Just that. Interested to see if anyone says what I'm thinking...

Brussels. Fuck me. It put years on me.
also pendle - still lost for words.

CharlotteByrde · 25/01/2026 20:27

My enjoyment of English seaside towns and Scottish islands does tend to depend on the weather. Mull and Lewis beaches are glorious on a sunny day and I am pretty confident I could squeeze some enjoyment out of a sunny afternoon in Scarborough or Filey. But in the rain, it's more of a struggle.

Slough

😄

The mother in laws.

I found Reykjavik a bit underwhelming, but I thought the landscapes of Iceland were spectacular!

To do Reykjavik properly you have to go out to a bar at 1am, as that's when most of the locals come out (it's expensive, so they pre-drink with friends at home before that). We met so many great people who were happy to chat and have a beer with us while they explained Icelandic culture and weird things like all the locals having small noses (when you properly look, they do!). I could happily live there.

Notashamed13 · 25/01/2026 20:36

Actually, thinking about it, the motorbike museum at Gaydon was pretty shit too!

CathyorClaire · 25/01/2026 20:38

Sutton Hoo.

Seen one mound of grass, you've seen 'em all.

I should have been guided by the film which featured mud. A lot of mud.

ThePrecisionsifthisislove · 25/01/2026 20:43

Glenrothes ,we used to frequent years ago and would go to the bowling alley to kill time before the Nsoul niter .
I've never forgotten how utterly depressing it was

Would you mind elaborating? I am a Winter Woman and absolutely hate heat. I would choose Alaska, Canada, NYC in February etc etc. You'd think Iceland would be high on the list... but for some reason (nothing to do with expense) Iceland just doesn't grab me and I don't know why!

We loved Iceland! Interesting places to visit and Reykjavik is a great city. You just have to get over the price of everything!
Valencia is also a great place to visit- beach, park and city.

Farticus101 · 25/01/2026 20:48

Burnley (though not a holiday destination). I felt an unbelievable gloom there that didn't lift until I drove away from the place. The family friends we met there took us for a meal at a kind of department store - the kind where the mannequins have lost limbs and the clothes are the kind your nan has stored in the attic. I'm sure there must be something going for it, but I couldn't see what!

AgentPidge · 25/01/2026 20:49

Stuttgart. I had a couple of hours there between trains on a Sunday afternoon, and everything was closed. Then it started to rain. To be fair, that could apply to many places but overall, Germany has been the place I've disliked the most.

CyanMaker · 25/01/2026 20:50

A mountain resort that my friend and I thought was for "singles to mingle". It was filled with singles but they were all over 50 and we were early 20's. So very boring.

Ilikesundays · 25/01/2026 20:51

Bern after 9.00 pm. The whole city closes down.

Pistachiocake · 25/01/2026 20:52

Always think it's the people you're with, not the place.

Fellontheground · 25/01/2026 19:39

Really? The entire cape?

I was a young adult, I went there for a day trip with friends, no idea whereabouts. But, yeah, my impression was that it was really boring.

Cornwall. Closely followed by Devon.

Ha! I was going to say that!

Statsquestion2 · 25/01/2026 20:55

Yeah my problem with Iceland had nothing to do with prices 🤣🤣I did have a great Indian meal though.

Auburngal · 25/01/2026 20:56

On the school's German exchange, we went down this mine and it was boring. I remember having to wear these massive overcoats to enter it. The sleeves of these coats were baggy that reached waistband if held arm straight. Couldn't remember where it was. But exchange school was in Saarbrucken. Then visited Trier and Heidelberg - so that south westish corner of Germany

You don't find the Grand Place pretty? You don't find the Museum of Fine Art interesting? None of the museums? Nothing? Really?
So strange.

Grand Place is pretty enough. The Museum of Fine Arts’ permanent collection is ok but there are about 100 galleries which have better permanent collections, and as for the museums - again there are many better. Add to that the rather lacklustre atmosphere of Brussels and yes, I find it really boring. I love travelling and have been lucky enough to have travelled a lot, and Brussels is the only place I have been to that I would describe as dull and not worth visiting. I note many others on this thread agree too. That’s fine though, life itself would be dull if we weren’t all different and we all liked exactly the same things.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/01/2026 20:56

Blisterinthe · 25/01/2026 20:18

Pretty can be boring. Museum can be interesting but dead boring…

why is that so shocking to people?

I mean if you don't like museums, interesting architecture, quirky pubs, very old puppet theatres then yes, I suppose you would find Brussels boring, but the same would go for any big city with interesting architecture and museums.
Where DO you find interesting?

Mapletree1985 · 25/01/2026 20:57

Mont St Michel

Gwenhwyfar · 25/01/2026 20:57

Pistachiocake · 25/01/2026 20:52

Always think it's the people you're with, not the place.

Well, no. I've been to many places alone.

Ilikesundays · 25/01/2026 20:51

Bern after 9.00 pm. The whole city closes down.

it must have been a while since you visited because that's just not true. I say that as someone who goes there regularly.

Auburngal · 25/01/2026 20:58

It depends what you are looking for in a holiday. If you are one of those who loves to explore the area, read the history, then a beach holiday will bore you. I cannot think of anything else worse than an AI in the middle of nowhere where the food is just catered for the unadventurous Brits - everything with chips.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/01/2026 20:59

Snugs10 · 25/01/2026 18:31

I second that

I also can’t believe how utterly shit it is.
the decomposing coelacanth in the tank had black mould on it, the dehydrated turtle shells and stuff I’ve seen better washed up on the local shore, the plastic whale and dusty armadillo carcasses, unless I missed something, it was so dated and had an air of sadness and underfunding.
