A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

We've just had a little thunder storm. 🌩️⚡️

Had the permanent crown to my tooth fitted yesterday. I made risotto for supper, as I'm supposed to have soft food for 24 hours until the cement sets.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/05/2026 16:06

I haven't made risotto in ages @sueelleker Yum!

Just watching a morning chat show here, having an iced latte with a pbj bagel and keeping an ear on the dc who are playing in the bedroom. Apparently the bed is the Kitty Boat - but there are also monsters in there. 😍

Back to the chat show - I've just learned that You the birthday means You're the reason we're here. All the cool kids are saying it. Apparently.

Mumtobabyhavoc; I made it in my Instant Pot-no stirring, and it only takes 6 minutes.

Crosorbled · 14/05/2026 19:07

I was looking for some inexpensive birthday present ideas for a well off brother in his 60’s . Thank you .

DD won some vegetable seedlings in a raffle at her workplace, so we are now the caretakers of three sweet pepper plants, three tomato plants, numerous romaine lettuces, a pot of chives, and a pot of tarragon. I've never grown tarragon before.

It's still too chilly to put them out overnight, so they'll sleep in the three season porch and I'll set them out on the deck innthe morning until night time temps get a bit higher.

MyrtleLion · 15/05/2026 12:09

Job interview went well. Waiting to hear if I'm through to the next stage.

Went to a conference yesterday where I spoke on a panel and really enjoyed it.

TV and tea today.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/05/2026 17:14

I hope you'll get some good news myrtle. 🩷
Math, it has gotten quite chilly here for gardening. It's currently 9c.

Not enough sleep for any of us last night. It was after 11pm for the kids and midnight for me. Awake at 6 with baby. Havoc was awake just after 7. I need to get laundry on and Havoc to an activity in about an hour.

@sueelleker risotto sounds lovely. I used to do that with my DD and we’d spend ages stirring the pot.I like the sound of a 6 minute meal. I might get my OH to try one. We’ve got the asparagus season now.

@Mumtobabyhavoc it’s lovely eavesdropping on the children at play. My DS used to spend time in my mum’s kitchen, playing restaurants. He was in charge and for some reason he had a one-armed man as the waiter and who washed up. My mum had a serving hatch between the kitchen and the living room. We would be in fits of laughter listening to his conversations with his helper. He was about 3 at the time! He still enjoys cooking as well.

@mathanxiety good luck with your seedlings. I like the thought of you putting them out in the morning and bringing them back in at night. I hope they carry on growing well for you. I might see about growing tomatoes here. There’s nothing like the taste of freshly harvested tomatoes.

@MyrtleLion i hope you get to hear about your job soon. Good luck. Do you have a date?

I seem to have lost a week somewhere. Nothing much happening here either, but somehow the week went. I did do some more art painting, but I wasn’t impressed with my effort, although it did keep me busy for a few days. I’ve sent for some more brushes, in the vain hope I might produce a Van Gogh. In my head I know what I want to achieve, but my hand doesn’t seem to be working in conjunction with it.

We’ve been trying to co-ordinate summer holidays for my grandsons to spend some time here in summer. I’m looking forward to that so much. My elder grandson who will be 11 next month has said that we can have a Portuguese day, when he and his brother (9 years) will cook all the meals for us, so we in reality just me are going to have to find and order all the ingredients. That’s something to look forward to.

My DD is away for the next few days, so it will be quite quiet here. I do have some foreign language series to watch, because I’m usually the only one watching them.

Nurses still coming and legs bandaged from knee to toes. One of the nurses ordered shoes for me because I can’t wear any of mine. Finally the order came; there was just one shoe and it was too small, so this Cinderella won’t be leaving with the Prince 🫅🤣

sproutsandparsnips · 15/05/2026 22:18

Good luck with the job @MyrtleLion
Is a three season porch like a greenhouse @mathanxiety? DH has planted tomatoes, chillies and cucumber in the greenhouse and courgette in pots.
Loving your deck @MissConductUS
@bizzeythats so annoying when you are looking forward to something.
A friend came to visit last weekend - we had a lovely time going out for lunch, went to cinema then Sunday lunch at a rooftop restaurant with views over Swansea bay and mumbles, followed by a coastal walk.

MyrtleLion · 15/05/2026 23:06

Thank you all for your support. I will hear next week but not sure when.

MyrtleLion · 16/05/2026 12:51

Bought some jeans for the first time in over a decade. I had a £4 off voucher if I spent over a certain amount so I then had to buy a top (short sleeved stripey shirt) and some more summer weight trousers. Obviously.

That was enough excitement for the day so I'm just putting my feet up with a pot of tea and some lemon and chilli crisps.

MissConductUS · 17/05/2026 16:33

Math, that will be quite the vegetable garden. It's been cool overnights here too, but we're in for a stretch of much warmer weather now. It's a lovely sunny day, and we're expecting a high of 88 F (26 C) today, so the air con is on already.

Fingers crossed about the job, Myrtle. Job hunting is so stressful and slow.

We got a letter from our bank yesterday informing us that our checking account had been restricted due to a security incident. DH rang the bank to find out what happened, and it turned out that some bloke had walked into a bank branch in our area (but not our regular branch), claimed to be him, and tried to withdraw money. He presented a forged driver's license as ID. The bank scanned a security pattern on the back of the license and determined that it was a fake, so he was sent on his way with nothing. They reported the incident to their fraud department, which then restricted the account.

We had to go into our branch to open a new checking account, and now we have to update all of the direct debits that come out of the old account for utility payments, mobile phone, credit cards, etc., which is a bit of a bother. The old account will still accept deposits, and they'll pay the direct debits if they see that they're a regular thing. Interestingly, DH opened the account over 30 years ago with a British bank, Marine Midland. They were bought by HSBC, then their retail branches were bought by two subsequent American banks. But we were able to keep the same account number through the whole process, which was very convenient.

My Zinnia seedlings are almost ready to transplant, and the cactus in the front garden looks like it will flower at some point in the next few weeks.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/05/2026 17:18

@MissConductUS why didn't the bank call police? How unsettling!

I was up almost an hour before the kids this morning. I put a load of laundry on, got their breakfasts ready, then made myself an iced latte and toast from that whole wheat seeded sourdough from Costco I love. The wash finished just as they woke up. Having an hour to putter and just have some quiet time to myself has been a good start to my day. When we're all up at the same time it can be chaotic and loud and if I'm tired I find I am rather short-tempered and shouty.

I took the kids to Kits beach after dinner last night for some playground time and then we shared French fries and watched the sunset.
I just read an article about Vancouver and it said that catching the sunset is a very Vancouver cultural thing. I have to agree. Even though it was chilly, some people were in the water. Crazy - it was only about 14c and it had been 8c in the morning.

@MissConductUS I would have thought that bank would have called the police as well. How weird.

@Mumtobabyhavoc Lovely to watch the sunset. We used to walk along the beach in Llandudno and watch the sun go down. So special to share it with your children.

Roast chicken, vegetables and Jersey Royals cooked in seaweed tonight. Delicious. My OH got me an Apple Watch and I hadn’t realised how little sleep I was having. 4 and a 1/2 hours average over 4 nights. That isn’t good. I’ll have to go to bed earlier and see if it improves.

My favourite nurse came today and she thinks I might need steroid cream, which would mean daily visits for 3 weeks then 3 times a week for another couple, until it tapers off to one a week. 😱 I thought there was an improvement.

MissConductUS · 17/05/2026 21:08

DH asked them about calling the police, and was told that their policy is to avoid any confrontation that would put them at risk. The guy left as soon as they gave him his phony license back, so wouldn’t have been there when the police arrived anyway.

i think they should have reported it and given the police their CCTV footage.

mathanxiety · 17/05/2026 23:07

sprouts the three season porch is a sort of mudroom off the kitchen that has three walls composed of windows and the door to the outside and deck. It's usable for sitting in from late spring to early autumn and it gets used as an overflow fridge at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I also use it for storage of my deck pots and gardening tools, and sometimes dry lau dry there in warmer weather. I think in decades past such porches were used as sleeping quarters in the summer.

The vegetable seedlings are now all planted in pots, watered, and ready for whatever the coming season throws at them.

MissC that's a really horrible inconvenience to you. I hope you won't have any recurrences of this individual trying to steal money from you, set up accounts, take out loans, etc.

mathanxiety · 17/05/2026 23:07

Lovely photos, havoc

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/05/2026 05:17

Uman I wanted to give you both the 🩷 and the 💐 reaction for your post. You're really going through it. But, the shared enjoyment of sunsets and your lovely meal brought a smile.
Math, what a useful room!
Miss, yes, understandable considering the propensity for violence there. But, geez letting him go and do nothing ... 🤦‍♀️

I'm pretty tired after a full day. I took the kids for a ride on the mini train in Burnaby and spent some time with the model trains; hiked a bit of the trails beside and behind; home for lunch; packed up kids and we took my mum to med appt across town; pharmacy and bank; home to drop off my mum and grab a snack for the kids; took kids to Playland for just over an hour before closing; home and made dinner; got kids bathed and ready for bed; had a bath; threw laundry in; now watching a bit of a Garfield cartoon on Netflix with the kids. We'll be off to bed soon. Holiday Monday tomorrow. 🥱

This looks new: 🫪

Thank you @Mumtobabyhavoc it does help to know we can share good and bad things on here. I do try and stay positive and I’ve got a couple of friends who are having a harder time than me, so I’m very grateful for what I do have.

I can’t believe the weather here today. It’s absolutely pouring down at the moment. Half an hour ago it was bright sunshine, before that thunder and lightning. 3 seasons in one day!

My grandsons and I have been making plans for when they come here in summer. I think we will have to get up at 6 each morning and go to bed at midnight; and possibly squeeze in an extra couple of new days, to cover everything. I’m making the most of the time they want to spend with me, it might not last that long before they want to stay home and be with friends.

sproutsandparsnips · 19/05/2026 21:53

What a lovely sunset @Mumtobabyhavocand it looks so tranquil.
@Umanresourceswe also had roast chicken and jersey royals on Sunday with asparagus as in season. I cooked as DH away with friends. Usually he does Sunday cooking in fairness.
@mathanxietythat sounds like a very useful and versatile room!
Just chilling after work and swimming - watching The Invisibles as recommended by @Umanresources

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/05/2026 01:18

I really do love watching the sun set and am glad my dc are loving it, too. 🥹

Took dc to school today and took a bunch of pics as it'll be the last time they share a classroom as Havoc heads to Kindergarten in Sept. 🥹

Did a load of wash and some work for Havoc's activity this afternoon while my mum and Baby napped and Havoc watched Number Blocks then Scooby-Doo. ☺️

Now have got three dinners going: my mum is having a left-over bison burger, I'll have the left-over salmon and prawns and the dc will get the chicken stew I've got in the oven.

My OH simmered the chicken carcass to make stock. He showed it to me, in the pan. It was the smallest pan we have and there must have been about half an inch in the bottom. It looks like it had been cooked for a couple of days! I have no idea what he did with it. Usually I have enough stock to make soup for 3 of us. No chance with this. Not sure what’s on the menu tonight, although we do have 2 freezers full.

I’ve not managed to do much today, even though I have lots to keep me busy. I’m slowly doing an online food order. It has taken me all week and I’ve still not done it. It’s taken me all day to do this post, as I’ve been so distracted, looking at paints, paper and watching the Indian version of The Traitors.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/05/2026 20:43

Another busy day here. 😵‍💫

It's Friday!
I think I'll be able to put some of my plants out on my deck this weekend. I intend to do a cull of my clothes too, and perhaps make a run to Goodwill, hopefully with a few bags.

We ordered spinach pizza from a popular local Italoan restaurant for dinner. We have a little left over for tomorrow.
