Actually it chimed powerfully with Carney's speech, saying essentially stop doing nostalgia for the old order, pull your fingers out and crack on with the new.

1dayatatime · 22/01/2026 21:52

I think spelt it out clearly by saying "Europe loves to discuss the future but avoids taking action today...that defines the kind of future we will have,”.

I fear that Ukraine will be thrown under the bus despite the best efforts of Zelensky. I don't believe any other leader could have done more in the circumstances.

But if any good is to come out of this sorry outcome then I really hope that it encourages Europe to get its shit together and accept some responsibility rather than just conveniently blaming the bogeyman Trump.

Zelensky: Europe likes to talk not act

Volodymyr Zelensky described Europe as a β€œfragmented kaleidoscope of small and middle powers” with no clear plan to confront Russia or defend itself.

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 21:53

He got a prolonged standing ovation from those in the hall, despite being so critical.

It was followed by a Q&A in which the interviewer talked of "the border issue" and had to be corrected by Zelensky that it wasn't about borders but "lines of contact".

The Interviewer apologised, but for the mere viewer like me it was very illuminating about the terms folk must be using about Ukraine and Russia in their day-to-day discussions.

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 22:24

Oh stop with your nonsense, @1dayatatime . You've tried this one on before.

If you want Ukraine to fail or are just indifferent to it, then sure, you can chunter on about "bogeyman" and "excuses".

An excuse is something you say when you're not that bothered about the outcome, you just don't want to take the blame for it.

If like the rest of us on this thread you don't want Ukraine to fail, then there's no meaning to "excuse". We want Ukraine to survive, and in a way that will work for UKraine and the Ukrainian people.

We built a team around the players we had.

Then one of the biggest players just walked off the pitch. It makes it much more likely we'll lose. For those of us not indifferent to losing, that's not something to make excuses about, it's a catastrophe.

What's more there actually is someone trying to make excuses: the player who walked off the pitch. Mucho deflection there. Everyone else's fault. We're just so dumb for building a team around what the star player wanted...

And the Trump administration does indeed appear to be at best indifferent to who signs the mineral deals and allows the US's commercial presence in the mineral-rich areas of Ukraine. It will be just as happy to sign those deals with Putin – and perhaps even happier.

But don't worry. I'm not going to suggest the Trump administration take responsibility or stop conveniently blaming the bogeyman Europe as cover for the Trumpies' personal ambitions.

They've never taken responsibility for anything in their lives. (Have you watched the Jack Smith hearing today, when Nehls DARVOs Capitol Police who were attacked on Jan 6 to their faces?) So they're not going to start now.

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 22:44

And I never did get round to finishing the detailed critique of that article we all discussed a few weeks ago, about the US 2025 National Security Strategy. (The article @1dayatatime said they agreed with pretty much all of.)

But the TL;DR of my critique was going to be that the writer of that article was as much in La La Land as anyone in Europe who was just waiting for the old order to reassert itself.

The article said things along the lines of "Trump isn't like Putin because he doesn't want to change nations' borders".

That aged well.Grin And it's not like it was a secret that Trump wanted to change borders: he's been shouting it loud enough for long enough.

The writer had completely failed to grasp the fundamental nature of the shift in global relations – and the fact that means everything's up for change, and that it's not under the control of the person who kicks off the shift.

Just look at the bloke who has an affair but assumes his laundry will keep magically appearing clean in his drawers, his dinner will keep materialising on the table, and the fairies will keep taking his children to and from school. Oh, and he'll continue to live in the family home and decide all the finances.

Comes as a shock to him when he's living in one room in a shared house eating pot-noodles and his wages are being attached for Child Support. He genuinely doesn't see it coming; he simply isn't able to conceptualise that other people have agency will make their own changes – and they might not be changes he wants.

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 22:50

This is why I was so pleased with the Carney speech.

It was correctly and brutally realistic.

I might not like that we're where we are. But like it or not we need to recognise that we are here – and crack on. Indeed make an opportunity of it wherever possible.

The US has just made a bonfire of its international relationships. Sad! Move on.

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 22:53

For those that missed it, Nehls' attempt to DARVO Fanone and the other Capitol Police officers present in the room:

https://bsky.app/profile/acyn.bsky.social/post/3mczvkh62mo26
Nehls: I would like to quickly address the police officers from January 6th. And I can tell you that the fault does not lie with Donald Trump. It lies with the US capitol leadership team.

Fanone: Coughs: Go fuck yourself

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 22:58

Oh and by the way on a more personal note.

I will not be forgetting any time soon @1dayatatime 's attempt to minimise and wave away the deaths of the European NATO troops who died after Article 5 was invoked to aid the United States of America.

That one is going to haunt you for the rest of your days.

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 23:42

(BTW I haven't taken the time today to go back and re-read that article on the 2025 NSS, so my commentary on it here is only from memory.)

PerkingFaintly · 22/01/2026 23:57

Just remembered a significant item from Zelensky's speech.

He gave figures for Russian troop casualties versus Russian troop recruitment. If I understood correctly, casualties + desertion was greater than recruitment.

So the Russian army is shrinking. Zelensky said that therefore if Putin wants to keep fighting he will have to mobilise.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 23/01/2026 09:59

yes, a great deal of the world moved to support the USA then and lot of people died.

Key Takeaways

  1. Ukrainian and US officials continued meetings in Switzerland on January 22.
  2. Putin is trying to use Trump’s Board of Peace to curry favor with Trump and negotiate the release of frozen Russian assets to fuel the Russian economy.
  3. There is conflicting reporting about possible US, Ukrainian, and Russian meetings in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on January 23 and 24.
  4. The Russian military command is reportedly prioritizing the provision of light motorized vehicles to Russian troops, further demonstrating how the Russian military is optimizing itself for positional warfare.
  5. The Russian military command is reportedly introducing a tactical-level situational awareness system to help streamline battlefield decision-making, seeking to use artificial intelligence to compensate for the low level of junior officer training and initiative in the Russian military, among other things.
  6. The Russian General Staff is reportedly creating a new drone brigade that will incorporate a large variety of unmanned systems, likely as part of wider efforts to centralize drone units in the Russian military.
  7. European states are increasingly seizing Russian shadow fleet tankers following a series of similar US actions in recent weeks.
  8. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov dismissed five deputy defense ministers on January 22.
  9. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area and in eastern Zaporizhia Oblast. Russian forces recently advanced near Slovyansk, in the Dobropillya tactical area, and near Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka.

❗️Russia’s losses have increased from 14,000 to 35,000 per month over the past year. While mobilization is underway, the figure is 43,000, β€” President Zelenskyy said in Davos.

πŸ—£ Europe needs a strong army of at least 3 million, President Zelenskyy says.
According to him, Russia could form an army of 2–2.5 million troops by 2030.
β€œRussia will want to test who is strong in Europe. Therefore, my advice is to have a strong army,” the president said.

If Ukraine were in NATO, Russian ships would sink off the coast of Greenland just like they did off Crimea β€” President Zelenskyy
According to him, most world leaders expect the US to cool down on the Greenland issue.
The president stressed that sending 40 soldiers to Greenland is not a serious signal to Russia or China, and Europe must either deploy bases to protect the region or risk losing trust.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine is ready to help with its experience in naval operations.

πŸ’ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Defense forces have completed the cleanup in Kupiansk, with a maximum of 50 invaders remaining β€” Joint Forces Group
In Kupiansk itself, the cleanup of the city from Russian occupiers has been completed β€” from those units still present in several blocks. β€œI’m not even talking about districts, I mean blocks,” β€” said Viktor Tregubov, head of the communications department of the Joint Forces Group.
He added that the occupiers are not ready to surrender en masse, with only a few being taken each week.

πŸš€ Russia has about 500 Iranian drones every day and dozens of missiles, β€” President Zelenskyy
β€œWe really created, I think, great ideas with interceptor drones. We use them. We really produce about 1,000 interceptors a day. But this is not enough. This is still not enough. Russia has about 500 Iranian drones every day and dozens of missiles, ballistic missiles,” the president said.

πŸ’Έ Witkoff spoke about the creation of a free trade zone between Ukraine and the United States.
β€œTrump talked about creating a duty-free zone from Ukraine, which, in my opinion, will fundamentally change the situation. You’ll see industry shifting to this region on a massive scale. Imagine being able to outperform your competitors because you don’t pay duties on goods shipped to the United States. So there are some major things we’ve discussed,” he said.
Earlier, President Zelenskyy reported that he had discussed the creation of a β€œfree economic zone” with the American side.

Today, the EU allocated the first €10 million to establish a Special Tribunal to hold Russian leaders accountable for the war in Ukraine.
Impunity is unacceptable, said EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.

They managed to halt the emergency water discharge, allowing restoration of the equipment that provides heat and electricity to thousands of Kyiv residents, the Interior Minister wrote. https://t.me/United24media/39236

US President Donald Trump signed the Charter of the Board of Peace, declaring himself its chairman.
According to him, 19 countries, including the United States, have joined the Council at this stage. Washington has sent invitations to 60 countries.

Russia vows to continue its war in Ukraine (https://www.kyivpost.com/post/68619) until territorial demands are met, despite hours of late-night talks in the Kremlin with a US delegation.

Putin’s spokesman Peskov said Ukraine’s forces must withdraw from Donbas as a condition for any settlement, speaking just ahead of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi.

Zelensky has approved Ukraine’s delegation for talks with the US and Russia in Abu Dhabi, set for later today.
The Ukrainian delegation will include:
β–ͺ️Rustem Umerov, head of the delegation
β–ͺ️Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President
β–ͺ️Davyd Arakhamia, member of parliament
β–ͺ️Oleksandr Bevz, adviser to the President’s Office

The meeting with Trump failed to deliver the expected results for Zelensky, the Financial Times reported.
Documents that had been discussed with US officials ahead of the summit remained unfinished and unsigned. Trump left the Swiss resort after an hour-long meeting with the Ukrainian president without concluding any agreements.

❗️"No one would want to live like in the movie Groundhog Day. And yet that is exactly how we are living now." Key points from Zelenskyy's speech in Davos:
β–ͺ️"A year ago here in Davos I ended my speech with the words: 'Europe must know how to defend itself.' A year has passed and nothing has changed. I must say the same words again."
β–ͺ️"There was so much talk about the protests in Iran. But they were drowned in blood. The world did not help the people of Iran enough. And what will Iran become after this bloodshed? And if this regime survives it will send a clear signal to every aggressor β€” kill enough people and you will remain in power."
β–ͺ️"Maduro is in court in New York. I am sorry but Putin is not in court. And this is the fourth year of the largest war in Europe since World War II and the one who started it is not only free β€” he is still fighting for his frozen funds in Europe and he is having some success. Putin was able to stop Europe unfortunately."
β–ͺ️"There is still no real progress regarding the creation of a special tribunal for Russian aggression against the Ukrainian people. Europe has not even reached the stage where there is a building for the tribunal. Often in Europe there is something more urgent than justice."
β–ͺ️"Today Europe relies mainly on the belief that in case of danger NATO will take action. But no one has ever seen the alliance tested at full strength. If Putin decides to seize Lithuania or strike Poland who will react? NATO exists thanks to the belief that the US will take action β€” that they will not stay on the sidelines and will provide aid. But what if that does not happen?"
β–ͺ️"Europe must learn to defend itself. Sending 14 or 40 soldiers to Greenland β€” what is that supposed to achieve? What signal does it send to Putin? To China? And perhaps most importantly what signal does it send to Denmark?"
β–ͺ️"Ukraine can help protect Greenland. We have the necessary expertise and weapons; Russian ships will sink near Greenland just as they sink near Crimea. We could act if we were asked, if Ukraine were in NATO. But we are not in NATO."

❗️Dozens of sanctioned Russian tankers continue to pass through the English Channel, the BBC has found.
Despite London's statements that they are ready to exert tougher pressure on Russia, 42 tankers under British sanctions have passed through the English Channel since then.
Among them are Sofos and Nasledie, which are part of the Russian shadow fleet. The vessels transport Russian oil, change routes and flags, and turn off transponders to avoid control.
The BBC also recorded six tankers with false flags; under international law they can be detained as stateless vessels. However, the British military has not yet independently detained any such vessel.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·New Greek tankers have joined the Russian shadow fleet for the first time, Bloomberg reports.
The reason is that at the end of 2025 the US and the EU blacklisted over 50 tankers that previously transported Russian oil.
Formally the transportation of Russian oil is not prohibited if the cargo price does not exceed the EU price cap. However such voyages often lack insurance so old vessels that are not a pity to lose are used.
Due to falling prices Russian oil is now sold well below the EU price cap so shipowners are less afraid of violating the restrictions.

πŸ‡»πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦Three illegally detained citizens of Ukraine were released in Venezuela, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated. [...]On January 16 the government of Venezuela announced the release of foreign prisoners including those from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, and the Netherlands.
β–ͺ️According to the human rights organization Foro Penal about 800 political prisoners are being held in custody in Venezuela. Many of them were arrested during protests against the reelection of ex-president Nicolas Maduro in 2024.
