Trump’s text message to the Norwegian PM

TortoiseshellTabby · 19/01/2026 14:35

“Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America."

This is why he’s justified in taking Greenland - apparently. How is this giant man-child in charge of the free world?

Woke this morning to a nice derail of this thread...Hmm

Back on topic, Russia is, of course, absolutely thrilled at Trump's behaviour in blowing up NATO and picking a serious fight with European countries. They're publicly actively encouraging him.

'Europe is at a total loss': Russia gloats over Greenland tensions
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c17zpvkddpzo

"If Trump annexes Greenland by July 4 2026, when America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, he will go down in history as a figure who asserted the greatness of the United States," writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

So is China. They could not get a better result if Trump was a senior member of the CPC. Greenland if of no interest to China at all.

The only way we get out of this mess is if the American electorate chooses a better President.

A better President with way fewer powers. This means electing a better Congress. One with the balls to abolish gerrymandering and voter suppression. One that strives to improve the material conditions of ordinary Americans. They need to take the lanyards off and roll their sleeves up.

hohummm1 · 20/01/2026 10:16

u3ername · 20/01/2026 09:56

Honestly, I blame the citizens of the USA for sitting quietly after electing him. There must be legal ways for them to stop this madness. People in his party, democrats, lawyers, police, and just ordinary citizens. This is supposed to be a free, democratic country with many mechanisms in place to prevent totalitarianism. Are they really so apathetic to what is happening, so ignorant of the consequences, all so greedy? Millions and millions of people…

I'm sorry, but the only things that can currently stop him are Congress and the Supreme Court. Congress is controlled by his party and they're choosing not to. If their voters cared, they'd do an about face, but the fact is, they like it. And the SC has so far chosen not to and don't really have any mechanism to enforce their decisions anyway.

The rest of us are unwilling passengers on this runaway train. We can protest, campaign for better candidates, vote in every election from school boards to presidents, donate to candidates, but that's it. That's all the power we have. This is squarely on the elected Republicans and the people who voted for this and I no longer have any sympathy for any of them.

I don't care if the dems had put up a trans 3-legged goldendoodle, it was clear from the beginning it would have done a better job than this crew.

Pepsi4Eva · 20/01/2026 14:32

Agree. I have a good friend who lives and works in Washington DC with his family. He's distraught about it all. Not just angry, but utterly devastated and ashamed. He's a hair breadth from rioting. We are talking about late middle-aged professional with alot to lose if he does.

I remember when the last election was lost to Biden and he said 'If I lose this election you will never see me again'. And he lied. He didn't go anywhere.

It's because of the little known clause in the US constitution where if you assert more than 10 gazillion times that an election was rigged or stolen you get take-it-backsies on anything you said before, so it doesn't count as a lie. The founders thought of everything.

hohummm1 · 20/01/2026 15:19

ThatCyanCat · 19/01/2026 22:56

Women have been attacked in American prisons by men who were put there claiming to be women and even had their sentences extended for saying men aren't women. That's just one way this ideology harms women. Losing their opportunities to fair sport is another: perhaps Riley should just be glad she wasn't a boxer so a man who everyone said was a woman couldn't break her skull.

If transgenderism was indeed a driving force behind the election results, as you seem to be suggesting it was (personally I don't know) then you'd think any party that gave a shit would realise it could end this harmful insanity AND retain the rights women did still have. But apparently not.

If women are erased in law, every other right becomes threatened. You can't devise women's rights when you can't define a woman. You can corrupt figures relating to women's needs and representation when men count as women, though.

You're telling us women should give up their rights to keep Trump out, but not that anyone should have upheld their rights to keep him out. Why do you think it's so important women should lose rights, but not so important that they should keep them? You seem to be tacitly suggesting that you think the Dems could have won if they'd not embraced this, so why the hell do you not think they should have rejected it, won the election and then improved the state of women's rights all round? It makes no sense.

Although as a PP said, the Dems lied about other stuff too and I'm not sure how much this one issue interested the average US voter.

What rights do you think women were going to lose under Harris? Show me the policies.

I can tell you one thing. If you sat a group of 100 random American women in a room and asked how many have been personally negatively affected by a trans person and then you asked how many have been personally negatively affected by not being able to access and/or afford healthcare, I know which group would have more raised hands.

So it's all very well to be theoretical. But in real life, in the real world, more women and children are suffering under this administration than they would have under a Harris administration.

And that's without even looking outside the US at USAID...

And of course, the Founding Fathers never thought there would ever be a POTUS a million times better than all of them combined. stronger, faster, smarter. He can rebuild America. He has the technology.

I think that is why he sent out 60 invites at 1 billion a pop for his "Gaza team".

The 60 billion dollah man.

I believe his focus is on using the presidency to become one of the richest men on the planet. Musk is on his way to become the first trillionaire, and Trump doesn't want to be left behind. So grift, grift, and grift some more. He's already got all the oil money out of Venezuela going to his personal account in Qatar. Neither the USA nor Venezuela has seen a dime of it. He says he will "eventually" give it back.

FlyingCatGirl · 20/01/2026 16:00

What gets me is that I saw Nigel Farage being a Trump supporter club on his Facebook page and Farages supporters worshipping him and Trump but to say that these people are vehemently about "Great Britain" and "Sovereignty" etc, they seem to not realise that Trump is throwing his weight around towards countries that have US military bases in them, how long before he wants to take the UK and make it American! Look at the unhealthy interest Musk had in all our affairs when he was Trumps bestie! Trump may already have us in his crosshairs for future occupation!

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2026 16:13

Icecreamisthebest · 19/01/2026 18:45

Trump wants a war so that the midterm elections this year do not go ahead. Everything he is doing is inflammatory do that either ge gets more resources (and keeps the profits for himself) or someone stands up to him and he gets the war he wants and can declare all elections cancelled until there is peace.

Someone is behind this. That text is nothing like his usual tone or style of writing. I believe it was written for him. Someone is prepared to stop at nothing to prevent the mid terms going ahead. There will be more and more of this behaviour until someone snaps and attempts to take him on. I’m sure the no elections announcement is drafted and ready to go.

The collateral damage means nothing to him and his cronies

Edited

I think it's Putin. Not joking.

Walkaround · 20/01/2026 16:36

It’s not Putin per se, it’s that the people currently in control of the US are of the same mindset about how the world should be run, so obviously use the same playbook.

What gets me is that so many US citizens from Hispanic communities voted for Trump. Of all people, surely someone whose family moved to the US from Latin America should understand only too well the harms that can be caused by dictatorial psychopaths being in charge of countries, as Latin America has had more than its fair share of them. Why on earth move to the US and then vote for the same shit there? Yes, of course mad dictators get things done, but it does not take a genius to understand they do not do what is good for the people, they only do what they think is good for them. Trump never even tried to hide his dictatorial ambitions.

Musk still has an unhealthy interest in our affairs - just uses Tiny Tom to get them out there now, and obviously X. I’m not sure what he wants from it - maybe just disruption.

Are ordinary Americans taking to the street over this though?
They seem very quiet to me, like they don't care.

Most mumsnetters will be nodding in agreement because they follow mainstream news. As much as Trump is an odious man, a terrible example of a statesman, the things that are happening in USA under his instruction is mind blowing. He is exposing massive (and I mean huge) corruption, in the billions upon billions. He’s getting criminals removed, he’s shut the border, Dr’s are praising him because instead of 10 deaths a day from Fentanyl overdoses, they are reduced to two a day.
Trump has been doing good things behind the scenes for 20/30 years, but
you won’t find any of this on the mainstream news.
also the Kennedy looking after health, is doing more than anyone to stop big pharma, and to stop food company’s from poisoning, and pushing UPF’s.
if you don’t believe this, a Google search should do it.

Just seen what he's said today. Oh surely he needs to go . He's not balanced. There must be mechanisms by which US system can get rid of him. You cant have a leader of the free world as wobbly as that. Surely !!

He is extremely dangerous and is about to do with Greenland what Putin did with Ukraine. He is a meglamaniac who adds tariffs because other countries don't agree with his policies on taking over a Nato Country that does not need any interference, they are running quite well on their own without the USA moving in and taking what they want and putting in their own rules to benefit US. WTF.

Putin is many things, but he's not a psychopath or a megalomaniac. He is basically doing no more than what most other Russian leaders have always done.

I beg to differ. Putin is definitely a psychopath. He’s not exactly the only leader in history to be a psychopath, within Russia or without.

Fair enough, I tend to avoid the news these days to be honest, it's better for my blood pressure when I keep away from it.
