I agree he should have been sacked rather than allowed to resign.

But I can’t help but wonder if this relates to the fact he resigns there’s no investigation? Stops the media hounding the investigation and he goes away - end of?

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2026 08:31

We all know how the media will portray it.

He was already sacked and put on leave.

I don’t think these men will be able to get away with avoiding giving evidence in the US for much longer. The man who used to be a prince and Mandelson may find their privilege no longer protects them. Hopefully.

Privilege or not the time that might be appropriate when the US starts routinely allowing deportation of their citizens to face police Investigation and possible trial in the UK.

Until then, just no, they can be investigated in the UK.

Apparently he called Boris Johnson just before resigning. Presumably to take advice on how to dodge consequences.

So much for the broadest shoulders.... my DD earns above avg wages as a Band 6, she owes more in loan now than when she left Uni 4 years ago.

The interest payments are a scam that would never be allowed by a Bank etc, Reeves et al will of course will be able pay off their kids loans, avoiding any interest.

Labour seem intent on being voted out in 2029.

Rachel Reeves is seen in closeup in a red top.

Rachel Reeves defends 'fair and reasonable' student loans system

The chancellor's defence comes after Martin Lewis called her freeze on student loans "not a moral thing".

Don't blame me. I marched against them in the 80s.

I heard Reeves on the radio asserting that degree courses shouldn’t be funded by taxpayers. In the case of healthcare professionals, whose training is entirely for the public good, I fundamentally disagree with her. I’d strongly favour their loans being interest free and written off completely after a specified period of NHS service. It might help stop the haemorrhage of expensively trained people out of the UK.

You see I believe the state should fund everyone to the maximum achievable potential they are capable of and wish to attain.Because it's an investment in the future, not a mortgage on it.

I wonder what the Greens take is ? I'm not beholden to any party, despite what the squirrels may say.

This would be the best way forward. I would like to see the same for teachers who stay in state schools.

But that would strike at the heart of the corruption that means the state pays for people to fuck off into the private sector. (And then whine endlessly on MN how they have to pay taxes).

Do you think any private healthcare flinger (e.g. BUPA) could survive a day if they had to pay for the training their staff get ?

ChatGPT seems to agree that we are close now to indentured service in Britain than at any time since the early 19th century. Is it right ? Of course. It's "AI". It can't be wrong.

MsJinks · 02/02/2026 10:54

The Daily Express has launched its campaign- ‘to give us a proper brexit’ - backed by Farage, Kemi, Boris, Smogg
and involving leaving ECHR, taking fishing waters back, slashing EU regulations- in response to Starmer’s ‘betrayal’
I hope to god it never happens any of the backers get in power but be interesting to see how they explain that they too won’t be delivering a ‘proper Brexit’

Absolutely agree. Education should be a right, not a privilege.
Student loans are an odd sort of debt though. I think that muddies the waters.

They'll need a lot of shovels to dig up enough people to win that vote.

The caveat is "to the level you can achieve". Not everyone can be a rocket scientist.

But if you can get the grades and show it's within your potential then I would be happy for my taxes to enable that.

That’s why I specified a qualifying period of NHS service.

I dunno Jane. Plenty of posters on MN seem to think leaving the ECHR is a good idea as in their narrow little minds it would "free us" from being "overwhelmed" by Muslims.

So the parties who don’t want to do that need to cooperate and really push the reality then. But Polanski won’t and even Davey seems to have hit an anti-Labour-whatever streak currently. Progressive parties really need to work together.

I agree, Cardi. I wish they would pay attention to the fact that most of us don't want a far-right government. If they all just continue to throw endless rocks, we are in danger of getting just that.

we are in danger of blaming Corbyn for his time as PM, if we aren't careful.

I agree with this but where would the line be drawn? teachers engineers lecturers... scientists, Police on graduate programs... plus many others could be seen as for the public good....

I feel sorry for HCP's their take home wages really are poor, car parking, student loan and high pension contributions... ok they get that back but it doesn't help pay the bills.
My DD has no issue working for say 10 years in the NHS in return for no student loan but there needs to be safety nets, not everyone is suitable for these roles and she wouldn't want poor HCPs to be forced to stay in the NHS... she has just failed a student on placement, they'll get another chance but in my DD she is just not suitable.

If pretty much all of Europe can fund Uni education, then we should be able to as well.

Yes to tuition fees but at around £3k pa and interest rates that reflect the simple fact that most graduates will earn more and hence pay more tax and NI, pay more into pensions, claim less benefits, if any & chances are, fund their own care in old age.

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2026 11:41

It seems especially poor when you consider the responsibility they are expected to carry.
