A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Just missed a day and there were 30 new posts!
Not sure I can keep up.
Lovely to hear from @HelenaJustina
Welcome new posters!
Feel better soon @Mumtobabyhavoc
What a lot of snow @MissConductUS
I am going to Cardiff tomorrow to meet up with old uni friends. DH and friends will have to manage the cooking without me, and I may not get back in time to make any welshcakes……

mathanxiety · 27/02/2026 02:29

MissC I hope you're dug out now despite the unreliable new snowblower

We have very little snow on the ground now - it's just sticking around in shaded spots. A few little green shoots have poked up, but not many. I've been passing a little patch of snowdrops under a tree.on my way to work for the last few days. It's still very cold, and windy too.

havoc it might be worth getting that cough investigated.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2026 03:30

@mathanxiety

Had a fever all afternoon of over 40c and was freezing. Luckily, my mum watched dc and I was able to get into bed until almost 6pm when I got up to make dinner. Have now taken Tylenol; not really hungry, but am drinking water. I suspect once fever comes down I'll have an appetite. 🤒😷🤧

I second Math I think you should get a second opinion on your illness, Havoc. You might need something more than Tylenol.

I’m patiently waiting for the nurse to come. I’ve taken painkillers and it’s quiet and warm in here. I just want to sleep at the moment. I do have a small bookcase to build, a painting to paint. I was dreaming that I had been to a staff meeting and couldn’t get a lift home. At the staff meeting we were watching a firework display and the sticks from the rockets were falling near us, they were actually paintbrushes though, rather than sticks. I also had to return some Fuzz Buzz books to the school that I had put in the loft. I took early retirement from teaching 13 years ago, but I still dream about it, especially not having any plans for lessons, which never happened IRL. It’s very panicky!

It’s almost weekend. Hope everyone manages a break of some kind. DD’s friends are coming here on Sunday for a games day, which should be a fun day for all of us. I’ve got snacks and drinks for us and we usually order pizza as well. I’m looking forward to it immensely.

MyrtleLion · 27/02/2026 12:52

For the broken sofa we will file a s75 claim with the finance company. And then go to the Furniture Ombudsman if necessary. We've decided to get a new sofa so I don't care too much whether we get some money back. It costs only my time. I'm waiting for someone to email me before we take the next steps.

My patio should be completely laid today, though it will need grouting and other bits. A membrane and peashell will go down on the tiny front garden soon and then we'll place two skimmia japonica white globes in pots on it.

For the new patio, we already have a skimmia japonica rubella with a big rowan tree and a smaller red willow as well as a large choisya. We are adding a pittosporum Tom Thumb in a big pot, some rosemary also in a big pot, a herb planter and trellis with baskets of herbs, and a star jasmine for another trellis. So the garden should smell heavenly this summer. The patio has really opened up the garden and it feels bigger. My neighbours are envious, saying it's transformative, and they want something similar.

MissConductUS · 27/02/2026 16:51

Welcome, @Mimicking. This thread usually flies under the radar, as we don't generally get a lot of posts on any given day.

@bizzey, when the snow melts, it usually does so gradually enough so that the ground just absorbs it. It's going to warm up this weekend, so we should have some melting. That's good, as I can just barely access the mailbox.

The snowblower was picked up, repaired and returned the next day. It was two shear pins that broke, which means that DH somehow hit the driveway with the augers (the blades that spin around and pick up the snow. The machine has an adjustment that lifts it up off the driveway, which makes that less likely, at the cost of leaving a bit more snow on the surface. He'll have to try that next time. The shop was lovely about it, aren't charging us anything for picking it up or the repair. They also gave us some extra shear pins in case it happens again.

We had more snow on Wednesday, about an inch or two, which DH and I just shoveled off the driveway. I had three dental implants placed on Wednesday afternoon, which has made it much easier to chew on my right side. I have one more implant they're fabricating, which will go in at the beginning of April.

Our bird feeder is almost encased in ice, and one of the local reservoirs is covered in at least a foot of snow. I think the snow in the front garden will be with us for quite a while.

Uman, games day sounds fun. 😊

I think I've picked up something else, likely Covid, from the kids' school on Monday. Havoc was playing with a little boy and when I went over I saw snot pouring out that boy's nose. I had symptoms middle of the night/early hours Wednesday. It sounds crazy to pinpoint it like that, but it's the only close contact we've all had as we were all sick for about two weeks previously and we stayed away from school an did outdoor activities otherwise or were at home. 🤷‍♀️

It is so odd to see spring emerging in the UK while you're experiencing so much snow in Canada and the US.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2026 21:01

Not out here on the west coast @MyrtleLion
I saw irises sprouting around the 3rd week of January. 🤷‍♀️

New air fryer arrived this afternoon.
I panicked a bit when I saw the delivery box 😮😁..but thankfully the AF had no relevance to the masshossive box it came in 😅😅.

Not unpacked it properly, but I am pleased at the size .
Now I am nervous if I have made the right decision.

I got a take away Chinese yesterday and have some spring rolls left over .

I will try and reheat them and see how it goes .
I don't actually give re hearing times .

I am presuming samish to hearing in oven ..just a few minutes less ?

Think I am going to miss hearing up a tin of baked beans /half a tin .

Which is silly as a saucepan is still the same sort of washing up .

I have got some paper liners /cases for the compartment ..

Hopefully it will save me a bit in my bills as not having to pre heat and cook some chips in my big electric oven !

bizzey · 27/02/2026 21:38

I chickened out .
I have got them in the normal oven 😅.

I think I am too tired to read all the instructions and temperature stuff properly.

I have got some croutons to make tomorrow so I will try them first .

At least if they go wrong , it is not such an expensive waste .😁😁

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2026 21:48

Give it a good wipe @bizzey.
once you're sitting down with your dinner go to YouTube and search for demo videos for your af's make/model. 😊

Contractor was here again this morning. New cupboard door attached, entry door stripping replaced and latches adjusted and bedroom closet doors adjusted. ✅

Checked my temp about an hour ago and it was 38.2c without Tylenol so far today. I managed a couple pancakes with fruit for lunch and a strong cup of tea. Nose is blocked again and I'm coughing a bit. 🤧😷🤒

Contractor and I wore a masks while he was here and I sprayed Lysol in the air. 🤞

OP posts:
bizzey · 27/02/2026 23:10

@Mumtobabyhavoc warm soapy water wipe .

I am presuming 1st use will give off a smell ?

Might chuck in a few frozen chips to start with .
I have checked my bread rolls and decided I don't have enough to waste 😅!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/02/2026 02:01

@bizzey smell? Maaaaybe? Kinda like when you first turn an electric heater on after a long while? Check your manual for that. Make sure nothing is lurking inside.

Managed to get out for a Costco run. Got a price difference refund on diapers I bought at the end of January that went on sale the following week. $11 🤗
Bought Havoc soccer boots for $30 which I thought was pretty good. Grabbed a rotisserie chicken plus garlic chicken legs with thighs; more diapers as still on sale; fruit, veg, milk and some extras. Was in/out in about an hour which was pretty good. Just finishing up dinner now. Havoc has new shoes on. Baby is bringing out cake pans from the kitchen. Mum is folding towels. I'm starting to cough and contemplating a bath even though it's just 6pm.

*.bizzey; *They usually recommend 20 degrees F lower than an oven, and 20% less time.

Umanresources · 28/02/2026 13:46

@Mumtobabyhavoc so Covid is not going away any time soon. Do you still have sense of smell and/or taste? I’d never lost my sense of smell before and I was really surprised when I couldn’t smell my bathroom lemongrass scent. Take care of yourself though, fluids and rest (with 2 young children not that easy I know).
We’re having a day of mixed sunshine and showers today. Sun shining at the moment thank goodness.
@MyrtleLion your patio sounds gorgeous. I am not a gardener at all, so have no idea what to put in. I took out membership for RHS Bridgewater, which is about 12 minutes away by car. We have been there several times. We used to go there when it was just a garden centre and it got quite run down. Sometimes when we went, there were more staff than customers. We watched it being built with great excitement, especially when they showed the television programmes. When the family was here at Christmas, we all went to a light show, which was fantastic. As a wheelchair user I was given a fabulous view, along with the rest of the family. Hopefully we can go there again when the weather gets a bit warmer.
@MissConductUS do you get very hot summers to make up for the very cold winters? I remember a hot summer and freezing winter, when I was in Toronto. Although it was1976 and that was the record summer in the UK, which I missed and people still talk about that year! I’m still friends with 3 ‘girls’ I met over there. They still live in Canada and we used to go to a disco a couple of times a week. We met a group of young men, one of whom married one of us. It’s lovely to have photos of that first meeting, such great memories.
I hope you managed to use your air fryer @bizzey . We’ve somehow ended up with 2 air fryers, as one stopped working, so I got a new one, then a friend got the other one working. We have run out of work surface in the kitchen now!
I assembled my small bookcase yesterday and it’s lovely. I’ve got a few books on there, but I want to sort out my other larger bookcases in my living room too.

Come and tell us your dull and unexciting news 35: Calmly through the day
Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/02/2026 20:50

Uman, yes, not able to smell or taste and that happened just before getting all the cold-type symptoms. I noticed I couldn't smell or taste coffee on Wednesday morning. That's how I know it's Covid -- it's the telltale sign. AND I LOVE MY FOOD! 😭😭😭😭

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 01/03/2026 01:59

havoc please get as much rest as possible (tall order with small DCs, I know). I hope you'll shake it off quickly and completely.

I spent the day spring cleaning and I'll do more tomorrow. DD has taken to her bed with a pounding headache after a day doing team building nonsense at her workplace.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/03/2026 03:30

Math, thank you for the kind wishes. 🩷
I don't think anyone likes team building exercises, btw.

Coughing now and sinuses are a mess, but I feel okay. Had the kids out to the playground for over an hour and the fresh air was good, but it was a cold wind despite sun. Had chicken on croissants with grapes and strawberries when we got home; then I made wonton soup with tomato, kalettes and cabbage chopped into the chicken broth; and froyo bars for dessert. It was a pretty good Saturday.

Counting blessings considering the news today and sending prayers to those who need it.

The patio will be completed next week. I will post pictures when it's finished.

I assembled a trellis planter this morning then I went to two garden centres to buy lavender but ended up with pinks instead. Which will flower June to September and smell amazing too.

We'll have a few pots, a climbing star jasmine and a herb trellis as well as the established tree at the back. I'm a plant and leave and water when I remember gardener, so everything has been chosen for that style.

MissConductUS · 01/03/2026 15:15

Havoc, it certainly sounds like you have covid, but have you had a nasal swab test to confirm it? I'm sorry you've been so ill for so long. I had covid last summer and it was miserable.

Uman, the summers here are hotter than those in the UK because New York is about 750 miles closer to the equator than London. Winters are colder because we don't have the lovely warm Gulf Stream that you receive in the UK. We have a lot more air conditioning and central heating to make up for it. Life is hard in the colonies. 😁That is a lovely bookshelf.

DS is with us for the weekend again. We had a takeaway pizza on Friday and went out for a nice dinner last night. The waitress was bringing us our drinks and somehow spilled them off her tray, getting some on my arm and seat. I didn't let it spoil the meal. These things happen, and she was very apologetic about it.

Pertinentowl · 01/03/2026 15:58

As we have to shelter in place I have spent the day in bed watching bridgeton. Had spagetti Bol for dinner and am now going out to get passport photos in case we have to leave suddenly. I kind of hope we do, I can go to my sisters. Got a mammogram tomorrow, not looking forward to it

MissConductUS · 01/03/2026 19:06

Welcome, @Pertinentowl, and thanks for sharing your news. I assume you’re somewhere in the Middle East.

A mammogram is never fun.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2026 19:31

Myrtle your patio will be lovely when it's all put together. My own deck is still looking like a bleak wasteland. I've only killed two plants over the winter and the rest are looking healthy, so when we get to the point where nights are around 55°F or above they can all be taken out again. I'm going to prune my hibiscus and research ways of encouraging it to bloom. It didn't produce a single blossom last summer.
