A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Hope you got your finnan haddie @Umanresources We had more cullen skink last night with bread and butter and I had the last of it for my lunch with more bread and butter.

Did another day's gardening at the weekend and I was clearing an area round the house and was very popular with the silkies, two of them were singing and the third was cuddling my leg.

We are having the firm that makes sheds/summerhouses/garden offices round to quote and measure next week for one to suit DS. It'll probably be next year as we need planning and listed buildings consent and they have to make it but think we know what one now. DH was working on his classic car yesterday.

Umanresources · 05/05/2026 17:37

Not got my finnan haddie yet, but I’m going to put it on my shopping list. I think it might be smoked haddock fishcakes with Anya potatoes (cheating on my Jersey Royals) tonight.

I’ve just downloaded Rich holiday, Poor holiday, because it’s set in Lisbon and I want to see if they are going to show anywhere I’ve been, when I’ve been visiting my son and family who live there.

MissConductUS · 06/05/2026 20:14

I had to Google finnan haddie and cullen skink. Cullen skink sounds a bit like New England Clam Chowder, which is very popular in my family. It's a bit of work to make, so we usually get it in a restaurant or as a takeaway.

How's your mom doing, @Mumtobabyhavoc?

I'm nearing the end of cardiac rehab. I've had 27 sessions, so nine are left to go. I'm sure it's been good for me, but I'll be glad to have those mornings back to do other things.

DD and SiL are moving to their new house in Georgia this Friday. They're renting a truck to move their furniture. SiL will drive the truck, and DD will drive their Forrester. It's about an eight-hour drive. DD has ordered an LG washing machine and tumble dryer to be installed next week. Those are the only appliances they'll need to buy. We've given them some housewarming money to cover those and some landscaping work that's needed.

I went to the local plant nursery/garden center to see what they had for the deck. Winter ran so late here that the stock was a bit lower than usual for early May, but I bought a few things. This Sunday is Mother's Day here, so DH is going back to pick up some hanging baskets of flowers for me to put on the deck, and we're going out to a posh brunch.

The garden center has added two decorative bears. I also saw a really tiny tree frog on the deck on my table, so I took two pictures of him. We had a lovely day yesterday and the birds were really out and vocal. Merlin picked up six species. The blue heron was the only surprise. We are adjacent to a wetland area, but they usually prefer ponds and lakes for fishing.

I had Cullen Skink when I worked in Glasgow nearly ten years ago. It was delicious. I hadn't realised it had so much dairy in it, so I've never had it again.

I have a job interview next week and I've spent the last couple of weeks applying for DSD's PIP and Work Capability Assessment. It's hard seeing how much she struggles and tries to do on her own. I hope she gets approved.

Umanresources · 07/05/2026 15:40

I'm slowly doing my Ocado order and have got the smoked haddock ordered on there. I'm not sure if it's the same as finnan haddie but it will do.

I don't seem to be able to stir my stumps at the moment. It's taking me a long time to get going.

My poor daughter has had to go to bed with a migraine. She hadn't had one for months. Some workmen have turned up to put in a faster broadband and have been drilling and hammering! Hopefully that's the last of it now, it was quite quick, but must be dreadful when you are in pain. I've come upstairs as well, out of the way.

It's fishy Thursday today, alternate name to chippy tea. We used to have it once a week but it's gone to once a month now.

Had to call out the nurse because my dressing has started to slip and is concertinaing round my ankle and I'm starting to look like Nora Batty!

On the plus side superfast broadband is up and running and I just got delivery of a new board game that I forgot I'd ordered! The Traitors.

Dull news is I’ve done yoga, supermarket shop and school run today. Slightly less dull is that I am off to a pub quiz tonight, wish us luck.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/05/2026 19:12

Also did yoga (last night) Dandy.
Just got home from Baby's activity.
Going to put lunch together, fold and put away some laundry and then get Havoc out for a bit.

DandyDandylion · 08/05/2026 07:30

We won the quiz 🎉
Can’t claim to have been much help, we have one person who has a very broad range of knowledge. It is very different to the pub quizzes I remember. You sign in with your phone and then the team who answers correctly in the quickest time gets the most points. Each week there are 6 rounds but different topics each week. Good fun with a lovely bunch of people which is the most importantly part. Nice to be on a winning team though.

MyrtleLion · 08/05/2026 09:06

On the phone to HMRC to find out why my large tax refund hasn't been issued. Then I will start thinking about the presentation I have to make for the job interview.

Umanresources · 08/05/2026 20:22

Ooh we love a quiz here. I get lots of quiz books/board games for birthday and Christmas and DD and I often have a quiz at weekends. Actually she asks the questions and I answer them. We do especially enjoy a literary quiz. If we ask OH to join us he very often says no, but will walk through the room and join in for an hour 😄.
Ocado has just been and I’m looking forward to mussels tomorrow, plus sea food salad. I also got bread and butter pudding as a treat.
I finished off my painting of Luffy, from One Piece, a cartoon series on Netflix that my grandsons tried to get me to watch, as they are obsessed. I gave it a go, but it’s not my cup of tea.
I’m just starting a landscape that my sister in law sent over from Spain, where she is on holiday.

Went for a walk by a lake today, and saw a pair of geese with ten fluffy goslings.

bizzey · 08/05/2026 23:55

Hi 👋 😊.
Was out at another hospital appointment with mam today .
She has been doing annoying things ...like ringing me persistently about non important matters .

Ie ...she is poping into her friends house..in case I ring her and she doesn't answer.

(Yes she has a mobile !!.....and we will leave that explanation there !! 🤣🤣🤣)

Anyhow ..I showed her how to voice me /talk a message to me ..is how I explained it .
Practice run ...
::::
Hi bizzey ....I am going to Meg's tonight for supper ..see you tomorrow ..

Equaled ....

Hi Bizzey ...I am going to Mexico for sure...super ...

🤣🤣🤣....
Then we got onto a chat about Emojis!!

OMG !

I said don't ever use the aubergine emoji...
She said ...
I don't like Aubergines...they give me tummy ache...

( I am struggling to breathe right now !)

I showed her the Aubergines emoji..

I said now do you understand...

We are at home by now ...but she still whispered....

They look like penis's ..!

Ohh my word ...did we have a laugh 😂 sorting out all of this stuff.

Didn't work !

Had to do something later .

bizzey · 08/05/2026 23:58

For those who don't know my mam ...she is 86 !
87 in a few months.
So the aubergine conversation was always going to be a good one !

At least I can do that conversation with her !!😂😂🤣

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/05/2026 08:40

👋 Bizzey. Nice to see you posting. 😊
How's your toe?
Hope all goes well with the interviewing Myrtle.
Do you paint or draw every day Uman? Great talent!

I just watched a 5 minute video how to make a Japanese egg sandwich.
Five. Minutes. 🙄

I really need to get to sleep. 😂

OP posts:
Umanresources · 09/05/2026 16:37

Thank you @Mumtobabyhavoc I had to look at the Japanese egg sandwich as well. It does look rather delicious. I saw that they have them in Canada but I don’t think they have them over here. My grandma used to have a milk loaf, but it looked nothing like the Japanese version, which does look rather delicious.

I love painting, I’m not that good but I'm quite good at copying. I used to go to art classes and my favourite weeks were the ones where we did miniature paintings. I did an owl and a village one. They are 3” x 5” and are painted on ivorine, which is a cellulose sheet, like a synthetic ivory, used for miniatures. I was in a minority in the class, who enjoyed it, so ended up with several blank ones. I must have another go at this. I don’t paint daily, but have spurts.

Nurse came today as dressings were slipping again. We have got very friendly, as she has been the most I got her a thank you gift. She was quite pleased, as they don’t usually get anything. I got them a box of biscuits for their staff room as well. All the nurses who have been here have been so kind and lovely, it was good to give back to them.
Homemade chicken burgers and salad tonight.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/05/2026 21:04

Uman, the Japanese egg salad looks too sweet for me and I find white bread isn't substantial enough for me - it always leaves me hungry. I haven't made egg salad in ages, easiliy not since Havoc was born. Mine is basic: mashed hard boiled eggs, but not too mashed, salt and pepper, just a bit, proper mayonnaise, Hellman's, but I grew up with Miracle Whip which I'm not a fan of now as it's too sweet for me. I like using a seeded whole grain bread, buttered. And if I'm being particular, I'll dice up a good dill pickled and mix it into the egg. This is my usual bread Silver Hills
If you are used to regular grocery store/white bread this will taste quite stale. 😂 Honestly, though, I notice a huge difference in how I feel eating this compared to white (or whole wheat, which usually isn't remarkably different from white).

I definitely think you've got a talent with your drawing and painting. 👏😊
Are you doing okay?

It's also Mother's Day here, tomorrow, Miss.
So Happy Mother's Day to you and to all the mums, stepmums, fostermums and everyone in a mothering role here. Cup of tea from me to all of you. Everyone is so kind on our little thread, I'm grateful to be a part of it with all of you. 🩷

Played for 4 hours straight in the park with my little one. I needed to get some horrid work stress off my mind so it was therapy really. If anyone saw a manic 40 something charging around the playground, whizzing down the slide and attempting to fit in the baby swing - it was me. Little one was delighted.

Work can do one.

MrsSPenguinz · 09/05/2026 22:39

Beautiful paintings @Umanresources

Good luck for job interview @MyrtleLion

Happy Mother's Day to anyone celebrating it tomorrow and thanks for the cup of tea @Mumtobabyhavoc and have a latte back from me.

Love the bear @MissConductUS

DH is probably going to take early retirement and if it goes through will stop working from early summer. Will be lovely to have him here all the time.

DH and I did 4 hours gardening today and I got round the shed completely cleared and cleared leaves etc. Let silkies wander with us.

mathanxiety · 10/05/2026 02:45

Mmmmmm egg salad sounds really good. I always add chopped green onion to mine.

I spent the day doing a deep clean of the bathroom and kitchen and ended up with a bag full of old makeup, bottles with half an inch of conditioner, and bottles of polish that smelled iffy.

DD baked brownies on Friday evening - a new recipe, and they are delicious.

bizzey · 10/05/2026 12:59

Well my Saturday night tv viewing was a bit ruined !

I settled down with my little treat of chocolate eclairs (the ones with cream in ...not the hard sweets !)

Only to find they were out of date !!

I bought them on Thursday 7th .
Date on box said (Wednesday)6th .
☹️☹️..
Luckily, I have the receipt.

I will go back to shop .
I know it is is only £2.20 ...but it is annoying me so much ! 😂😂...

Shop is just down the road so I can fit it in on my little daily excise walk .

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/05/2026 19:40

Oh, yes Math. That's how my mum made egg salad when I was a kid. She always added chopped green onion. I like it that way, too.
Several years ago I was at an event and the ladies were making egg sandwiches and adding a bit of curry powder to some. It was quite good. i had never seen that before, or since.

Happy Mother's Day to all North American moms, especially Math and Havoc, and to any lurkers!

We went out to a lovely brunch after church. For excitement, I cleaned out the humidifiers we run in the winter before putting them in the basement. A lot of mineral scale builds up in them, which has to be cleaned out with white vinegar or a special cleaning solution.

I've started moving my plants out onto the deck, including Alfred the Aloe. The lovely hanging basket was a Mother's Day gift from DH. I've never had one that had a mix of different flowers like this one. And my Zinnia seeds are sprouting. DH picked up two 55-quart bags of potting soil for me, so I'll be all set to transfer them to pots when they get bigger.

Ohh Happy Mother's Day to all across the pond 💐💐💐☕☕🧁🧁!! 💕

mathanxiety · 11/05/2026 01:02

Happy Mother's Day to all celebrating Flowers

DD ordered dinner for us from a middle eastern restaurant and made a cheesecake for dessert.

I got two loads of laundry done, and tried some fancy tea that I got for Christmas, Mojito Marmalade flavour.

I noticed a pair of emails from a bank I never had any dealings with, asking me to verify my identity to continue with the process of setting up my new account. That bank's fraud department is only open M-Sat, so I'll call then tomorrow to see if they can figure out what's happening. I have a feeling it's a case of phishing. Whoever sent the emails spelled my name wrong.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/05/2026 05:44

Sounds like a lovely day for both of you Math and Miss. 🌷
I took the kids to a Powwow today, a first for all of us, and then to the playground, a trip for a donut and a Costco run. I was going to make lamb chops for dinner, but was too tired by that time, so picked up a prawn taco meal kit at Costco.
