I think the first part of this is very well put. (So is the second, but it’s the first I wanted to comment on.)
I do think Starmer is genuine in the narrow sense that he does believe in international law, treaties, accords and so on. And I think quite a few Labour and LibDem supporters think the same way.
To me it’s a rather unpleasant and foolish view of the world because it comes from a belief that the UK is somehow less decent or worthwhile than other countries or groups of other countries. Even decades ago Orwell ridiculed this left-wing knee-jerk denigration of the UK.
It’s also a naive point of view.
But I do believe Starmer has real faith in it.
What is equally obvious about Starmer is his nauseating ambition. He is a terrible negotiator and deal maker because he can’t live with the idea of public failure. Everyone else is sacrificed to his ego. So we get shit deals, with the EU, with the US, with China, with Mauritius…
If you look at what rattles and frightens him - civil unrest, backbench anger, challenges from cabinet colleagues, failure in international agreements, etc - it’s all about damage to his own standing. He’s a horrible, incapable little man.
