A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Math, it got up to 47 F (8 C) here today, so I went for a two mile walk. That’s the longest walk I’ve done since I got out of hospital. Sorry you’re under the weather.

We’re going out for a fancy fixed price meal for dinner, including DS.

Penguins, it’s surprisingly common for charging cables to fail, especially the cheap ones.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/02/2026 21:34

Miss, great walk! Re charging cables: yes, any little bend will affect them. I've been buying the ones with the woven outer covers. Excellent. Buy the extra long 3ft one.

We've had some yummy food including this cake for our Valentine's Day dinner. 😋

We were at the planetarium this afternoon for a bit as well.

Pics include one of me and Havoc as constellations.

"New Pence" was deliberately part of the design when the UK went decimal because 2p was the equivalent to about 0.85 old pence (240d to the £, instead of 100p to the £). So millions of those coins were minted...

MyrtleLion · 15/02/2026 11:31

It is snowing. Big fluffy flakes but not settling... yet.

MrsSPenguins · 15/02/2026 11:40

We have also had snow / sleet for second time this winter but its now gone to rain.

Its the third charging cable I've had for a phone bought end of 2024 which gets light use. Its odd as all my other charging things last fine for ipads / laptops. DH just bought the 1 metre one which is tight. I had 2 metres before which was much better. It is a woven one though so hope that will help.

Lovely pictures @Mumtobabyhavoc

Will have a roast dinner with the veg from the farm shop for the veg and potatoes. DS finished the cinnamon buns in the night.

EllaDisenchanted · 15/02/2026 12:10

My lovely parcels for journalling from the black Friday and Christmas sales have finally all arrived. Took their time!
A friend has been picking me up for walks in the morning at 7.20 am for nearly a week. Means getting up even earlier to get the kids ready before we head out. Managed to really up my step count though. Pics are from flowers I saw on our walks.
Tried a few new recipes last week; hasselback courgettes (zucchinis) were a miss, but I am turning them into soup now.
Had a packed week last week, and went out for something pretty much every day. My daughter's gymnastics class did a Mum and child class, where we had to join in. Instructions were in rapid fire Ivrit, and I am definitely not in the best shape anymore, but it was great fun!

Ella, good for you re morning walks. Lovely pics. What went wrong with the zucchini recipe?
Penguins, Myrtle: temp here is currently zero. We might get a bit of snow. I'm not really holding out hope for a proper winter this year now, though. 😢

Been awake since 4am. Only 4 hours sleep. Ugh. Now it's Do I try to get back to sleep or just get up and have coffee, maybe turn on the laundry and watch the news/Olympics? Gonna be a loooong day. 😭

Nothing - just wasn’t my taste!

definitely go back to sleep if you ask me! 💤

BeRoseSloth · 15/02/2026 14:34

We had a helicopter circling overhead for over half an hour last night at 11pm. Presumably Police??

VIOLETPUGH · 15/02/2026 14:36

I have just given my toe nails a very good file, got a small piece of fungal nail that I am trying to treat with pure tea tree oil, thought the filing down may help.

MissConductUS · 15/02/2026 16:01

@MrsSPenguins, we have some snow in the forecast tonight here, but they can't make up their minds about how much it will be.

Havoc, your sleep habits sound worse than mine, but I don't have any little ones waking me up.

Ella, I had to google Ivrit. Was it classical or modern Hebrew?

@VIOLETPUGH , if the tea tree oil doesn't work, try oil of Oregano. It worked a treat for me. I was able to order a small bottle of it on Amazon.

It's a bit gray here, but if the temp gets up to 6 C or so I'll probably go for another walk today. DH and I went to church this morning and stayed for coffee hour, which was lovely. This week is winter break for the schools, and our minister is going to the British Virgin Islands for a week with her husband and two sons.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/02/2026 21:52

Just trying to get kids to eat lunch, watching Olympics skating and did a tiny bit of exercise (abs then a set of squats with baby sitting on my shoulders). 😁 It's not gonna make up for the cake and pie I've eaten past two days and plan on tonight, though! 😂
Watching skating confirms to me the commentary is the bitchiest in sport, amirite?
It's heart-breaking when a mistake is made and I just feel it! 💔

OP posts:
sproutsandparsnips · 15/02/2026 22:40

I have enjoyed watching the Olympics although I know nothing about any of the sports. Skeleton was exciting and I agree about the ice dancing @Mumtobabyhavoc- I feel very anxious in case of a mistake!
My Apple Watch charger has stopped working for some reason @MrsSPenguins so I may have to invest in a new one.
I have finished scrubbing the kitchen floor with pink stuff and am admiring the lovely clean grouting. It has taken quite a few hours of kneeling on the floor……

Umanresources · 15/02/2026 23:01

Had a fabulous shower and hair wash. I got some cast covers for my legs, which worked a treat, keeping bandages dry. I feel so much better now. The nurse who put my dressings on, on Friday, did such a good job. They haven’t slipped down much, thank goodness.

We had a Valentine’s meal, from Marks and Spencer, courtesy of my daughter, which included prawn and lobster Thermidor gratin. I finally got around to making kalettes in blankets, which we had as a side with the main dish. I wholeheartedly recommend these. Thank you to @MrsSPenguins for the introduction to kalettes and to @Mumtobabyhavoc for the link to the recipes. I want to make the recipe again and maybe try some new ones. They do indeed taste like Chinese crunchy seaweed.

I’ve found out that apparently I’ve got dressings for a few months, which really dragged me down, when I was told. I thought it was going to be weeks, not months. The nurses are lovely thank goodness, but I will miss going out, on the very rare occasions I got out for lunch with friends. Some of them have called round, for which I’m very grateful.

Snow fell last night for a few hours, but didn’t lie.

mathanxiety · 15/02/2026 23:42

I overdid it this morning - went to mass and from there to the car wash to clear the coating of road salt off the car and hopefully from underneath as well. I came home feeling dog tired and took a nap. This cold is not going quietly. I'm feeling better than the Finnish big air skier who wiped out on landing all the same :-()

DD made dinner - bangers and mash with pickled red cabbage.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/02/2026 01:38

Awww Math, sorry to hear you're still feeling shite. 😔💐
It's so nice you were cooked for, though. You needed that. 🩷

Watching speed skating. Trying to unwind after three hours trying to figure out how to submit a claim to PBC for my mum. It's for an item not on the list, I selected other, was directed to download Adobe and was supposed to be redirected to the claim site to complete an actual form...anyway multiple attempts didn't work, I tried several times to work around without success. I finally emailed asking for help (can't even email with an attachment, so can't send form). Holiday tomorrow so can't even call until Tuesday.
It's so obvious the site difficulties are to discourage submissions.
I had tried to submit via the App last week to no avail, phoned, on hold 20 mins to be told, No, you can't submit that type of claim on the App, you must use the web-site and do XYZ...
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
(Which I was trying to do today.)🤬🤬🤬

So, then decided to submit to my mum's other plan and it was done in 5 minutes. Easy as one would expect in 2026. 🤦‍♀️

My poor kids were chaos embodied while I did all that which didn't help, breaking things, 😱multiple shouting incidents 😤, Havoc sent to room, mum holding unhappy Baby... now, at 5:30 post meridiem both DC are asleep. 😇😇

I'm going to have dinner with my mum and let them sleep for a bit. 😅

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/02/2026 05:31

So, the bubs woke up, Havoc around 8:30pm and Baby - very out of sorts - around 9:00pm. Poor baby was crying and inconsolable I thought maybe another night terror. 😭😭😭
Both have a snack and we're going to read a story.

Friend called round this afternoon and cheered me up no end. We had a lovely time reminiscing about a holiday we went on years ago with my 2 DC to Hay on Wye, otherwise known as the book town. We stayed in a B&B, as we arrived the host showed us our rooms, gave us the keys and said he had to leave us as a friend needed him. If we wanted anything we had to go across the road and ask someone there. He would be back the next morning to cook our breakfast. We were the only guests there and we had a lovely time. We spent three days looking round bookshops of all kinds. I’d recommend it to anyone. My OH and I went there during a literary festival, but we camped. Went to a few talks from authors and some musical recitals. I’m missing going there now.

mathanxiety · 17/02/2026 02:13

I hope you'll be able to get the application sorted out, havoc. How frustrating.

I'm feeling a bit better than I did yesterday, which is a good thing as I have work tomorrow. We had grilled sandwiches for dinner. I'm going to have an early night.

DandyDandylion · 17/02/2026 21:30

Glad to hear you are getting out walking MissC, hopefully you can build up slowly. You too Ella, I have had a couple of nice walks recently exploring an area I thought I knew but finding new tracks and even a waterfall.

I’m enjoying the Olympics but it is brutal Havoc, I guess most sports are at this level. One tiny mistake and you miss a medal which might be your last chance, as who knows what will happen in the next four years. Admin is the worst, it should take 5 minutes but there always seem to be obstacles.

I think I have missed out on something with the seaweed replica, where do I buy it and how do I cook it? We love Chinese food but as DH is coeliac can’t have it often. Hope your leg continues to heal Uman and your friends can make it round to see you in the meantime.

We had a lovely CoOp valentine meal of steak, chips and veg. It came with 2 bottles of fizz which we have put away for later. It was eaten early as ds had his date on the day itself. He has been very quiet about it but said it went well. Since then we have been very busy with half term activities. The highlight so far was watching Wallace and Gromit’s A Grand Day Out in a cathedral with an orchestra, under Luke Jerram’s moon installation.
The virus we all had is still making us all a bit tired but we are getting out and about and enjoying half term.

Umanresources · 17/02/2026 23:08

Thank you Dandy, so far my legs seem to be healing quite well, although the rest of my medical supplies arrived today. They did include an emollient which contains lanolin, but I’d been telling everyone that I’m allergic to lanolin and they all made a note of that.

The Chinese seaweed tasting food is kalettes, which look like “sprouts with a perm”, as someone said. The best way to cook them is by roasting. I found it better when I cut the tough end of the stalk off. One of the recipes was kalettes in blankets, half a slice of streaky smoked bacon wrapped around each kalette and then roasted. They were delicious. Sausages, boiled potatoes and the last of the kalettes tonight. I need to get some more. I got mine delivered from Waitrose and they were cheaper than Sainsbury’s and Ocado, who were out of stock last week.

I haven’t watched much of the Olympics at all, just some of the snowboarding.

DandyDandylion · 18/02/2026 21:30

Very quiet here today, I had a shopping trip with ds which doesn’t happen much anymore. I casually mentioned his ‘girlfriend’ and he didn’t flinch so I’m guessing they are an item. We had a very nice lunch in our new local market food hall. He had pizza and I had a Thai duck curry.

MrsSPenguins · 19/02/2026 15:42

Love those flowers @EllaDisenchanted

Glad you enjoyed the kalettes @Umanresources

We had a new leather sofa bed delivered on Tuesday (largely as DS worshipped the old one so its the same one again but longer as he's longer). Good to have it all set up, delivery people brought it in, set it up and took packaging away. They came at 7am.

Cat has been a bit unsettled by the wind and so I've had 8kgs of cat on top of me and he's been very cute but very high maintenance. Wind has settled now and he's gone to sleep with his tummy upwards and paws in the air.

Trying to plan a holiday but need passport to come back first. Hopefully can do more in garden this weekend.
