Did anyone else who went to primary school in the mid-80s have to do PE in their vest and pants?

I was telling my colleagues who are in their twenties about it and they looked at me like this: 🙄

Did anyone else experience this? Or was my school slightly strange?

In Lucy and Tom go to School by Shirley Hughes, which was published in the late 70s, the reception class is shown doing PE in their underclothes. As a Canadian child, I remember thinking it looked bizarre and very embarrassing!

My DCs school still use the fold away climbing frame and ropes!

In PE kit though 😂

In our school it was called ‘the apparatus’, and we never used it! I think I remember us having one solitary PE lesson on the apparatus throughout school. It would just be there, tempting us during assembly, but out of reach.

Yes, 1970s. I am instantly taken back by the Victoria Wood song about Music and Movement.

My church is temporarily meeting in the associated CofE school which I think is 90s or later - it still has those ropes.

No compulsory uniform - hardly anyone wore it though I do remember a few girls in grey pinafores.

Well they wouldn’t be able to do it these days because I don’t think any of my DGC actually wear a vest.

Central heating impact ?

Dollymylove · 26/01/2026 09:14

Infants school in the 60s, those scratchy off-white wooly vests and thick woolly knickers.
No recollection of what we wore in the juniors for PE

I always thought it wasn't surprising teen girls got put off sport when he had to do it in those hideous giant knickers!

We were supposed to wear navy blue giant knickers in secondary school (80s) but nobody did. Red for PE and you couldn't avoid those.
Edit: but with a PE skirt over them thank God.

niwtdaaam · 26/01/2026 09:14

80s: We had big brown knickers which you had to wear with your normal uniform. For gym you just wore them and an airtex shirt.

In the senior school you wore the big knickers.with a gym skirt and airtex shirt. For games on the field there was a sweatshirt too. It was often fucking freezing in winter!

In the first couple of years I was in senior school, late 80s, the school finally ditched the knickers and introduced tracksuit bottoms, much to everyone's relief. The gym skirt made an appearance again in the summers.

MrsKateColumbo · 26/01/2026 09:18

I finished y11 in 2002 and we had to wear gym knickers under our sports skirt. I think when I joined it had only just become knickers and skirt, early 90s was just the knickers.

Primary school im sure I wore PE Kit the whole way through

FuzzyWolf · 26/01/2026 09:20

It was standard in my school and shirt and knickers if no vest on.

JayJayj · 26/01/2026 09:22

Yes. I was born in 85 and if you forgot your PE kit you did it in pants and vest (for girls) pants for boys.

deste · 26/01/2026 09:22

Yes and walk along a main bus route to get to the playing fields.

TheCurious0range · 26/01/2026 09:23

Even at secondary we did. Some things were in t-shirts and PE knickers bright red ones! Gymnastics, athletics and dance for example. Even playing hockey, netball etc you wore them under your skirt so every time someone bent over you could see a bright red arse from miles away. I finished Y11 in 2000. This was a mixed sex state comp in east London.

Topseyt123 · 26/01/2026 09:24

I was at primary school in the early seventies and yes, we had this.

namechange272727 · 26/01/2026 09:24

Yes in the mid 90s, if you forgot your pe kit

Cryingatthegym · 26/01/2026 09:25

Yes in primary school in the early-mid 90s.

Secondary school had PE kit thank goodness!

user2848502016 · 26/01/2026 09:25

No, we had to take a PE kit with shorts and a t shirt and black plimsols!

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 26/01/2026 09:25

Just realised how bad this was, I started my periods age 10 in 1986 and the pads were thick back then. I genuinely can't remember if we had PE kit at primary, but definitely no normal uniform

HairsprayBabe · 26/01/2026 09:25

We did in reception, I was born in 1992 so it went on till at least 1996 round here, I suppose its no different to a dance or gymnastics leotard though, and much easier and faster to get children changed,

sesquipedalian · 26/01/2026 09:09

Well they wouldn’t be able to do it these days because I don’t think any of my DGC actually wear a vest.

Ds does at 7 and so do a lot of his class mates. We're in the south, I wonder if this is a northern thing like not wearing a coat even when it's freezing because you don't feel the cold.

APatternGrammar · 26/01/2026 09:26

Yes, in the 80s. It was the standard, not only if you forgot, we had no other PE clothes. Underwear wasn't any thicker that that sold today, though it's true that every child wore a vest, they weren't as thick as a t-shirt.

ComeSnowoOrSnow · 26/01/2026 09:27

Yes, remember having to wear knickers for pe in infant school but wasn’t phased.

i hated wearing the gym briefs in junior high school - like nasty slightly baggy granny pants!

TheWibble · 26/01/2026 09:27

We did in infants school 1989-1992. When we went into juniors they let us have some dignity along with t-shirt and shorts.

Yes - 1980’s, everyone, not just if you’d forgotten your kit! Our school had no uniform and no PE kit. It does seem weird now, my DC had endless outfits for different sports, a different kind of sock to lose for every sport…

There was also a fold away wooden climbing frame in the assembly hall, with ropes to climb! I used to like climbing to the top, but imagine that’d be a H and S nightmare now!

Yep, same here. Sometimes I forgot to wear a vest and just ran around in my pants! 😂

Loved the awesome wooden food away climbing frame and ropes! They called it the ‘apparatus’. “Emma and Sarah, please stop dangling from the apparatus!”

cinquanta · 26/01/2026 09:29

Yes, but they were bulletproof knickers.

IAmKerplunk · 26/01/2026 09:30

Yes - in the infants (early 80’s) and if you weren’t wearing a vest then you just wore your knickers! I remember running round the hall in just my knickers with my hands covering my nipples
