A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Ooh, they're beauties @DandyDandylion. The Toblerone one must be quite old, can't say I've ever seen a Toblerone mug. What a lovely thing to have a teeny caravan to sit in.

Sorry to hear about your horse, hopefully the ponies bring you lots of joy!

Blorengia · 01/02/2026 11:06

I feel like it's been raining almost continuously since beginning of November. BLEUGH.
I don't get them often but I have a cold/cough.
I've been looking at the forecasts to try and find a brighter day when we could go and visit some place with lots of snowdrops but it's constantly wet. (SE Wales)
At least I have some in the garden...

The toilet seat in the ensuite broke and the soft-closing lid slammed down. I decided that DH can deal with it. I find that I forget to ease it down and it slams or I try and ease down the lid in the downstairs loo.

The new seat arrived two days ago and he left it in the bedroom for me to deal with. So I said I had a lot on with the broken recliner sofa (independent expert says it's structural and Sociology's expert should say that. He's coming on the 10th. If he doesn't a full report from the expert is £350 plus travel plus VAT).

DH is now changing the seat and I'm glad I made him because it has different fixings to the previous one, even though we ordered the exact same seat. Anyway he can deal with all of it.

DanaScullysLegoHair · 01/02/2026 12:15

They're beautiful @Blorengia, hope you feel better soon AND the rain eases up.

@MyrtleLion I don't blame you for leaving the seat to DH, they're fiddly things that should be a lot more straightforward than they usually are!

Made a fruit platter today for a minor festival today. Also managed to get out for a short walk to the hardware store to get a parcel, did not need my jacket, it was about 25c! The weather has been very strange this winter.

all the mugs reminds me of DHs mug, which is a pg tips one, when you could get your initials put on them in some promo. It’s slowly cracking and I’m strangely sad about it.

Love that fruit platter Ella I am going to steal that idea. You can’t be in the uk if it’s 25, we can only dream of summer days ahead. It reminds me of the raw veg platters I used to make when mine were tiny. It was always the first thing I did when I started making dinner. I would put it on the coffee table and it stopped them nagging me about what/when dinner would be.

Not in the UK now, but I was born in Manchester, so well appreciate warm days!
We also have the pre-dinner “I’m huuuuungry” complaints 😄

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/02/2026 21:11

I have had two somewhat unsatisfying iced lattes today. For some reason the milk won't hold its foam. It takes longer to foam then dissipates quickly. It happens when the milk frother is low on charge and doesn't spin as fast, but it also seems to happen with a particular brand of lactose-free milk. I don't have this issue with Lactania or Natrel milk, but almost always with Dairyland. So, bummer. And, to boot, I just spilled my coffee down the front of my top. 😭

It's raining and 9c here. 🌧️☔️

Morning everyone,

I have taken a screenshot of the very dull, brown mug on its way to me 🙂

This makes me sad for my lost childhood.
I so wish i still had this cup... But my actual one of that makes sense

ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 · 01/02/2026 22:54

Iv just had a takeaway... Chicken kebab and chips..

Done some laundry. Its been raining all day here

Watched 'Ant & Dec Limitless win' and now watching 'The dog house'

Rock and roll life over here

MyrtleLion · 01/02/2026 23:47

The toilet seat needs a new plastic thingummy to.sit in the hole so.that the screw can sit in that and be tightened. DH will fix it soon. Till then the seat moves about a bit.

But it closes so softly...

MissConductUS · 02/02/2026 01:40

So, you need to replace the toilet hinge bolt assembly, and the seat has the posh “slow close” feature.

Don’t ask me how I know this. 😉

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/02/2026 07:55

Day was salvaged by taking dc for sushi (well, California rolls, but, hey, they're 2&4 😁) and Havoc is almost able to use chopsticks, but is quite good already! Baby just grabs a piece and shoves it in while I watch, ready to perform CPR. 😬
We went for cake after sushi then the Harry Potter Experience again. It was closing night, tickets were a bargain, the rain held off and they were giving away s'mores packs. So, the kids had their first experience actually roasting marshmallows as there was a fire area (propane) to do so. 😋

We had nice weather here on Saturday so we did 3 hours of gardening and got more hedgehog and squirrel path laid. Snowdrops are out and lots of bulbs coming through. Love the snowdrop pic @Blorengia

Got living room curtains washed and back up on Sunday and had a nice steak pie, with kalettes, kalibos cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Just had wendsleydale cheese, dragonfruit and walnuts.

Roasting marshmellows sounds wonderful @Mumtobabyhavoc

DandyDandylion · 02/02/2026 19:06

Mytrle there is nothing as satisfying as when a household object works perfectly. We didn’t have soft close lids growing up but would hate to be without them now.

Havoc is far better than I will ever be with chopsticks, fortunately here there is always the option of normal cutlery. We once bought a posh s’mores kit that can with a small oil based candle to toast the marshmallows. We still have it though the s’mores are long gone. We bring it out every Christmas and I buy a packet of chocolate biscuits and a packet of marshmallows. It will eventually run out but I don’t see why you couldn’t toast them over a candle? We also love putting little pots of white, milk and dark chocolate chips in a bain Marie (aka roasting tray filled with hot water) and having small thing to dip in. Most fruit works but chocolate brownie bites are my favourite. Obviously you would take them out of the hot water with such little ones.

All this talk of snowdrops makes me want to get out to a national trust place at the weekend. I love to see those grand gardens with blankets of snowdrops, just don’t quite have the motivation to make my garden as beautiful.

Absolutely, I completely understand. It would be like having the same teddy bear but not your actual teddy bear. Just not the same.

Gosh @EllaDisenchanted that fruit platter looks so tempting. I should eat more fruit. I tend to eat one fruit at a time. Yesterday it was cherries and I still have some left for today. We are from near Manchester and my bilingual grandsons in Lisbon have northern accents, which makes me laugh.

My DD washed me hair for me today, the first time it’s been washed for 2 weeks. I’ve been using shower caps that have shampoo and conditioner in that are used in hospitals. They worked quite well but I just wanted to feel the water on me. The first thing she said to me was, “Are you going anywhere nice.” We both started laughing and the water was going everywhere, which made us laugh more. Our hairdresser is coming tomorrow, thank goodness, as he’s not been since before Christmas. He’s been our hairdresser since we moved here, and he’s cut the hair of three generations of the family.

That is a lovely sized mug @DanaScullysLegoHair. So satisfying when you find something that reminds you of happy times. Did you find some Nordic Noir to watch? I’m always on the lookout for some of that. I enjoy French series as well. I’ve been watching Judge Marianne on Walter Presents. It’s a crime series, but funny as well.

@DandyDandylion I’ve never seen a toblerone mug before. Very unusual. My quiet time of day is opposite to yours. I’m up late at night and I have programmes on television that I watch on my own.

@Mumtobabyhavoc lovely seeing first things through children’s eyes. 1st party is lovely.

@MrsSPenguins I’ve never heard of kalettes or kalibos cabbage. I’m very intrigued and I’ve just started ordering online from Sainsbury’s. I’m going to put them on my next order. They sound delicious and I’m getting a bit fed up of the ordinary vegetables.

MrsSPenguins · 02/02/2026 20:54

@Umanresources We have a farm we get fruit and veg from - its seasonal so there's not much fruit at the moment, only apples so we get fruit elsewhere at the moment. Vegetables they have a lot of unusual ones - this week we got starry night squash, have never had that before but roasted in cubes for c 30 mins it was lovely and slightly sweet. We also had kalettes which I have never heard of before it says they are a cross between kale and brussels sprouts so I wasn't sure I would like them as don't like kale but they taste more like a cross between cabbage and brussels sprouts and are a similar size to sprouts. The kalibos cabbage just tastes like cabbage but it changes colour to inbetween purple and green on cooking. We are having roasted kalettes, roasted squash, roquefort and walnuts as a salad for dinner. DS will eat every fruit under the sun but he's very wary of different veg so will only eat things like peas, mange tout, green beans, baked beans, carrots, peas, broccoli.

MrsSPenguins · 02/02/2026 21:07

The kalettes went well with roast dinner and steak pie. Just had them roasted and they taste a bit like the seaweed you get from the Chinese minus the sugar. We are still experimenting with what we can have things with - the blue cheese didn't work with kalettes and squash but the salad we had the other day with roast chicken, roasted squash, mixed leaves, walnuts and parmesan was very nice.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/02/2026 21:33

Loving the chat about kalettes! When I've mentioned cooking with baby kale, that's what I meant, although not quite correct.
I trim them a bit and toss into soup or sauté and add pasta or chop and use on pizza. I also chop and add to salad. Kalettes info

Was going to take DC out downtown this afternoon on e home from school and lunch was done, but Havoc didn't want to and baby is napping. It's fine with me since it's still raining and I've got things to do, ie reg Havoc for school in the fall. 😭

Kalettes and that cabbage are new to me too penguins. We are somewhat limited to what is in season here and the avocadoes and strawberries are currently in season 😋. Made a lovely avocado salad for lunch today :)
Havoc I’m impressed by the chopstick handling- I simply can’t do it. My brother has tried and tried to teach me but alas I have zero skill 😄

miss you need to come teach me how to sort the toilet seat, ours doesn’t so much as move slightly as relocate itself entirely 😆

uman I’ve never heard of shower caps with shampoo in, that’s ingenious! Still nothing beats a proper wash; must have felt amazing!

I had an unexpected cancellation from work so I did some more of my journal and got the exciting news that one of my parcels with journal supplies from the beginning of December has finally cleared customs 😊

Umanresources · 02/02/2026 23:03

Ella the shower caps are in a pouch and can be warmed in the microwave. I just put mine on the radiator, until it was warmed through. You just put it on, massage it into your head, remove the cap and towel dry your hair. You can then blow dry and style as usual, no need to rinse. I also got foam body wash that you put on with a mitten and dry with a towel. It’s far easier than having a sponge bath, with water dripping everywhere, plus it smells lovely and leaves skin soft (I just turned into one of those annoying advertisements).😂 I bought children’s chopsticks for my grandsons when they were small. They have now graduated to ordinary chopsticks and in fact, my Dd bought us all chopsticks with our names on them for Christmas.

@MrsSPenguins i just checked and Sainsbury’s don’t have kalettes, but Ocado does, so I’m putting it in my basket. When you said it tasted like the Chinese seaweed, you had me, I love that.

@DandyDandylion We’ve never had s’mores, but I’d love to try them. They always seem to be very American. Now I want to look for a kit. You can buy so many things from different countries online nowadays, I bought Japanese Kit Kats when the boys were here in summer. They were very unusual flavours and the boys had a great time, wearing blindfolds and trying to guess what they were.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I’ve had a look at the recipes given for the kalettes. Oh my goodness, I really want to try kalettes in blankets and there are some delicious looking sprouts and green beans recipes.

@Umanresources I get these come up for Sainsbury's https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-flower-sprouts-160g
and it says kalettes on the packet. We roasted them for 15 minutes today and they were crispy and it reminded me of the Chinese seaweed but without the sugar. With a Sunday roast it was similar to cabbage / sprouts but I liked how they looked too.

Thanks for the recipes @Mumtobabyhavoc

Avocados and strawberries are lovely @EllaDisenchanted

I have just watched Quiz on Netflix about the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire £1 million cheating. I have had 2 jam doughnuts. I have ordered 3 more solar dandelions for the garden and a metal dustpan and brush which arrive tomorrow. We have 2 solar dandelions already.
