Anyone else not “get” Yom Daley’s knitting?

Now, I can barely knit a stitch so he is way better than me, much more talented and creative.

But I’ve just seen a reel where he showed jumpers he knitted for his sons’ school photo - they looked baggy and saggy and not appealing at all to me.

Sorry Tom, but am I the philistine here? Entirely possible, as my fashion sense is worse than my knitting!

I’d love to see that, especially the cable in delicate yarn. I have fantasised about being a brilliant knitter but haven’t got further than buying some needles and one pack of yarn (about five year’s ago, sigh).

I love watching my Mum knit, she can do the most complex patterns while having a conversation and watching TV!

she tried to teach me but sadly I didn’t inherit any of her ability.

Those sweaters sound woke to me!

This made me giggle 😂

henlake7 · 18/01/2026 17:17

well, Im impressed! He is a hell of alot better at knitting then I am (I cant do anything creative).
So what if he is abit cringey and woke, he's obviously a happy little chap so more power to him.
(also I kinda like his knitting....but then I am a fan of schlumpy fits and mad colours!!LOL).

It’s just practice!

I totally understand Daley's knitting. It's just not very good. Big needles chunky yarn and apparently no attention to tension.
Both of my grandfathers knitted. One was merchant seaman all his life and the other in the RN in the second world war. The royal navy grandpa knitted baby bootees for me when I was born and then a Christening shawl, both in baby weight yarn. I still have the shawl 45 years later although the bootees got lost. It wasn't a big deal, it's just what they could do. The merchant navy grandpa died before I was born, he was an expert at darning but would only do it at sea

He wore a jumper (presumably which he made) on Traitors Uncloaked which said "Don't hurt me" with the "don't" crossed out, found that a bit creepy

Fingalscave · 18/01/2026 17:36

I don't like TD anywhere near as much as he loves himself and I don't like his knitting and crochet. His garments look lumpy and badly made. In some parts of the country men traditionally knitted so he's not the first man to knit! I worked with a man who knits as a hobby, he is a brilliant, neat knitter and his fair isle and arran jumpers are beautiful.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/01/2026 17:37

Seeing as a lot of teenage boys with particularly West African heritage see nothing wrong with knitting, sewing and crochet, as per my school club that was almost entirely attended by them compared to the 'expected' girls, could they not have found a man of similar background to present it, rather than imply/reinforce the stereotype of it being women and gay white men that have anything to do with textiles?

He is not a great knitter. Unlike Kaffe Fassett who very much was

I've got some books of knitting patterns designed , and excecuted , by Kaffe Fassett. They are absolutely gorgeous.

I'm older generatiion and my brother, along with all his contemporaries male and female, was taught how to knit in primary school And my father who served in the navy during ww2 used to talk about how knitting was a common pastime amongst the serving mariners.
So all the hype about Tom Daley doesnt impress me at all.

shhblackbag · 18/01/2026 17:46

A man doing something women have done forever is amazing, don't you know?

I havent watched TDs programme and my knitting is very limited.
But both me and my sibling always wanted my dad to knit our school jumpers because they would be better and finished on time for school term than mums. (Having a shop bought school jumper was not an option!)

Thank you so much for explaining that to me & telling me how I should feel.

You're welcome!

Deep envy over your mum’s abilities. I’m more like you. I did take up crochet last year but struggled with that 😭

😬 a bit tmi there Tom.

Dgll · 18/01/2026 18:29

He is rather annoying. I'm sure he was voted off Traitors very early because the others found him irritating. They all said it was because he was 'too clever' but surely they could have come up with something that wasn't quite so obviously untrue.

Pricelessadvice · 18/01/2026 18:36

TenuousTed · 18/01/2026 12:30

I don’t understand the appeal of Tom Daley at all. I can’t bear him. And yes it’s so incredibly annoying when men are praised for doing something that’s almost completely ignored when women do it.

Me neither. He strikes me as a very irritating and a bit “look at me”.
I can’t help think nobody would be interested in him if he wasn’t gay.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 18/01/2026 18:40

I love knitting and had thought 'Wouldn't it be great if there were a knitting competition show!'. Then there was and I saw who was presenting it. I didn't bother watching, and based on what I've read about it, I definitely won't! Sounds like it's just a vehicle for TD to bounce around and show off. Yawn!

RaininSummer · 18/01/2026 19:05

He is a very amateur knitter and a very annoying, though pretty, young man. Irritating that he gets picked for the show when there are a million + better knitters out there.

This nails my opinion perfectly.

Beaverbridge · 18/01/2026 19:15

I thought it was just me who found him tiresome to say the least but I can see from this thread I'm not. There's just something off about him.

selondy · 18/01/2026 21:52

I’ve met him and his husband several times through work and found them both to be absolutely lovely. Genuinely nice to everyone they came across and not starry or showy. I don’t know about Tom’s knitting but I can’t find fault in my experience of dealing with either of them.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 18/01/2026 22:18

My grandad, who learned to knit whilst recuperating from a shell injury in ww1 and used to knit his own socks, wouldn't be impressed.

Nutmuncher · 18/01/2026 22:21

The vipers are out in force on this one. Wow.

SirChenjins · 18/01/2026 22:22

Vipers? No, just pointing out a few facts.

TheUsualChaos · 18/01/2026 22:25

He's a man who knits therefore > any knitting a woman has done. Ever.
