Over the past day the Russians struck railway facilities seven times with drones Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko reported
One of the strikes hit the "Synelnykove" station in the Dnipropetrovsk region. There is significant damage but no casualties occurred.
Svyrydenko added that for security reasons today all trains that were supposed to depart from Zaporizhzhia are departing from Dnipro.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his evening address that Russia is reorienting toward strikes on logistics. In the morning in the Dnipropetrovsk region a special Ukrzaliznytsia railcar β€” a power station β€” was attacked.
At the same time according to Zelenskyy since Friday night there have been almost no strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities except for one airstrike on the gas infrastructure in the Donetsk region.
β–ͺ️Before this the Kremlin stated that Russia supposedly agreed to refrain from strikes on Ukraine until February 1 at the request of US President Donald Trump.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦The USA has still not paid out $250 million in energy aid to Ukraine allocated during the presidency of Joe Biden. Reuters writes this citing informed sources.
This refers to funds originally intended for financing liquefied natural gas purchases and restoring energy infrastructure after Russian attacks.
Part of this money during the Biden administration was supposed to be allocated through the Agency for International Development (USAID). But after Donald Trump came to power the activities of USAID were effectively liquidated therefore the funds allocated to Ukraine became stuck "in limbo."
Reuters notes that the delay in aid is caused rather by bureaucratic confusion in the USA and is not an attempt to exert pressure on Ukraine.
A Ukrainian official said that Kyiv is aware of this delay but is afraid to raise this issue publicly so as not to provoke a diplomatic scandal.

Elon Musk responded to the request of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov to help solve the problem of Starlink usage on Russian strike UAVs.
Fedorov thanked Musk and the president of "SpaceX" Gwynne Shotwell "for the quick reaction and the immediate start of work on solving the problem."

⚑️Emergency power outages have begun in Kyiv, and the metro has stopped due to low voltage, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported.
Escalators are also not working in the metro. Media report disruptions in water and heat supply in some districts.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ͺ Estonia will ban citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus without permanent residence from purchasing real estate.
The authorities consider this a matter of national security: existing restrictions particularly near the border with the Russian Federation and on small islands are no longer sufficient.
The ban will also apply to individuals with dual citizenship if one of them is Russian or Belarusian.
At the same time citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus with a legal long-term status in Estonia will retain the right to buy sell inherit and receive real estate as a gift.
The draft law is planned to be adopted as early as this summer.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡± The future Prime Minister of the Netherlands Rob Jetten has ruled out negotiations with Russia regarding the war in Ukraine presenting a new government program that includes firm support for Ukraine.

Russians have once again shelled Ukraine with missiles and drones. Here is what is known about the consequences as of now.
πŸ”΄Kharkiv. Russians attacked an enterprise in the suburbs causing a large scale fire over an area of more than 5 000 square meters. This is the warehouse of the Philip Morris tobacco factory.
πŸ”΄Zaporizhzhia. Three people were injured as a result of Russian drone attacks on the region. Among them are two women aged 43 and 27 and a 49 year old man.
πŸ”΄Kherson. Russian military attacked a minibus with passengers. The driver died on the spot while five more passengers sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds.

Near Sloviansk, Donetsk region, on January 30, a Russian drone struck a vehicle belonging to communal workers who were returning from repairs at an infrastructure facility.
It is noted that a specialist was killed instantly, while two others sustained minor injuries.

On the night of January 31, difficult weather conditions across almost the entire Odesa region led to wire breakages and damage to power grid elements due to ice accumulation.
It is noted that, as of the morning, customers in the Podilsk, Berezivka, Rozdilna, Bilhorod Dnistrovskyi, and Odesa districts remain without electricity.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡³The UN has called for a halt to all wars in the world for the duration of the Winter Olympic Games.
This refers to the so-called Olympic truce which is supposed to last a total of 52 days β€” starting a week before the start of the Games and lasting until the conclusion of the Paralympics.

The European Union is considering a proposal to replace price caps on Russian oil with a ban on maritime services as part of its latest sanctions package against Moscow, Bloomberg reported.
If member states support the move, European companies could be banned from providing services such as insurance and transportation needed to ship Russian oil, regardless of its price, according to people familiar with the discussions.
A full ban would significantly tighten restrictions on Russian oil and make sanctions easier to enforce, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The EU is also expected to propose additional restrictions on Russian banks and oil companies, as well as on cryptocurrency services and financial institutions in third countries that help Moscow circumvent sanctions. The package would also include more vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet.
In addition, the EU is considering the first use of its anti-circumvention instrument, which would ban the export of machine tools and certain radio equipment to Kyrgyzstan.
The proposed package would also include new trade restrictions on additional companies, goods needed by Russia for weapons production, and limits on imports of several Russian metals, the sources said.

Russia sees little chance of a breakthrough in peace talks, but Putin’s window of opportunity is narrowing β€” Bloomberg.
According to the agency’s sources, Russian officials are concerned that this year’s budget spending could again exceed planned levels if additional war expenditures are required. Meanwhile, new talks are expected in Miami on Saturday, January 31, between Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev and American officials. Russia is seeking new revenue sources totaling 1.2 trillion rubles ($16 billion) to balance a key budget indicator.
This amount equals an additional 0.5% of GDP on top of this year’s planned deficit of 1.6%, amid declining energy revenues and the impact of an unexpectedly strong ruble.
Economic pressures are mounting as the administration of US President Donald Trump looks for ways to halt Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, Putin shows no signs of abandoning his maximalist territorial demands in eastern Ukraine, despite optimism from American and Ukrainian officials about progress in the negotiations.

Ukraine and NATO have agreed on key cooperation priorities, including strengthening air defense, developing Patriot, F-16, and HIMARS capabilities, and working together to achieve technological superiority.
Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov met with NATO Senior Representative to Ukraine Patrick Turner and Lieutenant General Curtis Buzzard, Commander of the NATO Special Security Assistance and Training Mission for Ukraine and the Security Assistance Group for Ukraine (NSATU/SAG-U).

❗️Territorial issues cannot be resolved without a meeting with Putin, President Zelenskyy says.

Russian and Belarusian junior and adult athletes are allowed to compete under their national flags. The decision takes effect immediately, the World Taekwondo Federation Council said at a meeting in the United Arab Emirates.
β€œFollowing the IOC’s decision to allow Russian and Belarusian junior athletes to compete under their national flags at the Dakar 2024 Youth Olympic Games, the Council on January 31 allowed Russian and Belarusian junior and adult athletes to compete under their national flags.

[yesterday's power outage; more info] at 10:42, a technological failure occurred with the simultaneous shutdown of the 400 kV power line between the energy systems of Romania and Moldova, and the 750 kV line between the western and central parts of Ukraine, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.
This caused a cascade failure in Ukraine’s power grid and triggered automatic protection systems at substations. Nuclear power plant units were unloaded.
Emergency outage schedules have been introduced in Kyiv, as well as in the Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions.
Ukrenergo specialists are working to restore power supply. Electricity is expected to be restored in the coming hours.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡±Poland has accused Russia of a cyberattack on energy facilities at the end of last year.
The Polish Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) placed responsibility for the cyberattack on hackers from the 16th Center of the FSB, which handles electronic intelligence.
β–ͺ️About 30 Polish renewable energy facilities, as well as a thermal power plant that supplies 500,000 consumers, fell under the cyberattack on December 29, 2025. CERT notes that the Russians' goal was to irretrievably destroy data stored on devices inside the thermal power plant, but the software made this impossible.

The "ATESH" movement stated that its partisans struck the communication system and weakened the occupiers' electronic warfare (EW) in the Kherson region.
The partisan movement noted that after the damage, the equipment stopped working. Communication and electronic warfare coverage in this area are now practically absent, which creates an aerial "window" for conducting UAV strikes against the occupiers in Crimea.

During January Russia launched more than 6,000 strike drones, about 5,500 guided aerial bombs, and 158 missiles of various types against Ukraine, Zelenskyy stated.

There is quite the Epstein - Russia - Putin link in the recently released files.

Peter Jukes is highlighting it on SM

Sorry to lower the tone by mentioning the Daily Mail but it is headlining a story that Epstein's sex empire was 'KGB honeytrap' with links between Epstein and Putin and Russian organised crime with Russian girls flown in to harvest 'kompromat' on world-famous figures.

"You have [then Prince] Andrew, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and all the rest placed in compromising positions on an island bristling with technology. It is the world's largest honeytrap."

Not sure how true the above is but I have often wondered where Epstein got his money from and it has long been suspected that Putin has something on Trump.

MissConductUS · 01/02/2026 19:13

Not sure how true the above is but I have often wondered where Epstein got his money from and it has long been suspected that Putin has something on Trump.

The New York Times just did an investigation on where his money came from. This, I hope, will go around the paywall.

The long and the short of it is that he started on Wall Street and then became a con artist. No hint of Russian influence.

@MissConductUS that is a fascinating and incredibly detailed NY Post article on how Epstein clawed his way to his millions through manipulation and scams. He truly is a monster.

blueshoes · 01/02/2026 20:12

I forgot to add and it goes without saying, you can tell just from reading the article that the NY Times (sorry not Post) has vastly more journalistic credibility than Daily Mail!

MissConductUS · 01/02/2026 22:54

the NY Times (sorry not Post)

I was a bit confused when you referred to the Post. The two papers are worlds apart. I do occasionally peek at the post, but just for the celebrity gossip and the down and dirty coverage of New York politics. 😁

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-february-1-2026/

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian drones struck a maternity hospital and a bus carrying miners on February 1, causing significant civilian casualties.
  2. The Kremlin continues to use issues unrelated to its war in Ukraine to push the Trump administration to give in to Russia’s demands regarding Ukraine.
  3. Insider reports continue to demonstrate that Russia is trying to portray itself to external audiences as a willing negotiator in order to gain control over all of Donetsk Oblast through diplomatic means.
  4. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk restricted Starlink satellite terminals operating in Ukraine in order to counter Russia’s use of Starlink on drones. πŸ™
  5. Russia is building up military infrastructure near the Finnish border, likely as part of wider military expansion efforts that seek to prepare the Russian force for a potential future conflict with NATO.
  6. Belarus appears to be increasing the quantity and frequency of Belarusian balloon incursions into Polish and Lithuanian airspace.
  7. Several unidentified drones flew over German military infrastructure on February 1.
  8. Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Slovyansk.

❗️The Ministry of Defense, together with SpaceX, will develop a system where only authorized Starlink terminals will be able to operate in Ukraine.

This is the next step in the fight against Russian drones using Starlink to attack Ukraine, Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov reported.

He added that in the coming days, instructions for Ukrainian users regarding Starlink registration for verification will be released.

Unverified terminals will be disconnected.

πŸ”Ή Russia has once again attacked Ukraine with missiles and drones. Here is what is known as of now:

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, a Russian drone hit near a service bus of one of the enterprises, killing 15 people and injuring 7 others.

In the Kharkiv region, three people were injured as a result of an attack on the village of Khotimlia. A fire broke out over an area of about 400 square meters.

In the Donetsk region, the Russians struck Sloviansk with a FAB aerial bomb. A 43 year old woman, a resident of Kramatorsk, was killed. Another local resident sustained injuries.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί Ukraine imported a record volume of electricity from the EU in January amid Russian attacks.

Such support, according to the Ministry of Energy, was ensured thanks to the expansion of throughput capacity: in January, the capacity limit for imports from the EU was set at 2,450 MW.

πŸ”Έ "Russia does not respect any agreements," the EU Ambassador to Ukraine commented on the Russian attacks amid the negotiations in the UAE.

In a Facebook post, she reminded that last night Russia once again attacked Ukraine with UAVs and drew attention to the conditions in which Ukrainians are currently forced to live:

"In Kyiv, the thermometer shows -14Β°C today. For almost a month, hundreds of thousands of people in the capital have been living in cold conditions, without stable heating and electricity. They are freezing in their own apartments and houses. The situation is unbearable. Today's attack is yet another proof that no 'ceasefire' exists."

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺSweden is preparing one of the largest security assistance packages for Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports.

It will include air defense systems and Saab radars, as well as contributions to the Ukrainian defense industrial complex, specifically EW and drones, including deep strike capabilities.

πŸ”Ή Air defense forces neutralized 157 out of 172 enemy aerial targets.

During the night, the Russians attacked Ukraine with 1 Iskander-M ballistic missile and 171 UAVs.

A ballistic missile hit and 12 strike drones at 8 locations were recorded.

⚑️High-voltage line connecting Ukraine and Moldova repaired β€” Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal

β€œToday at 2 a.m., repairs to the high-voltage line connecting Ukraine with Moldova were completed. This adds 500 MW of capacity to stabilize the energy supply in the south,” Shmyhal said.

πŸ”Ή For the second day in a row, the enemy has been deliberately attacking civilian railway infrastructure in the Sumy region, said Minister of Development Kuleba.

A series of drone strikes on the Konotop station and locomotive depot has continued since yesterday evening. The tracks, station area, repair workshop, and the depot’s administrative building were damaged. Fires broke out, and a fire engine was deployed to deal with the consequences.

πŸ”Έ Deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein allegedly played a key role in one of the largest known sexual blackmail operations connected to Russian intelligence, according to Daily Mail.

Journalists calculated that newly released documents in the Epstein case contain 1,056 references to Russia and Vladimir Putin, and 9,629 references to Moscow.

Citing intelligence sources, the British outlet reported on February 1 that Epstein’s private social network and parties were instrumental in collecting compromising material on high-profile Western political and business figures.

πŸ”Ή Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on the Russian strike on a bus carrying miners (15 dead): Russia once again proves its status as a terrorist state.

Sybiha emphasized that there were no military targets β€” the bus was carrying ordinary workers returning to their families after their shift.

β€œThis is truly terrible. Russia once again proves its status as a terrorist state. Those responsible for this and other atrocities must be brought to justice. Accountability is a necessary condition for a just peace,” the foreign minister said.

πŸ”Έ β€œWe are launching verification of Starlink terminals in Ukraine,” Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov explained how to register a terminal to avoid disconnection.

β€œThe Starlink registration process for Ukrainians will be as simple as possible. Just one visit to the nearest ASN β€” free of charge, fast, and without unnecessary bureaucracy.

For businesses, there will also be a simple and convenient algorithm for verifying Starlink terminals β€” online via the Diia portal.

Military personnel do not need to contact the ASN. A separate secure channel via DELTA already operates for the Defense Forces.

There is also no need to put personal terminals on the balance of a military unit or transfer account data β€” it is enough to protect the terminal from blocking by adding it to the β€˜white list.’

We will provide detailed instructions for registering terminals in the near future.”

πŸ”Ή Zelenskyy–Putin negotiations are possible only in Moscow, Peskov said.

Other statements by the Kremlin spokesperson:

▫️ The second round of talks between the negotiating groups will take place in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday–Thursday.

▫️ The Ukrainian β€œsettlement” is a complex, multi-vector process. On some issues, progress has been made; on others, it has not.

▫️ Dmitriev heads the working group on economic cooperation.

▫️ There are currently no specifics regarding the organization of contacts between Putin and Emmanuel Macron.

⚑️Update: Russia attacks Zaporizhzhia for second time in a day, bringing total number of injured to 9.

Russian troops launched two attacks on the southern city of Zaporizhzhia on Feb. 1, injuring at least nine people, including a four-year-old boy, Governor Ivan Fedorov said.

πŸ”Ή Russia steps up attacks with Kh-32 missiles β€” here’s what we know

On Jan. 24, Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting nine Kh-32 missiles, drawing renewed attention to a weapon that is Russia has until now used sparingly in attacks on Ukraine, but often with devastating consequences.

The missile is extremely difficult to intercept, due to its combination of speed, high-altitude flight, and sharp terminal dive. Its use during the full-scale invasion has been linked to some of the deadliest attacks on civilians.

⚑️'Not enough' work being done in Kyiv as city faces heating emergency, Zelensky says.

"Whether there are strikes or not, hundreds of buildings in Kyiv are still without heating. This means that the work being done in the city is not enough," the president said.

Over 500 apartment buildings in Kyiv still have no heat, according to Zelensky.

⚑️ Ukrainians grow skeptical about swift end to war, determined to fight on, poll shows.

Some 43% of Ukrainians do not believe that the war with Russia will end in 2026, an increase by 14% since December, according to a poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).

⚑️Sometimes air defenses remain empty, but Russian attacks must be repelled, Ukraine's Air Force says.

"There were moments when there was a serious shortage of these missiles. I won't reveal any secrets. For example, there is a NASAMS system, but instead of six missiles in the launcher, there are only two," Yurii Ihnat, head of the Air Force's communications department, said.
