🤔 Umerov explained how the trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi will take place on February 4–5.
According to the head of the National Security and Defense Council, the talks will consist of two parts.
First, there will be a bilateral meeting with the American side, represented by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
“We will discuss the signing of security guarantees and the Prosperity Package (a plan for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction — ed.).
Then a trilateral meeting will take place. The Russian side will also be represented at a high level and will have a mandate to discuss military and political issues.
After that, we will report to President Zelenskyy — both on Wednesday and Thursday,” he noted.

🙄 The European Union increased its imports of Russian gas in January 2026, according to Reuters.
Supplies via TurkStream rose by 10.3% compared to January last year, reaching 55.8 million cubic meters per day. Overall, the EU received 1.73 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia during the month — 160 million cubic meters more than a year earlier.
The agency notes that after the suspension of gas transit through Ukraine, TurkStream remains the only route for Russian gas supplies to Europe.

The World Bank plans to allocate up to $40 million to Ukrenergo to purchase equipment needed to restore the power system, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

The Russians are deliberately targeting Kharkiv’s energy system, forcing water to be drained from pipes in buildings across the city, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
“To prevent the network from freezing, we have to drain the heating systems of 820 buildings supplied by one of the city’s largest combined heat and power plants. I understand how difficult this is in temperatures of −20°C. But the enemy’s unprecedented attack on critical infrastructure leaves us no other option. Our specialists see no alternative,” he said.

Russian forces shelled combined heat and power plants that were operating solely to heat districts in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.
“The targets are not military. They are purely civilian: hundreds of thousands of families, including children, deliberately left without heat during the harshest winter temperatures, when the outside temperature is −25°C,” he wrote.

Ukraine has imposed sanctions on Russia’s 142nd separate electronic warfare battalion for jamming GPS signals of civilian aircraft in the Baltic states.
President Zelenskyy said Ukraine is synchronizing sanctions with the EU and has also targeted companies servicing Russia’s tanker fleet, Kremlin propagandists, and individuals involved in cyberattacks against Ukraine and its partners.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Starlink has become an indispensable lifeline of connectivity for Ukrainians. During blackouts, traditional communication networks quickly failed as equipment lost power. Thanks to Starlink terminals, the Ukrainian government, hospitals, and other critical services were able to maintain communication and coordinate operations even under attack.

Russia [was] attacking Ukraine with missiles launched from Tu-95MS bombers over the Caspian Sea region, according to the Air Force.

To protect soldiers from constant Russian attacks, Ukraine is building fortifications designed to shield defenders underground. One such project was recently completed in eastern Ukraine.

Russian forces captured about 245 square kilometres (95 square miles (www.kyivpost.com/post/69248)) of Ukrainian territory in January — roughly half the area taken in December or November last year.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will address Ukraine’s parliament on Thursday, MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak said.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also announced that he plans to visit Kyiv in the coming days.

Ukraine’s central bank, has cut the country’s key interest rate (www.kyivpost.com/post/69295) from 15.5% to 15% and announced the start of an easing cycle, citing slowing inflation that is approaching the NBU’s target, as well as a downward revision to real GDP due to the impact of Russia’s strikes on the energy grid.

German authorities have arrested five people on (www.kyivpost.com/post/69276) suspicion of illegally exporting goods worth at least €30 million to Russia, including supplies allegedly destined for Russian arms companies, in violation of EU sanctions.

Epstein labeled ‘Wealth Manager’ for Putin (www.kyivpost.com/post/69267) in FBI documents.
The files also include letters in which Epstein repeatedly discussed the possibility of meeting Putin, though it remains unclear whether a meeting ever took place.

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-february-2-2026/

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian Security Council Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev used a three-way interview with Western and Russian newswires and an ultranationalist milblogger to reaffirm that Russia’s demands for Ukraine “remain unchanged” and to reject security guarantees for Ukraine.
  2. Medvedev continued to use nuclear carrots and sticks, likely in an attempt to distract attention from and secure concessions during US-led peace negotiations on Ukraine.
  3. Medvedev implicitly threatened and accused Finland of dismantling Russian-Finnish relations.
  4. Medvedev subtly threatened Russians who do not support Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine and possibly against NATO.
  5. Russian forces continue efforts to seize Lyman and subsequently launch an offensive on Slovyansk, but likely do not have the offensive capability to do so in the short-term, in part due to Ukrainian counterattacks in the Kupyansk direction.
  6. ISW continues to assess that Russian forces are at least several months away from being able to begin a ground offensive against Ukraine’s Fortress Belt from the north or east.
  7. The Ukrainian government is working with SpaceX to prohibit all non-registered Starlink satellite terminals from operating in Ukraine as part of joint efforts to counter Russia’s use of Starlink to operate drones in Ukraine.
  8. Belarus continues to increase the frequency of its balloon incursions into Polish airspace.
  9. Russian forces recently advanced in northern Kharkiv Oblast, the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area, and near Kupyansk, Pokrovsk, and Hulyaipole.

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar, I've heard nothing of the kind, and the link no longer works, so the Kiev Independent has taken the story down. I think it's a complete fabrication.

Try this link. It appears that the story originates from the Financial Times and there's heavy use of "undisclosed sources"

West agrees to respond militarily to Russia's ceasefire violations in Ukraine, FT reports

A more extensive Russian attack would trigger a coordinated Western-led military response backed by U.S. forces, initiated 72 hours after the initial breach, the Financial Times reported.

Thanks for the link. Anything is possible, but Trump has been pretty firm about not backing a peacekeeping force with American boots on the ground.

It's great news if it's true.

I'll have a look at some other news sources and see if it's being reported elsewhere.

There is never going to be a ceasefire, not until Russia achieves its aims, goals Ukraine cannot agree too.

Russia, as i ve always believed, will just keep going, regardless of the cost and will eventually prevail, Ukraine will run out of will/weapons/men before Russia does.

Trump isn't really bothered, he sees Ukraine as a European problem, he is in office for another 3 years & Europe, for whatever reason, doesn't care enough to re arm and provide the means Ukraine needs to survive, let alone re take territory..

Its a stain on us all.

Last year drones flew near British military bases twice as often: 266 incidents compared to 126 in 2024.

So reportedly < 1 a day up from maybe an incidence one day in three and that's after all the publicity...not exactly the invasion of the Drones....

Defense Secretary John Healey stated that the military's powers to destroy drones near bases will be expanded

Will? Will? If they are genuinely considered a threat to the bases those powers should have been granted last year....it's politicians continuing to move at a glacial pace or being reluctant to act at all that is screwing UK/Europe, and hence potentially Ukraine.

MissConductUS · 03/02/2026 17:56

Will? Will? If they are genuinely considered a threat to the bases those powers should have been granted last year....

I don't think it's a question of the rules of engagement being made more permissive. I think the RAF doesn't have the kit to take them out. Many anti-drone weapons are under development, but most are still in field testing. Something like the German Gepard would do it, but as far as I know, the RAF doesn't have any. Firing a Gepard in the vicinity of civilian areas would also be problematic.

Laser weapons, high-powered microwave weapons, and small missile systems are very promising for anti-drone use, but they're not combat-ready yet, as far as I know.

I think TBH most examples seen in the UK could be downed with the sort of kit UK police have access to...

Certainly given how crowded the UK and the location of a lot of the bases is there"s no way anyone is going to be given anything more kinetic than a shotgun....

In 2007? That incident triggered a complete review of initial training in the RN.

Yes. One of those times my hair was in danger of turning white, except that of course the first I knew about it was that it hadn't happened. Like the bomb in Mogadishu that went off and destroyed a road about five minutes after my daughter went through that junction, and she couldn't ring me to let me know she was all right because they were on radio silence immediately, so she used forces network to contact my son in another far-flung part of the world and he rang to let me know she hadn't been killed or injured. I was a bit baffled to hear from him, at first, especially since he started with the words "you don't need to worry": as far as I knew he wasn't in any danger at all on the posting he was on at that time, so I hadn't been worrying until he said that – and then of course I started to!

Sweden and Denmark will jointly purchase Tridon anti-aircraft systems for Ukraine for a total of about $290 million, Reuters reports.
The aid package is expected to include around 15–20 systems.
The Tridon Mk2 is a self-propelled, remotely operated 40 mm anti-aircraft artillery system developed by BAE Systems for short-range air defense. It is designed to bridge the gap between expensive air defense missile systems, offering a fast and cost-effective solution against modern threats, including drones, cruise missiles, aircraft, and armored vehicles.

Rutte said that Ukraine will receive a real military presence from its allies immediately after a peace agreement is reached.
[...] "As soon as a peace agreement is concluded, armed forces, aircraft in the air, and naval support will immediately be deployed by those NATO members who have agreed.

❗️Russians have begun to take peace negotiations with Ukraine more seriously, Politico reports, citing sources.
The media's interlocutors link these changes to the update of the Ukrainian negotiating team's composition following the dismissal of Andriy Yermak. Russian negotiators allegedly respect the current team more.
Another interlocutor agrees that the Russians' tone has changed but believes that the Kremlin is simply trying to win time or influence the US.

Ukraine has agreed with the US and Europe on a three stage plan in case Russia breaks the truce, FT reports, citing sources.
🔴Within 24 hours after Russia violates the truce, Ukraine must send a diplomatic warning and, if necessary, deploy troops.
🔴If hostilities do not stop, the "Coalition of the Willing" forces join the response, which includes many EU members, in particular Britain, Norway, Iceland, and Turkey.
🔴If this does not help, there will be a response involving the American military within 72 hours after the first violation.
According to sources, the plan was repeatedly discussed in December and January by Ukrainian, European, and American officials.
▪️The "Coalition of the Willing" is an association of international allies seeking to help end hostilities in Ukraine. Plans may include the introduction of a peacekeeping contingent by some countries.

🇮🇳Indian refineries have turned to the government for clarification following Donald Trump's statement that India has stopped buying Russian oil, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
According to the interlocutors, at least three refineries have requested an official government position, and two of them have temporarily suspended imports of Russian raw materials.
