Did anyone else who went to primary school in the mid-80s have to do PE in their vest and pants?

I was telling my colleagues who are in their twenties about it and they looked at me like this: 🙄

Did anyone else experience this? Or was my school slightly strange?

Yes! In primary school (Scotland) we had to do gym in our knickers if you forgot your gym shorts. Boys and girls in together. They would be horrified nowadays.

Yup and bare feet if you forgot your plimsolls 😂

Primary school in the late 80s, vest and pants if you forgot your kit.

Oh yes. In the classroom strip down to your vest and pants for music and movement. Or hanging off bars.

Started school in ‘84 and we wore PE kit. Late 70’s was pants and vest.

i started school in 84 and absolutely did not. Shorts and t- shirt. Uniform if you forgot it (or you ran home to get it!)

Yes in the 90s when forgot pe kit. I faked sickness for my parents to collect me to avoid the humiliation

Yep, late 80s, early 90s. I think just for gym indoors. High school was the grimmest gym knickers that cut off your circulation and a ridiculous skirt

Yes, but ours looked more elaborate than that, and no, we never used it!

Yes, if we forgot our PE kit, but not as a general rule I don’t think. Or did we? I’m doubting myself now 🤔

Yes we had navy blue PE knickers which we just tucked out vests into and often would be barefoot or wear the black slip on pumps. I can't recall what the boys wore though.

Yep! I remember having to do it in my vest and pants (I can still feel how cold I was!) and someone else’s plimsolls from lost property.

I wasn’t the only one; and this happened when you forgot your PE kit.

I started High School in 1981 and I had to wear a polo shirt and maroon knickers!

In my Catholic primary school , we had to do that if we forgot our PE kits. When I was older, I thought it was just a Catholic thing. Because you know, they have a creepy history...

Yep in the infants because they didn't know how to change on their own apparently.
This was in the early to late 90s when i was in primary school and even in the early 2000s when my little sisters and brothers were in school so I don't know when they stopped lol
But when my daughter started school in 2015 they weren't doing it then but they did allow her to wear her PE kit to school on PE days.

By Year 8 they'd finally seen sense and we got to wear cycling shorts

Yes! Mid 80s and if you forgot your kit, you did it in your normal pants and vest. We didn't wear uniform and PE kit was any shorts, tshirt and sandshoes (plimsoles).

Yes, pants and vests for everyone in primary years in the late 80’s. Naked showers in the 1990’s in secondary.

Yes pants and vest - I remember being so embarrassed on the days I forgot to wear my vest!
We had a PE kit in secondary school but had to strip naked afterwards while the PE teachers watched us all run through communal showers. I’d rather have worn my pants for PE. Horrendous.
I left school in the early 90’s and it was still going on.
