A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Miss, surprisingly I am much, much better! It was gorgeous here today and I was out with the kids for about 3 hours at a school playground, a forest walk; and then on our way home a stop for donuts for our dessert.
After dinner I puttered around and cleaned the bathroom and dealt with some laundry.
We watched two kids/family movies and I managed to get a nice chunk of time to myself to have a bath and wash my hair - thanks to Prime keeping the kids entertained. 😂

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. 🩷

I've spent the last couple of hours scrolling Amazon for gift ideas for the kids (it's such a rabbit hole!). The Easter Bunny 🐰😉 sometimes leaves a gift along with chocolates if Santa asks ... (rod, meet back) 😂🤷‍♀️
Anyway, have got lots of ideas. 🤗
I'm going to load some podcasts and go to sleep.

Sending love and support to those needing it. 🩷💐🫂

Glad you’re feeling better @Mumtobabyhavoc
@MyrtleLion the patio sounds really lovely. Our daffodils and camellias are out but patio has quite a lot of algae on it and under the bird feeders is particularly manky. It also desperately needs repointing.
@bizzeyi have become quite a convert to the air fryer - it’s pretty convenient.
Love the quirky bookshelf @Umanresources
Day off today, so got shopping done, cleared the fridge of some disgusting mouldy cheese left over from Christmas (!) - tried to find new togs for DS as he is playing 5 times this week what with training and games and I fear they wont stand up to it, not helped that he frequently leaves them caked in mud……
swimming shortly.

MrsSPenguins · 03/03/2026 19:28

Hope you had a nice time with your university friends @sproutsandparsnips

Glad you are feeling better @Mumtobabyhavoc

Did 5 hours gardening with DH at the weekend doing 1/3 of the final path, weeding and preparing the soil. Lots of lovely bulbs out now and the solar dandelions came on and silkies were digging holes to sit in.

Also rearranging the holiday as DH chose flights via Dubai with Emirates to Sri Lanka for the better plane. We don't know what is happening but have cancelled everything but the flights at the moment as that was free cancellation. Flights may go right up to the wire, a few hours notice though its a few weeks away. Am researching alternatives - am loving all the holiday research at least.

We also got a new coffee table and side tables for the living room to go with the new leather sofa bed and they match so that's good.

Umanresources · 03/03/2026 22:14

I woke up yesterday with a cold sore. It’s been years since I had one of those and it was when I was stressed or run down. I’m not doing anything to be stressed about or exerting myself. Surely board games aren’t stressful and we just laughed all afternoon and evening. Even my OH joined us for one of the games, Poetry for Neanderthals, which was very funny, trying to describe words, using words of only one syllable, or you were hit with an inflatable club! It was probably funnier than I’ve described.

@MrsSPenguins hope you get your holidays sorted. Such a state of turmoil in the world at the moment. Well done with the tables. I’m holding off on the chair shopping at the moment. Perhaps that’s what’s causing me stress.

@sproutsandparsnips you sound as though you are busy. I’ve been there with the furry cheese, especially the cream cheese. We used to make a spaghetti, chicken, mushroom, cream and cream cheese dish, which was really quick and easy to make but we’d forget about the cream cheese in the fridge. I’d order more and we’d end up with several on the top shelf that I couldn’t reach!

You sound as though you are well on the way to getting better @Mumtobabyhavoc thank goodness.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/03/2026 01:33

Sprouts, I'm trying to decipher your meaning of "togs." I've only heard it used to mean swimwear while I was in Australia (also, cossie for costume from swim costume).
My guess is you are referring to shorts. 😊
Penguins, which other countries are you considering?
Uman, that game does sound funny. 😊

Where did the last two months go?

It's raining today and sunset is now closer to 6pm. Yesterday, our provincial gov't announced that we will no longer turn clocks back in the fall.

I really wish we'd stop the daylight savings switch here too, havoc. It sounds as if you're on the mend, so keep it up!

Penguins I thought of your holiday when I listened to the news on Saturday. I hope you'll be safe whatever way you go.

sprouts a rummage through my fridge is long overdue. It always feels like a major improvement in my life when I toss the remains of cheese, occasional long forgotten leftovers, etc.

Uman Poetry for Neanderthals sounds like a blast!

mathanxiety · 04/03/2026 03:02

Togs is the word I always used for swimwear in Ireland. I say swimsuit or togs now, depending on who I'm talking to - togs for DCs, swimsuit if I'm shopping for one.

I just remembered another one: bathers (for bathing suit, which we say here).

Am here at Emerg with Havoc since 9:30pm or so, it's 11pm now. Has been vomiting since 7:30pm or so. Havoc completely soaked one of the washrooms projectile🤮 (which I reported) and I've just heard housekeeping paged to clean it up.

My initial thought was UTI, but I'm thinking Norovirus now. 🤔

OP posts:
sueelleker · 04/03/2026 07:50

Havoc; My Mum used togs as a catch-all word for clothes. "Get your togs on" "Have you got your PE togs with you?". She was from the north of England, so I don't know if it's a regional thing here.

MrsSPenguins · 04/03/2026 08:27

Thanks @Umanresources Hope your cold sore gets better.

Sorry Havoc is sick @Mumtobabyhavoc

Thanks @mathanxiety

Its rapidly evolving with the holiday situation. We currently don't think Sri Lanka will be viable in a few weeks as our flights are via Dubai. We have cancelled everything for free apart from flights as these are £1000 total to cancel but if they cancel everything is refunded. People seem to be finding out a few hours to 24 hours before the flight but we won't take the flights anyway. The booking is protected by CAA rules here so if they cancel we can get a full refund of everything or re-rerouted but that seems to be just a few hours to 24 hours before and only for way out. Way back is not protected for re-rerouting and even if it was you are told immediately before flight and it can involve waiting several weeks abroad which is not an option for us. Currently they are offering refunds up until 10th, that was just offered yesterday. Its getting a bit clearer day by day but I think its certain now we won't go and its just wait to see if they offer a free refund or we have to pay £1000 in cancellation charges / lost seat fees. Not ideal but could be a lot worse and UK travel advice is don't travel and they are evacuating. They are trying to operate flights asap but we don't want to risk it.

As for a new destination not sure, maybe Azores but we are flexible as long as its safe. We can book now but it feels not right to yet so am just planning. Azores is also complicated for flights, safe but lots of little flights and hard to get connecting ones. We have been to Sao Miguel (Furnas) before and loved it and would like to also visit Flores Island (Portugal / Azores).

I’m Irish and togs, sometimes swimming togs, is always used for swimwear as @mathanxiety said.
It’s also used for football shorts here, or used be at least. I haven’t really heard it used for clothes in general though.

Umanresources · 04/03/2026 13:42

I wonder if togs is a regional thing. I knew exactly what you meant @sproutsandparsnips and we are from the north as well.

Hope Havoc is on the mend quickly. Have you found out what it is yet @Mumtobabyhavoc ?

I’d love to go back to Canada for a holiday. I’d ideally like to fly to Toronto and travel across the country by train to Jasper. I’ve spent many a happy hour looking at the itinerary for these trains. It just looks fabulous. I’d also like a river cruise on a small boat, not a huge ship though. I’ll carry on dreaming for a while longer. I had a win on the national lottery yesterday. I think my £2.50 will get me to the end of my road! 😂

My son and his family go to the Azores in summer and they end up on the small planes @MrsSPenguins. I hope you get things sorted soon.

sproutsandparsnips · 04/03/2026 21:56

Apologies for confusion - togs means rugby boots (can refer to other sports boots too!)
I think it’s a Welsh word.
We also say bathers for swimming costumes
Sorry Havoc is poorly @Mumtobabyhavochope they are feeling better and you avoid it……
It was quite therapeutic @mathanxietyand the fridge is certainly less cluttered now
Sorry about holiday @MrsSPenguinsbut choosing somewhere else may be exciting?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/03/2026 22:52

Loving the convo re togs. 😁 I looked the word up and the definition was clothes. That was just a tap/look-up def, though.

Havoc is much better - thanks everyone for the good thoughts and queries. 💛
It seems it is a viral d&v. The V was pretty bad and lasted until 10:30pm, so about 3 hours; and the D part started when we saw the doctor around 1am. We got home around 2:30am because it took a while to clean up, Havoc needed another set of Pull-Ups as I had only brought one, so a lovely nurse must've run up to pediatrics to find some.💛
I had to wake Havoc couple hours later to get cleaned up again, but so far it all seems to be over except for loss of appetite. It almost seemed like food poisoning, in retrospect, but we've all eaten the same foods or shared food. 🤷‍♀️ I'm glad we went to emerg, though, because it can be so tricky with young kids and it's not straightforward deciphering their symptoms - ie Havoc was saying tummy felt hot prior to the first round of 🤮

I hope everyone is doing ok. Lots going on. 🩷

I'm glad Havoc is better. It sounds like he picked up Norovirus somewhere. It is so hard to see them go through something like that, and I think taking him to the ED was the right call.

Myrtle, your patio is lovely. Those paving blocks are really handsome.

Penguins, sorry your travel plans have been so disrupted. I feel awful for everyone who is currently stuck in the Gulf with no way home.

It's about 3 C here and raining, which is melting the snow piles and creating a massive amount of fog. DS stopped by last night to pick up something he needed and stayed for dinner. The cats were confused when he left again.

I had cardiac rehab this morning. They're starting to push me a little harder, which is fine, but I'm a bit worn out now.

I've taken some homemade beef stew from the big freezer to defrost, so we'll have that with some egg noodles for an easy dinner tonight. I'm just thankful that we're getting rain instead of more snow.

MrsSPenguins · 05/03/2026 21:38

Glad Havoc is better @Mumtobabyhavoc

Thanks @MissConductUS Homemade beef stew sounds lovely.

Thanks @sproutsandparsnips

Lovely patio @MyrtleLion

Thanks @Umanresources

Good news today - our Sri Lankan flights are now eligible for a full refund so it looks like everything will be refunded in full (not 100% on seat bookings and 2 Sri Lanka visas but great result). I looked into Azores and love them but there are so many flights and its still borderline on weather and in the end we have gone for La Gomera in a spa hotel flying from local airport. It will be around 23C and very safe which is currently our main criteria. Not as good as Sri Lanka but much cheaper and safer and we can do that another time.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2026 00:38

Oh, god, dying here. I was 🤮 all morning with v&d; stayed in bed mostly sleeping; baby started 🤮 about an hour ago; and obv my mum will be next. Havoc seems better, but very eating lightly

Catching up with you all .

@MrsSPenguins ..so glad the holiday situation is getting sorted .
Are you all going ?

Lovely patio @MyrtleLion ... though know my luck , I would forget about the edge and fall off it !

I have had a full week of it so far.

Had my hair done finally on Tuesday.
I was /am very pleased with it .
Different hairdresser, but I really like the way she has done my colour and cut.

Wednesday...well I had a medical appointment with a nurse at my GP surgery, but I think she is a visiting nurse .
She was doing a lung function test on me , requested by the GP I saw January following that viral /flu thing I had .

Turns out ...I am definitely asthmatic with mild COPD !

I have a new inhaler (pink !! ..not brown !)
Had a good chat with the nurse and I now understand things better.

Going to be difficult to get into a routine to remember to take the inhaler x 2 a day as I don't feel ill !

But she said I am so used to running on empty it feels normal to me.

She also completed me on my lovely hair and said it was very natural looking !

(I know she was just making conversation as I think it was part of the test to make sure I can do full sentences and stuff 😅..but I will take the. Complement !)

Today I had a good delivery and I had to give my date of birth.
(Yes alcohol was involved in the shopping !!)

He didn't believe my birth year !

How on earth can a bit of colour and a blow dry take years off me !

But it did 🤣.

Hospital with mam tomorrow.

Hopefully these appointments will start to reduce to 3 monthly now

I hate them !

Ohh and had phone call from dermatology .

They have called me in to remove/do biopsy on the mole on my back .

I think I mentioned it ages ago .
They had just been keeping an eye on things and doing their special photos of it.

Now they have decided to remove it and test it .

I am not worried at all ...
If I hadn't gone to the GP about my back ache last April ...it would never have been discovered !

Could have had an appointment next Friday, but it was a hospital 2 buses away .

Then they offered me MY hospital 15 min walk away for the week after .
So I have agreed to that.

Monty27 · 06/03/2026 02:19

I've been thinking of moving as the traffic where I live is hell.
I had a word with myself and decided the real issue in my life is me because the house i live in is quirky and I've made new friends plus I'm still close to my old and dear friends.
Introspection prevails.

ednaclouda · 06/03/2026 05:46

packing to go on holiday to harrogate love the restaurants
sitting in the sun
mooching on mumsnet for far too long

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2026 06:05

It's been over 6 hours of baby vomiting. I've just given a kids' anti-nausea meds. Fortunately, baby has just had a good pee. So, not dehydrated and is asking for water. ✅

Havoc has the D; my mum has now got D; and I vomited a little while ago.
I put a fresh sheet on the bed, an old one, and will also put towels down for the kids to sleep on.

OP posts:
sproutsandparsnips · 06/03/2026 10:52

Oh no @Mumtobabyhavocwhat a disaster! Really hope you all recover soon!

MrsSPenguins · 06/03/2026 11:22

So sorry @Mumtobabyhavoc Hope everyone is better soon.

Sorry there are so many medical things @bizzey

Have the farm shop box this morning. Cleaned the bathroom as DS took a 2am bath. My bank card had fraud on it but the bank spotted it and is sending me a new one.

Looks like no rain this weekend so will do more in the garden.
