A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I don't know, but this is spreading disinformation. Perhaps Starmer has his eye on the top job at the bbc when he's booted out of No.10.

Are there any rules on MN for posters copying gifted articles from this thread onto another thread for the purpose of scoffing? 🤔 Embarrassing.

😂😂 Quite. Perhaps thieving using others’ gifted articles defines them, like foreign language titles. It’s So Them. As bob Mortimer might say.

I can assure you that I never name change.

I wasn't talking about you justasking 😁 I think long running posters aren't always going to agree but I think we can all agree that we aren't swooping in from nowhere to tell people off and then flouncing off again.

No not you justasking!

We were discussing others who visit the thread for a bunfight occasionally, usually late at night and two sheets to the wind.

😬

TheNuthatch · 28/01/2026 14:47

Absolutely not aimed at you in any way @justasking111 . I was having two seperate conversations there, one with you, one with Upstartled about something else. 💐

I knew exactly who it would be, fancy that.

Made a little bet with myself and was right!

38thparallel · 28/01/2026 14:48

Starmer undertook the case pro bono, clearly thinking it of considerable legal and moral importance. His junior colleague was fellow Doughty Street Chambers occupant Richard Hermer, now Lord Hermer, Attorney General for England and Wales. They were assisted by Phil Shiner, a solicitor whose firm, Public Interest Lawyers, generated thousands of complaints against armed forces personnel. Shiner was struck off in 2017 and convicted of fraud in 2024.

This is from the Spectator and refers to a soldier who was cleared by his commanding officer and the Military Police.
I appreciate that Starmer’s circle is anti military but I wonder what the general public think.

What a vile dishonest individual.

As for the other two weasels.

It's probably 'not in the spirit' as they say. But leave them to it, god knows they're having to scrape the barrel for any semblance of positive news about Labour, let them try to spin to their hearts' desire. I swear they mostly live in upside down world.

They're certainly creating a lot of free pr for reform.

Edited

From 2004 to 2014 he [Phil Shiner] was a regular contributor to The Guardian newspaper.

Shocker

@placemats Oh good, another late night visit from you.

I'm sure Lee Anderson was welcomed with open arms in Ashton u Lyne. Reform are leading in the polls there and Ange is going to lose her seat! Perhaps Lee travelled an extra half a km on purpose just to rub her nose in it.

Was she there to say hello, or was she in her flat at the opposite end of the country?

If Reform get in they can take a bow.

Just catching up.

[DH went to France last Sunday to visit relatives; last night his vehicle was written off by an HGV whose driver was high on drink and drugs. I would have been a widow this morning if DH hadn't had his wits about him. He was stationary at some temporary traffic lights, keeping an eye on the lorry speeding up behind him; when he realised it wasn't going to stop, he got out and ran for cover to the other side of the road. He has minor cuts from flying debris but is otherwise okay.]

Moving on, it was being reported earlier today that just before Keir and his entourage landed in Beijing he'd got hold of the intercom and was making a speech of some sort, jokily ending it with a quip about landing the plane safely (or something like that).

He's the modern version of Nero - fiddling while the UK is burning.

38thparallel · 28/01/2026 16:40

I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s experience - that must have been terrifying.

Jesus Christ @DancingFerret, your dh did an amazing job of saving himself, what a disaster that could have been. Is he back home?

Januaryescape · 28/01/2026 17:02

thats appalling @DancingFerret thats amazing he was so quick thinking!

EasternStandard · 28/01/2026 17:20

How scary @DancingFerretI’m glad he’s ok.

@38thparallel, @Upstartled, @Januaryescape, @EasternStandard.

Thank you. He's shaken up, and I think he's at the stage of thinking and re-thinking what happened and what could have happened. The lorry driver was completely out of it, yelling obscenities and being generally aggressive, throwing punches at DH (which he was able to sidestep). The saving grace is DH is a fluent French speaker, which helps a lot in a situation like this.

He's cancelled the ferry and is going to fly back on Saturday.

In all honesty, I'm not handling it well (eyeing up the whisky decanter). If we didn't have workmen in the house all week, I'd have jumped on the next plane to Bordeaux.

TheNuthatch · 28/01/2026 18:28

@DancingFerret What a shock! Your dh did so well to save himself. I hope the driver has been arrested and never get behind a wheel again.
Events like that put life into perspective don't they. Hugs to you both x
