Did anyone else who went to primary school in the mid-80s have to do PE in their vest and pants?

I was telling my colleagues who are in their twenties about it and they looked at me like this: 🙄

Did anyone else experience this? Or was my school slightly strange?

yes our vest and navy gym knickers if you forgot those you had to gym in your Normal knickers then we had to line up in the corridor and all the lads would point and laugh at us it was very brutal in the 70s

CharlotteFlax · 26/01/2026 18:54

Yes, vest and knicks in infants. T-shirt and big navy gym knickers in juniors. "Normal" PE kit in high school (pleated skirt, airtex T-shirt). Am mid-40s.

I worked in a school in 91 and the kids did PE in pants and vests.

Andsoitbeganagain · 26/01/2026 19:03

Yes. No Pe kit til secondary school, that would have been 87/88.

envbeckyc · 26/01/2026 19:11

Yes in infants and juniors, at secondary school children who forgot their PE kit were sent to the lost property box!

By the time I started secondary school I did my own washing and ironing to make sure my feckless mother didn’t let me down like she did when I was younger!

It primary school there were many occasions when I did PE in care bear or my little pony underwear! It was absolutely humiliating!

spriggit · 26/01/2026 19:36

Yes in the juniors, and I vividly remember a male teacher telling us all it was so hot we should take our vests off and we did PE in just our pants! I look back in horror now!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/01/2026 19:57

In 80s we did PE in our uniform, full buttoned up shirt, pinafore and black shoes. We had no changing facilities and no one ever objected to it. I remember for a dance and gymnastics display we got thick navy knickers and vests, I suspect standard issue ones that are described here. Strange but no different to a leotard really and much cheaper. The PE in full uniform strikes me as stranger to be honest.

Mid 70's was the norm.

So true. Fire bell went in a gym lesson when I was 12 or so. School knickers and aertex shirt. Outside we went in February. Different world.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/01/2026 20:02

Yes, in infant school in the mid to late 80s.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 26/01/2026 20:05

Early Sixties. Junior School. Sane for all pupild

But it was so cold. My mother always made sure l wore to thick grey knickers on PE days.

BLESS😻

Foggytree · 26/01/2026 20:09

In the 70s yes. By the 80s I was in secondary and we got thick blue PE pants to go over our pants.
We also had pe skirts, but some girls always forgot them and went out in just the pe pants.

Blarn · 26/01/2026 20:10

Yes, in infant school in the 80s and 90s. Even outside on the playground! We wore shorts and a tshirt for sports day.

In our school it was called ‘the apparatus’, and we never used it! I think I remember us having one solitary PE lesson on the apparatus throughout school. It would just be there, tempting us during assembly, but out of reach.

Haha, word for word this was us too! We always wondered when we might get to use “the apparatus” again after our single solitary lesson. Sadly, it was not to be. Mind you, we did have to make up routines on it and perform them for the rest of the class the one time we used it. I wasn’t fond of that part!

cocog · 26/01/2026 20:19

I did 😞 my sister lost her pe kit and took mine I found it on her peg after the humiliating experience. She laughed all the way home.

Jllllllll · 26/01/2026 20:23

I’m 50 and yes it was perfectly normal then to do or (indoor) in vest and pants if you didn’t have your kit. Now as a teacher y2/3 upwards make an issue of changing together in the same room. We don’t generally do it as they come in in PE kits and wear them for the day but children’s bodies haven’t changed. Attitudes have changed. Not sure if that’s a positive or a negative really.

CherryVanillaPie · 26/01/2026 20:39

There used to be a perv on mumsnet who posted constantly about being made to do PE in bra and pants at secondary school, which is obviously a bit different from wearing underwear at Infant School and Aertex top and PE knickers worn over underwear at Secondary that many remember

2025mustbebetter · 26/01/2026 20:40

Yes in the 1980s. Don't remember ever having pe kit in infants. Only in juniors when we did more outside.

pouletvous · 26/01/2026 21:09

Only if we forgot our PE kit

There was always one kid in vest, pants and bare feet

pouletvous · 26/01/2026 21:11

Did all school halls have one of those pull put wooden frames that sat flat against the wall and never ever ever used?

sometimes we used a bench and a spring board or quoits and bean bags

pouletvous · 26/01/2026 21:11

I dont remember doing PE in the juniors. Only infants

MagicStarrz · 26/01/2026 21:13

I recall we did this in primary school (90s) if we forgot our PE kit or maybe it was just a threat.

pouletvous · 26/01/2026 21:17

remember this?

Did anyone else who went to primary school in the mid-80s have to do PE in their vest and pants?
Coconutter24 · 26/01/2026 21:18

I’m 38 and we did PE in vest and pants. Then we had T-shirt and shorts but if you forgot your kit up until year 6 we had to do it in vest and pants

123feraverto · 26/01/2026 21:20

Primary in the 90’s - ‘95/96 reception maybe year 1
if you don’t bring PE clothes knickers and vest was the alternative
