Anyone else not “get” Yom Daley’s knitting?

Now, I can barely knit a stitch so he is way better than me, much more talented and creative.

But I’ve just seen a reel where he showed jumpers he knitted for his sons’ school photo - they looked baggy and saggy and not appealing at all to me.

Sorry Tom, but am I the philistine here? Entirely possible, as my fashion sense is worse than my knitting!

Yeah. He’s toxic.

Man undertakes hobby usually done by women and everyone falls over themselves.

I remember years ago seeing footage of women in fair isle knitting the most complex patterns while not even looking at their needles. But none of them get told how amazing they are. I don’t mind TD himself but I do mind being told how amazing he is for doing something that women have done without much praise for decades.

He's a terrible knitter and a terrible person for buying babies and not even acknowledging the women he used. Absolute poster boy for the Glass Elevator. All round disgusting arsehole.

Crinkle77 · 18/01/2026 16:17

You don't have to 'get' anything. If you don't like his knitting or his tv programme you don't need to watch. Some people do, some people don't. You don't need to get so worked up about it.

Tulcan · 18/01/2026 16:20

It really gets on my nerves how he’s taken over knitting like he invented it and nobody else has ever knitted anything. He reminds me of those men who ‘babysit’ their own children or make a pasta meal on a work night but use every single pan in the house. Performance.

He’s in the audience watching diving, knitting with massive needles. He’s being interviewed about The Traitors with a wall of balls of wool behind him.

I don’t understand the appeal of Tom Daley at all. I can’t bear him. And yes it’s so incredibly annoying when men are praised for doing something that’s almost completely ignored when women do it.

This.

Its all very much - “Right - the diving career is over so channel 4 needs to find some kind of platform for this man bc he’s gay and a national treasure (in that this phrase is used for any Tom, dick & Harry these days) - right what’s he up to? Oh, you’re into knitting atm are you Tom? Great! Right let’s set up a pottery-throw-down-type programme for him to head then - it’ll be a sure fire hit”. Box ticked.

All the while there are thousands of talented women out there who would never get this opportunity.

And yes, his “creations” are shit.

🤮

Thank you so much for explaining that to me & telling me how I should feel.

Oh yes, and the buying babies thing too.

But that’s not true. If there is a programme commissioned about knitting, then you want someone who knows about it talking about it. Someone else should have got that job.

When Tom Daley wanted to represent Great Britain for diving, they didn’t send Phillip Scofield instead.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 18/01/2026 16:28

I have to agree with others here. Why oh why is it such a big deal when a man does something that women do far better?

He’s just an attention seeking knitting bore. 🙄

My granddad was a boy soldier in WW1 and ended up in the trenches. He was an ace knitter. So men knitting is no new thing. He knitted socks for himself and for his comrades. Consequently, he was never short of tobacco or chocolate. Thankfully, he survived unscathed.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 18/01/2026 16:30

His knitting is bad. (I knit a lot. Mine is better.)

DisforDarkChocolate · 18/01/2026 16:31

My Mum was an amazing knitter, I look at the shit Tom makes and laugh. He's not got any better in the last 5 years. Shape up Tom, do something complex!

His kids are going to take the piss out of the crap they wore when they get older.

I can knit anything. He’s crap.

Id like to see some complex 2ply heirloom baby shawls from him. Then I’d think he could knit😊

Or something with complex colour work and loads of cables in a delicate yarn.

Edited

I can knit anything too and I agree conometely. He's a tosser.

I’ve often wondered amidst all the fuss about TD being a knitter of people had forgotten that servicemen had knitted as a pastime for a very very long time. My own uncle was in the Royal Navy and was a fabulous knitter.

Your grandad deserved all the chocolate he got. I think it was called 5 Boys.

I’d love to see that, especially the cable in delicate yarn. I have fantasised about being a brilliant knitter but haven’t got further than buying some needles and one pack of yarn (about five year’s ago, sigh).

Professionally gay. Thinks than biological men can, in fact, be 100% women.....until, you know, he needs to hire an actual biological woman's womb.

Fuck off you tiresome twat.

Thank you so much for that link. It brought tears to my eye thinking of all that’s being lost and nobody even knows.
