A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Listening to Times Radio - ‘Starmer’s position is irredeemable’ Kim Johnson Labour MP

Also talking about how women tried to warn the powerful political men in the party but were ignored.

People being clearer now on what they want.

TwoTierBbq · 07/02/2026 08:27

@EasternStandard I've met men like starmer they are pretty rigid on what they understand and care about
We've seen time and time again interviews over the trans stuff and from female MP in his own party...women's issues are not on his radar ,Rotherham etc.

He doesn't get it and doesn't care meaning whatever mandleson was involved with he didn't see at so awful.

EasternStandard · 07/02/2026 08:29

I think he might go soon. If he has MPs candidly calling for him to go I don’t see how he can stay.

Lord Glasman sent a memo to McSweeney on the eve of Mandelson's appointment, basically pleading with him to change his mind and appoint somebody else, that he'd seen photos of Mandy blowing out candles with Epstein on Epstein's birthday cake and it was clear he was the wrong man for the job. He said Karen Pierce was doing a fine holding job and hadn't pissed off the Trump administration and that alone was a great achievement.

He also suggests that they could offer the job to Farage, that it might be enough to neutralise Reform as a threat to Labour. Which I think is a long shot.

I guess we can see some of why Glasman has been screaming from the sidelines for the last year with this government. It was so blatantly obvious to everyone that this what a stupendously bad idea but they have no regard for their members and no instinct for preservation.

EasternStandard · 07/02/2026 08:37

Caught the end of Gordon Brown saying Starmer should clean up the system and it should be him because ‘he knows the man’. Haven’t Labour realised these male pats on the back are what got us here?

Who cares if he knows him, Starmer knew Mandelson who knew Epstein, and that wasn’t enough to stop him appointing the ambassador either.

Yes, I'm beyond frustrated with the Labour defense line that Starmer may have known that Mandy and Epstein were mates and that Mandy was staying in Epstein's homes when he was in jail but Starmer didn't know the extent of their friendship. I mean, what did he think the unacceptable bar was for being mates with a trafficking, child rapist? What would he have wanted to see that was extra that would have made this worse? Was it because Epstein wasn't picking out Mandy's trousers yet?

Yes I heard him the other day. He said they told him to shut up over the risks.

There’s no comeback for this imo. Perhaps a caretaker will step in while they sort out who it should be.

Upstartled · 07/02/2026 09:02

Yes, they probably should do, which probably makes it all the more likely that they won't. Have they got anything right yet?

I was just going to comment on Brown's support for KS. TBH, I thought his responses were quite measured until then, especially in the light of Mandelson's very personal attacks on him which have only just surfaced.

Starmer is a misogynist who has presided over the most chaotic and destructive Government in recent UK history, yet some people insist he's a fundamentally good man. Corruption "rools" okay.

redange · 07/02/2026 09:19

I can just picture the scene at Mar a Lago, Angela first visit as Prime Minister when Angela notices that Mar A Lago has thirty five bathrooms Angela then reminisces that she had to use an outside Toilet until she was 15 ! ....

Angela Raynor was born to rule !

Yes it’s more male self assurance and arrogance. I met him he’s ok. Yeh no we’ve seen that version. Forget it.

TheNuthatch · 07/02/2026 09:24

I remember Glasman's interview on this back in September. He was told to shut up.

https://news.sky.com/story/labour-peer-lord-glasman-got-a-discreet-suggestion-to-shut-up-after-warning-no-10-about-mandelson-13432288

The Telegraph are reporting that No.10 were given a warning from Marco Rubio about Mandy's appointment due to his Epstein links.

archive.today/eEC14

Rayner is obviously trying to distance herself from all the Mandelson stuff. I keep reading that Streeting will be out of the game once all the files are released owing to his close relationship with Mandy. That could explain Rayner's intervention on the govt's ammendment on Wednesday. It benefits her for all of the info to be released.

Labour peer Lord Glasman got a 'discreet suggestion to shut up' after warning No 10 about Mandelson

The peer, who was the only Labour figure to attend Donald Trump's inauguration, said he was shown "photos of Peter Mandelson blowing out birthday candles with Jeffrey Epstein" while in the US last January.

Is that another version of "country ahead of party"?

Or just "Rayner ahead of both country and party" . As the missing £40k stamp duty payment also seems to illustrate.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/02/2026 00:20

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame that's brilliantly put

But incredibly worrying because if they haven't got the will to step forward now, they certainly haven't got the will or the ability to run a country.

@MNLurker1345 are you talking about that expression "managed decline"? That was used about the Thatcher government as well. What was the context in which you saw it? I'm just trying to figure out if it's the same reference.

When I use the term managed decline, I am not alluding to the deindustrialisation of the Thatcher years. I do though see where your connection might stem from.

Managed decline as a political strategy of this Labour government results from them adopting a broken state from the Tories, agreeing to continue the fiscal constraints of the Tory government, whilst lying about not taxing working people, and managing the broken state rather than governing it. The objective, in their philosophy is stability. Anchoring the ship rather than allowing it to sink.

This government does not believe in renewal, does not have a radical agenda for growth, does not believe in aspiration and in fact actively seeks to lower any aspirational drive.

They came into power with a triumphant attitude. The grown ups have arrived. Which wasn’t just cliche. They believe in technocratic rule based government. The grownups! But have no idea of how to actually run a country.

And so they manage rather than govern. This government does not believe that this country can be renewed and so they manage the decline, aim to stabilise and avoid blame. Hence the constant cry of them and their supporters to blame it on every thing other than themselves. But we can all see how that is going, can’t we?

EasternStandard · 07/02/2026 12:06

Coming in here for a gnhgvh 😬

The briefing wars are something. I get the impression McSweeney and Starmer plus allies will stop at nothing and are absolute bastards in this.

Rayner is holding her own brilliantly, I wonder who advises her. She probably is better than Starmer at briefing her own views without that much coaching and help.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/02/2026 12:22

We've just had Labour canvassers at the door asking us to hold our noses and vote for them to keep Reform out. DH was at the door, not me, so they didn't feel the full force of my feelings. He was rather more diplomatic, saying he was politically homeless.

Oh really? Are you in a constituency with upcoming locals? My DH and kids are under orders to yell for me if we get canvassers, not that'll we'll see them for a few years now.

Yep. And not only that, it's an 'all change' year as well, so every seat is up for grabs.

DH said he was surprised I didn't appear at the door! I couldn't be arsed really, as last time I tried to explain my issues with Labour they didn't want to hear them (GE).

I can't wait for them to knock on my door. Our Labour MP has been door knocking nearby apparently. Looking forward to it.

My DH is so laid-back he's virtually horizontal. Not a lot fazes him, but he'd have killed for a chance to give canvassing Labour bods a piece of his mind (and would probably have unleashed the delinquent GSD we're currently fostering).

Reeves's attacks on the economy put paid to the plan he had to expand his practice, amongst other things. For DH, it's personal.

Sarahconnor1 · 07/02/2026 16:50

I know a couple of Labour councillors, good people trying to do their best for the local community. When they aren't in canvassing mode, they are in absolute despair re the PLP. Obviously that's off record and off duty. So i have some sympathy for canvassers, though I'll still give them my thoughts because that's the only way my MP will take any notice
