A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Fighting a cold still. Seems to be a sinus infection now. 🙄
Contractor was here today to replace kitchen drawers and a cupboard.
Baby napped about 90 mins then Havoc napped about 2 hours. Both must still be be recovering as well, although appetites are good.
Gorgeous day here. Sunny and 2c atm.
Sunset is now at almost 5:40pm.

I got every cold going when mine were younger Havoc, benefit is now I seem to have a bullet proof immune system. Hope you are all feeling better soon.

We enjoyed lots of half term fun until yesterday when mil was taken ill. We believe she has had a stroke and it now appears she also had a minor one previously. DH was there till late last night so I am just waiting till he wakes to hear the latest.

MissConductUS · 20/02/2026 11:38

Havoc, I'm sorry to hear that you're still unwell. We've somehow managed to avoid anything viral this winter. Of course, you having the kids exposes you to a lot more viruses. BTW, I love that you call them bubs. I called mine mubs when they were that age, and I have no idea where that term came from.

Dandy, was your mil able to get to a hospital ED right away? I hope she's doing better today.

DS started his new job on Tuesday, and has been staying at his flat this week. It's been a bit odd not having him home. Of course, we were empty nesters previously when the kids were at uni. He's coming home tonight and will spend the weekend here. We're also expecting snow this Sunday (of course), so he may have to head back to his flat on Saturday or Sunday morning. The forecast is uncertain, based on the exact track of the storm. It could be anywhere from one to six inches of snow.

I start cardiac rehab today. I've had some muscle pain in my legs while walking. It may be down to the massive dose of statins the cardiologist put me on, so I've messaged his office about it. I'm hoping he'll move me to a lower dose.

I did make it down to the river, which is still quite iced over, despite the above freezing temps we've had recently. The ice is starting to fracture, though.

@MissConductUS its modern Hebrew -עברית. Classical Hebrew is called לשון הקודש , the holy tongue.

@DandyDandylion i hope all is ok with your mil 💐

I went away for two days with my grandmother for her 80th, sister for her 18th and my parents to Budapest which was wonderful. Very very packed two days; really incredible!

Beautiful photos as ever MissC, we have grizzly weather where it is grey and drizzles. I need to run some errands soon so hopefully it will let up. Sounds like you have referred pain but would ibuprofen gel help?

Ella Budapest looks incredible I would love to do more travelling in general, I haven’t been abroad very often. Did your 80 year old grandmother manage all the sight seeing with you?

Mil saw her GP straight away at home and he said he would’ve called 999 if certain tests hadn’t been negative. He advised dh take her in to A&E and ds went along to help as it is half term. DS wheeled her in as we have a wheelchair and by the time dh parked the car she was in the MRI machine. She is being kept in the stroke ward for now and we will find out more after the weekend.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/02/2026 19:47

Sending support to Dandy and family. 💐
Take it slow Miss. 😊
Sounds like a whirlwind and a great time Ella. 🤗

We're having a chilly few days. It was -4c when I woke up and -2c last night when the kids and I were at the Capilano Suspension Bridge for the Valentine's lights. It was lovely with a lot of pink and red and it wasn't busy due to it being a weeknight, a bit later in the evening and cold. At one point we had the bridge all to ourselves. 🤗

Dandy hope your MIL is on the mend. It was good that it was caught early.
Havoc you are certainly sharing your germs, going back and forth. It always seemed as though one or more of us was ill for a few weeks, especially during my first year of teaching! Gorgeous photos again.
Ella Budapest looks like a magical place. My aunt is going to see her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in Australia this summer. She is 92 and going with her DD and SIL. She has been there and to New Zealand when they lived there, probably about 8 times. She is fantastic and only uses a walking stick occasionally. She’s much fitter than me.
Miss I hated being an empty nester. I was on my own when my daughter went to uni, my son was living in London and my OH lived in Surrey and I only saw him at weekends. I cried for the whole weekend after she had been dropped off. She has been back here now for a couple of years and I love having her here.
The nurse came today and has said that my right leg might be discharged next week, my left might be a bit longer though! Weird.

sproutsandparsnips · 20/02/2026 21:58

Loving the pictures @Mumtobabyhavoc@MissConductUS@EllaDisenchanted
The river is so beautiful and serene, Bucharest looks fantastic - would love to visit, and Vancouver as usual is stunning!
Hope mil feeling better @DandyDandylion
DS is trying to book Eurostar @MrsSPenguinsbut needs to get a new passport as current one expires before he goes and won’t let him book without passport that is valid on date of travel.
very difficult week in work - quite frustrating and feel like we are being taken for granted as a unit, but had a good rant…….
No games tomorrow - plan to go for a walk then settle down for the rugby. DS has a game Sunday afternoon.

MissConductUS · 21/02/2026 11:14

@EllaDisenchanted , Budapest is gorgeous. What a lovely trip that must have been.

@Umanresources , that must have been tough being completely alone all week. I've at least always had DH here. And the cats.

Beautiful pics, Havoc

DS did come home last night, which was lovely. However, the forecast for Sunday has worsened, and we now expect 8-12 inches of snow through Monday afternoon. It's supposed to start early Sunday morning, so he may drive back to his flat after dinner tonight. We got his favorite pizza as a takeaway last night.

So we're due for another major snowstorm. What a winter this has been. Thank goodness we have the new, much larger snowblower.

MrsSPenguins · 21/02/2026 19:46

@sproutsandparsnips sorry things have been difficult at work, hope it improves. Passport has been pretty quick - about a week and a half, mine is done now. The photo thing is a lot fussier online than what they allow.

This means I can plan our holiday to Sri Lanka. Flights are booked, transport has been sorted and 2 hotels are booked and 2 safaris booked. I have loved researching it and excited to go there.

@EllaDisenchanted Glad you had a lovely trip. Looks wonderful.

Hope cardio rehab goes OK @MissConductUS and your DS enjoys his job.

Great photos as ever @Mumtobabyhavoc

Also did gardening with DH today - we have finished the squirrel and hedgehog path so 2 out of 3 paths are done and started work on the 3rd path. Then cleaned downstairs floors. Also cleaned bathroom today upstairs as DS made it muddy when he took a nighttime bath. Lots of bulbs out now including irises and solar dandelions came on and silkies wandered round with us. I did some weeding and some digging up of old paving slabs. They are quite heavy. Started preparing lawn area for new turf.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/02/2026 20:57

Oh, Sprouts, sorry you're having a rough time at work. 💐
Miss, I hope the snow isn't too bad, but definitely plan to hunker down.
Penguins, how exciting to be planning a holiday! Sri Lanka sounds exciting! You must be exhausted with all the garden work. 💪

Took dc to the suspension bridge again yesterday. We were there a bit earlier, around 3:30pm, so didn't get the full benefit of the lights, but it was still great. Did the Cliff Walk afterward which makes me quite proud of the kids who just march along. ☺️

That's a very cold looking Hudson River, MissC. Does the ice make cracking sounds when it starts to break up? There's a lot of ice on the Lake here too this year. I hope your cardio rehab will go well. Hopefully the storms will be fewer and farther between as we move toward Spring.

Penguins your holiday plans sound wonderful.

havoc hope you're starting to feel a bit better. Vancouver has now moved to the top of my list of places I must visit, thanks to your photos, along with the Finger Lakes region :-)

I went out for a meet up with friends on Friday evening - just a few of us in the home of one of the group. Even though it had been a long week, it was nice to get out for a few hours and catch up. We're all busy with jobs or babysitting grandchildren, some with elderly parents and/ or husbands whose health isn't the best, so our get togethers are not as frequent as we'd like. I basically had hors d'oeuvres and wine for dinner, and I recommend that for Friday evenings.

mathanxiety · 22/02/2026 01:56

Sorry to hear of your work woes, Sprouts. I hope your weekend is going well.

It was quite cold, but not as frigid as last week, Math. I didn't hear any cracking sounds, but it might be happening further north, where it's colder. It looks like we have at least one more big storm before spring arrives. We're currently under a blizzard warning, with 40 to 60 mile per hour winds and some areas expecting up to two feet of snow. My local forecast is for 12-16 inches of snow, so a bit more than the last big storm at the end of January.

https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/2026-02-18-east-coast-storm-noreaster-forecast

DS went back to his flat last night after dinner, as the snow is expected to start this morning. So it will just be DH and I dealing with it. The good news is that I'm in much better condition to help than I was a month ago, and DH has the new, much more powerful snowblower for the driveway.

We had a nice visit with DS yesterday and sent him more with a proper winter coat that's been hiding in our front hall closet since he came home from uni in 2022, some snow boots and gloves, and some things we bought for his flat. We'll Facetime with him and DD tonight as long as the power stays on. It's going to be a very wet, heavy snow, which usually causes many power outages.

sproutsandparsnips · 22/02/2026 11:34

Thank you all, weekend has been nice and chilled as no local rugby yesterday due to Six nations. Spent all day watching Rugby and Winter Olympics. Happy that Wales finally seems to be making progress though to lose from such a try was frustrating!
No rugby for DS today as pitches unplayable from the phenomenal amount of rain we have had. Going for a walk instead.
More snow @MissConductUS? Is this the coldest winter for you in a while?

MissConductUS · 22/02/2026 12:21

@sproutsandparsnips, December and January were pretty normal, perhaps a bit below average. This has been the coldest February since 1996, and we still have snow on the ground from the storm on 25 January. I'm ready for a bit of global warming.

Parking at the hospital for my cardiac rehab was a challenge as the snow from the last storm was taking up so many parking spaces. If we get another foot or two from this storm, it'll be here for weeks.

The town we live in does a very good job clearing the roads, but we have such a long driveway it's a big job for us, and we have the deck to clear as well.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/02/2026 13:42

Morning everyone 😴It's just past 5:30am here and I've been up since 4:45am when alarm went off. Watching Olympic men's hockey. It's Can/USA gold final. It would be unpatriotic to sleep through this. 😂 Kids must've heard me as they were up a few minutes later. I've made us a little platter of banana bread and fruit. I've got liege waffles for later (local cafe and sold at Whole Foods!). Made a pot of decaf as I plan to go back to bed later. 🤞
Several bars are open for the game having received a special licence to open and serve alcohol. Not sure I'd want that this early though...

Havoc, I just looked at the game, tied 1 to 1. Very exciting!

USA USA USA!

Sorry for not posting. One of my dearest friends died suddenly a week ago from a brain aneurysm and I came off MN for a bit.

Umanresources · 22/02/2026 17:08

So sorry to hear this Myrtle. My condolences and thoughts are with you and your friend’s family. Such a shock 💐

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/02/2026 20:15

Oh, myrtle, I'm sorry. Sending you lots of love and support. 💙💐

Went back to bed after the hockey 😢 then got at 11am to put brunch together in time for closing ceremony - which I've had to rewind because kids, iykyk. 😂

We've got a stack of Liege waffles, a fruit platter and whipped cream and maple syrup 🍁 for dipping.

The waffles are from one of my favourite places and are now at Whole Foods!
Math, add this place, near Granville Island to your list; Sprouts, note it for your next visit! 🩷

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc Impressive you got the kids to do that.

So sorry @MyrtleLion sending lots of love.

Thanks @mathanxiety Glad you had a nice meet up.

Have been quite tired today after moving the paving slabs - had a sunday roast chicken with homemade cauliflower cheese, yorkshire, carrots and roast potatoes. More planning of Sri Lanka. DH got more cat nuts from the shop for the cat.

Ds is delighted to find he's going to be crucified on Good Friday, and no, he's not being Jesus.

HelenaJustina · 22/02/2026 22:25

Evening all, long time no post. I got logged out and life got busy. One password reset later and here I am!

@MyrtleLion so sorry for your loss Flowers

Absolutely no effort on catching up on everyone else’s news, sorry, missed too much.

I started a new job in January, it’s a training post so I’m doing two qualifications alongside. Got the first draft of my first 5000 word essay of this qualification done over half term. Luckily it’s rained a lot and 2 of the DC have exams to revise for too, so it didn’t matter it was a bit of a write off - most of their friends went skiing!
