A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Great news re the refund Penguins. 👏
Glad you feel a bit better. Just keep looking after yourself. 💛
How lovely about the bouncy castle Ella. Things like that really lift spirits. 🩷

Snow has turned to rain. Boo. 😔
I just finished doing some painting in my kitchen and touch-ups of scuffs etc on some walls and baseboards.

Gosh @EllaDisenchanted how lovely for the children. It must be so hard for everyone though.

Good news about the refund @MrsSPenguins and hopefully you will continue to improve healthwise.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I watched some of the Oscars last night/early morning. I did find some of the skits a bit cringe and the humour seemed a bit hit and miss. I’ve not seen any of the films, didn’t know most of the actors, so it went over my head. I think I’m feeling my age. My DD goes to the cinema a lot and she has seen 3 films in the last 4 days. She enjoyed Hamnet and I’m looking forward to seeing that myself.

The nurse is only coming once a week now on Fridays, so I get to have a lie in the other mornings. I have got some birthday presents to wrap for my OH, but he’s been in and out of the living room several times this morning, so I have to hurry in between his visits!

I’m going to make some more bookmarks today, but with dried flowers.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the UK mums!

Penguins, sorry you are still suffering from Covid. It sounds like you are near the end of the infection. It doesn't sound like the Paxlovid did you much good. Great news about the refunds.

Math, the same storm is now here as torrential rain, which will go on all day.

Ella, the bouncy castle was a brilliant idea. How often have you had to go into the shelter?

DD and SiL are in Georgia this week, house hunting. The army is going to transfer him to a base near Atlanta when he finishes his master's degree this spring. It's so exciting that she's getting on the property ladder at age 24.

There's a pedestrian walkway over the Hudson River north of us. It's almost two miles long, the longest in the world, reportedly. It was a railroad bridge built in 1889, converted to a walkway in 2019. It's now a NY State Park and is managed by a non-profit organization that maintains it and hosts events there. My parents were very fond of it and often walked over it. Here's their website:

https://walkway.org/

To raise money, the non-profit allows you to place a bronze memorial plaque on the bridge, and my brother and I decided to get one for my parents. It was recently installed, and we went to see it on Saturday. The head of the non-profit met us there to show us where it was. The views were spectacular. The only problem was the weather - it was about 3 C with 50 mph wind gusts. So we put on our winter clothes and walked out to see it. Then we went to a lovely restaurant nearby on the river for lunch, so it was a nice day out. DS was with us.

The bridge to the south is the Mid-Hudson Bridge, which has a smaller sidewalk (pavement?) for pedestrians. Trains have to cross the river further north.

That’s a lovely commemoration to your parents Miss.
I don’t know the average number of times we go into shelter daily, it varies. Today so far has been one pre alert and 2 sirens, so twice in the shelter. We just had the last one and there were quite a lot of booms, and the safe room steel shutter shook- it’s suspected it was a cluster bomb again.
I can see the neighbours kids have gone right back out to playing on the bouncy castle again!

we bought the game ‘operation’ to keep the kids busy- I used to play it at my grandparents when I was little. Very nostalgic seeing them play it!

sproutsandparsnips · 16/03/2026 21:41

That’s good news @MrsSPenguinsall round
That must be so alarming @EllaDisenchanted- sending good wishes
Lovely pictures @MissConductUS
You've had such a lot of poor weather @mathanxiety!
Had a pleasant weekend - DS played in the morning on Saturday - cooked a pasta bake for the team. Watched all the games on super Saturday - brilliant win for Wales and thrilling final game!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/03/2026 01:35

I'm so happy to repoet both dc have eaten a normal dinner portion plus birthday cake for dessert. It is two weeks since Havoc became ill first. I'm taking them to the pediatrician this week for a check as both have lost weight - and Baby didn't have extra to lose in the first place. But, they're in good spirits and eating now so I'm relieved.

How was your day Penguins? It might seem like the meds didn't do a lot, but I think it likely prevented you from getting worse and/or helping you recover sooner. It sounds like you've been hit particularly hard. 💛💐

OP posts:
MrsSPenguins · 17/03/2026 02:10

Glad your lovely little family is recovering @Mumtobabyhavoc

We have been a bit variable today. DH worse again and I was periods of a bit better and periods of bad. I did manage to have a bath, get bedding washed, clean bathroom and join an hour's talk online to listen. DD left very early at 5.30am or so and is rowing coaching for the week. DS seems fine. At least the horrible Paxlovid taste is just gone. We have not have COVID or vaccines for 3.5 years so think it's hit fairly hard but hopefully now will be clear for next 3.5 years, not really had any illnesses in that time. Paxlovid seems to be very strong on me but does seem to clear my body of everything including infections. It's like an ultimate 5 day detox of everything. Itching is going now I have had last one this morning. Hoping will both be better by the weekend so can garden.

That's a lovely tribute @MissConductUS

So sorry about all the alarms @EllaDisenchanted that must be so hard for you all. I hope it ends soon.

Glad you had a good weekend Sprouts

Hope your oh has a good birthday Uman and thanks.

Happy St Patrick's Day 🍀

mathanxiety · 18/03/2026 00:24

Belated St Patrick's Day wishes to all. My driver's side car door was frozen shut this morning, so I had to climb in through the front passenger door. The sunlight defrosted it as the day wore on, so I didn't have to repeat my contortions of the morning as I tried to avoid the gear lever and accidental blowing of the horn

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/03/2026 00:28

Pizza for dinner: pesto, bell pepper, spinach, prawns, feta and a mix of cheese.

How delicious @Mumtobabyhavoc- I’m about to eat a (bought) pesto, pea and ricotta quiche from Aldi…..

Poddingtonpeace · 20/03/2026 21:23

I put my washing on the line for the first time this year. An ant tried to sneak into my flat via the washing basket.

Oh, that sounds good! I'm guessing whisking eggs with ricotta and a bit of pesto, then?
How was it?

I got a delivery of a few books. The Mr Poirot might be for my grandsons as an introduction to Agatha Christie. The not getting murdered one I read straight away in one sitting and it’s very amusing.

Umanresources · 20/03/2026 22:21

It’s my OH’s birthday today and he’s had some lovely gifts. It’s been a lovely day, weather wise, but we’ve had a lovely dinner tonight, scallops to start; pork tenderloin, with new potatoes and asparagus. I got an Ocado order because I was ordering a birthday cake and when the order came I’d not put it on. My poor love had to go out and choose his own, so we put the happy birthday topper and candles on it and the family videoed with us from Lisbon, so we all sang Happy Birthday (very badly!) My DD is going over there tomorrow for a couple of weeks, but we’ve kept it secret from the boys, so it will be fun when she arrives and I can see it on video.

mathanxiety · 21/03/2026 03:13

What a lovely surprise for them, Uman.

Weirdly, I had a quiche tonight too. I used the usual eggs, milk, and cheese, with onions and roasted asparagus.

I have a new phone and I'm going to try to set it up tomorrow. Wish me.luck!

MrsSPenguins · 21/03/2026 13:38

Food looks lovely as always @Mumtobabyhavoc

Your quiche sounds great @mathanxiety

Glad your OH had a great birthday @Umanresources

Beautiful day here and silkies are wandering the garden. Just had a grilled salmon Caesar salad which was nice. Last of the refunds have come through for Sri Lanka so have been refunded in full except for visas which were £39 each and they need money far more than us so that's fine.

Will attempt gardening with DH. DD returned from a weeks rowing coaching of an Oxford college which she is paid for and now working her punting tours job 2 days this weekend.

I heard the cat cry downstairs this morning and said DH the cat is crying then I heard DS open his door to let in the cat. DS and DD have resisted and DS is wandering garden paths a lot. Going through clothes and shoes.

MyrtleLion · 21/03/2026 15:17

Those books look wonderful!

I am sowing some wildflowers I had in a packet tomorrow.

It's DSD's birthday on Monday so we're all going out for dinner tonight. It's Pizza Express which means there's not usually anything nice for me (dairy intolerant and no pasta or pizza carbs) but it's her favourite. In fact I've just checked the menu and I can have the niçoise salad. But I hate tuna.

sueelleker · 21/03/2026 16:48

Got home from shopping to find I'd accidentally shut the dog in the spare room! She must have nipped in when I took the laundry upstairs. No damage done, apart from scraping up the carpet just inside the door.

Winter Spring GIF

It's a somewhat sunny, but a bit chilly, spring day here after a week of heavy rain due to being under an atmospheric river. 😵‍💫
This winter has been our first without snow in over 40 years. 😔

I'm glad Penguins is up and about and it sounds like you are eating well. 💛
Poor doggo Sue. Did you get that look when you let doggo out? Treats are in order. 😊
Myrtle, I also have food restrictions as lactose intolerant. Is it lactose for you or something else? If lactose, does Lactaid help you? I used to carry it with me in case my only option when out had milk products, or I suspected milk (ie at restos steaks and burgers are basted in butter to finish before serving icymi).

Got a stupid stupid stupid ticket yesterday from the police. They were doing checks and I didn't have my licence on me. I have no idea where it is. So, I'm off to replace it as I've found some offices opened today and pay the stupid stupid stupid $81 fine.

😤

Oh I'm so sorry! Do you have to carry your licence where you are?

In the UK it's not compulsory and if you give your correct name and address when stopped they can actually look up your details.

I am lactose intolerant though it's improved in the last few years. But I have not had cheese in 20 years and still can't bear it. So nearly everything has cheese on it.

But DH has said just to have the seafood pasta and pretend pasta isn't a plate of carbohydrates 🤣

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/03/2026 20:11

Myrtle, yes, you must carry your license when driving. It is a bit ridiculous with technology now and police can view your record. But, I got my replacement today and paid the fine, which was reduced by $25 for prompt payment. I guess that's the upside. It does pee me off as I could have been given a warning or an order to produce it within a certain time frame as obviously I'm not a chronic offender, no history of infractions or outstanding monies owed. So, 🙄.

Do you have a selection of lactose free milk products? If yes, are you okay with them?
Years ago, I read some regular products are more easily tolerable: cheddar, yoghurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, goat's and sheep's milk. So, I began experimenting very slowly starting with a teaspoon of regular yoghurt every other day and as I saw I wasn't reacting I increased the amount and started adding tastes of the other products. I still can tolerate regular cheeses well, though. Now, it is much easier to have dairy as lactose-free dairy (cow's) is pretty much available everywhere.

It has become quite sunny again and I'm just going to get the kids ready to go out. Although, Havoc is having a rough day with lots of tantrumming so far. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry about the fine @Mumtobabyhavoc

Hope you have a lovely birthday meal for DSD @MyrtleLion

DH and I went gardening and then cleaned all the downstairs floors so 4 hours doing everything together. We are both exhausted but it was a lovely day and got another 6 paving slabs down for final path, some lawn area dug, grass seed down and compost over and cleared some leaves and cleaned the paths. Silkies followed us though had to stop them eating the lawn seed. This is the back of the garden.

@Mumtobabyhavocit was bought from Aldi but quite nice!
Love the garden @MrsSPenguins
I have put several loads of washing a day out this week to make the most of the weather - DS home from uni has helped a (little) bit….
Been for a walk along the river before watching our first team have a very narrow last minute and hard fought win today. Makes our chances of staying up this season much better.
