. Although possibly not his voting base anymore..

Dear Cod, China prefers Labour governments. Well, they would, wouldn't they?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15508245/Xi-Jinping-Keir-Starmer-turns-relations-China-UK.html

Agree with you. Well yeh of course. Let’s see how that works out.

Pacificsunshine · 29/01/2026 09:56

Front page of the Telegraph today.

Apparently he opened up closed cases pro bono to hound veterans. In an unstable world, we may need our military more than ever. How can we depend upon them if we betray them like this?

Another one from the Telegraph: Starmer's "oikophobia". The article hits many nails on the head.

The Guardian on KS's orgy of kowtowing in China: The comments are interesting in that many people now recognise his true political leanings. I doubt even diehard Labour voters realised what they were actually voting in.

The UK needs him gone ASAP.

I get the sense that Labour leader and PM are just boxes ticked on a list of things he fancies doing. I'm not sure he's passionate about much (not currently, anyway, maybe his passion was the type of cases which are being revealed).

There is a concentrated campaign against him in the press. How long can he cling on?

Pacificsunshine · 29/01/2026 10:41

Is it a concentrated campaign? Or just the scrutiny that anyone in power would get from a free press?

EasternStandard · 29/01/2026 10:45

I don’t think the media are any tougher on Starmer and co than Rishi Sunak or post / partygate on the Cons. Maybe even less as they were ringing it in by then on anti stuff.

I think Labourites use the media as an excuse, see ‘poor comms’ apparently. They’re mostly comms in that they pump out soundbites, lines and photo ops daily, they could give us a break from them tbf.

EmeraldRoulette · 29/01/2026 11:02

I'm going to have to phrase this very carefully

In terms of what Labour voters thought they were voting for, I think some of them actively welcome the global approach that he takes. And they would have the same reaction to seeing a flag as Emily Thornberry had. That's only from some of the ones I know.

Of course there would've been an element of just getting rid of the Tories. Or perhaps people who aren't really paying attention and thought he would be another version of Tony Blair - and thought that was a good thing.

wrt to the misrepresented clip about Matt Goodwin and Manchester, I thought that kind of thing had to be reported to the electoral commission - not the police? Or does it have to go via the police first? Maybe that's the protocol.
