Anyone else not “get” Yom Daley’s knitting?

CreamEggsForever · 18/01/2026 12:23

Now, I can barely knit a stitch so he is way better than me, much more talented and creative.

But I’ve just seen a reel where he showed jumpers he knitted for his sons’ school photo - they looked baggy and saggy and not appealing at all to me.

Sorry Tom, but am I the philistine here? Entirely possible, as my fashion sense is worse than my knitting!

Yes the whole's "the first man that ever knitted anything" standing ovation is very tiresome when there are literally millions of women (and no doubt men - I just don't know any so cannot verify) who are more talented and far more charming.
I mean bless Tom for trying but it's all wearing very thin now isn't it?

Oh isn’t he so wonderful.

No.

I don’t understand the appeal of Tom Daley at all. I can’t bear him. And yes it’s so incredibly annoying when men are praised for doing something that’s almost completely ignored when women do it.

wonderpetsrus · 18/01/2026 12:32

He is not a great knitter. Unlike Kaffe Fassett who very much was

He is insufferable. Professional gay quota and he and his partner paid for the use of a woman’s body to procure a baby.
The days of being a national treasure for his diving are long gone.

LlynTegid · 18/01/2026 12:32

Whilst I think away from sport he is cringeworthy, if his show encourages knitting in general, that is no bad thing.

Sirzy · 18/01/2026 12:33

My mum is a very talented knitter and has said the same. His items have no shape and all seem to be done is super chunky wools.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 18/01/2026 12:34

He's also the first man in the world to have a baby and him and his husband have a very very special love, more special than anyone else's.... it's all very cringy to me.

His husband Dustin Lance Black was 36 when he met 17 year old Tom, which isn't ever mentioned because no one can say a word without being accused of being a bigot.

Lance Black seems like a very unpleasant man: www.mylondon.news/news/west-london-news/tom-daleys-oscar-winning-husband-28068624

Yes, and the BBC made a whole podcast to tell us all hoe great this is for men, buying babies, mothers rarely mentioned: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p06tn77s

I was so excited about that knitting show, then saw he was presenting it 😡
I refuse to watch it.
There are some absolutely amazing knitting designers around, male and female, some brilliant personalities that would have brought so much to the show.

Instead we get a man that used to dive and buys babies. Urgh.

Oh, and his knitting is terrible.

333FionaG · 18/01/2026 12:49

I have never like the man, although he was a superb diver. His relationship with the much older man, which began when Tom was a teenager, makes me uncomfortable. Philip Schofield was annihilated for a similar age gap relationship, why do Tom and Dustin get a free pass? There was also a story in the press about the pair of them making derogatory remarks about restaurant staff when they were asked to move their baby's pram.
As for his knitting, big wow. Plenty of men knit and they are not complete tossers like Tom Daley.

Buscobel · 18/01/2026 12:49

His knitting is shapeless, has poor tension and looks amateurish, in my opinion. Amateurish is fine, I suppose most knitters are amateurs, but not great when you’re setting yourself up as a professional.

The knitting programme was the same. They were being asked to make ridiculous things. The Bake Off/Sewing Bee/Pottery Throwdown format didn’t work. I gave up after a couple of programmes.

I don’t have any particular opinion about Tom Daley, but I think if you are attempting to mentor and advise, you should be competent. Patrick and Esme, Keith Brymer Jones, Paul and Pru, all have the credentials to do that. Tom doesn’t.

CreamEggsForever · 18/01/2026 14:57

I didn’t know the terminology like lacks tension and shapeless, but yes!!!!

He's a man and he can hold a pair of knitting needles. Whoop Whoop.

Baggy and saggy is a great description for what he does, if one of the women divers knit like that she wouldn't get a second glance.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/01/2026 15:14

I can knit anything. He’s crap.

Id like to see some complex 2ply heirloom baby shawls from him. Then I’d think he could knit😊

Or something with complex colour work and loads of cables in a delicate yarn.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 18/01/2026 15:24

I'm not a fan of his or his groomer husband. As others say, his knitting is amateurish at best and there are thousands of more talented knitters of both sexes out there. They just haven't got his high profile.

Yep. He and his husband are awful.

Tom is also happy for men to be in women’s sports so he can fuck right off. Dickhead. He knew what a woman was when he needed their eggs and womb. 😡

VaddaABeetch · 18/01/2026 15:54

the man who bought a baby? Stunning & brave. & he can knit. Amazing

SirChenjins · 18/01/2026 15:57

The power of the gays, innit. I agree with all the points upthread - I switch him off whenever he appears.

helplessbanana · 18/01/2026 16:00

What amazes me is that he thinks that anyone could possibly give a shit.

Bit like Stephen Fry when he met his very young boyfriend now husband. Pedastry all over Fry’s past, not hidden. But never mentioned now.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 18/01/2026 16:02

I love Bake Off/Throw Down and all the other shows of that format, so was interested to watch the knitting one. I know nothing about knitting but thought it would be fun to watch (I’ve never forged a knife or blown glass either but I watch those and enjoy them all!)

This one was dull as shit and TD is so annoying. It just seemed like a vehicle for him to flounce about in a saggy jumper, making stupid puns. I gave up after the first episode. Even without him ruining it, I just don’t think knitting has the same potential for dramatic fails as some of the other crafts, so it really needed a bit more than just a bunch of people sitting around knitting!

Like the little turd Owen Jones. Who thinks trans women (men) are women. Until he wants to rent / buy a womb.

gruit · 18/01/2026 16:04

he had such an arrogance about him on celebrity traitors recently didn’t he?
