Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

A bigger house!

Would love more space but the cost (stamp duty, increase in mortgage payments etc) is just so massive, I can’t see it could be worth it. All I would be able to buy is a bigger terraced house than the one I have.

Many hundreds of thousands.

An e-bike
My health is a bit shit now so I never cycle any more and I miss it.
But would i use it? Would it go on fire? Would i look stupid on it? What if run out for battery? What if I'm actually just lazy?

@Randomchat I have an e-bike and also have health issues that make regular cycling challenging. I love it, the battery has never run out, I look no more daft than on any other bike, and I’ve never known of one catching fire. You might be lazy, or maybe you’re just being unfair to yourself. Maybe hire some be from a bike shop and try it out before committing to purchasing as they can be quite expensive.

People who have the Philips Lumea - does it work on underarm/bikini line hair?

My thing is a Lumie Bodyclock. I am absolutely not a morning person and I keep sleeping through alarms because I am not fully awake and press snooze loads of times. I've tried everything, different alarms, putting it on the other side of the room - I just get back in and fall asleep again. If I disable snooze then I just turn it off entirely and am late. I would love to break the snooze cycle!

It works both underarm and bikini line.

Am also interested in the LED masks

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 14/01/2026 12:29

If my Dyson Airwrap died today, I'd be ordering another immediately - love it - so little time and effort to get my hair so much better than I've ever managed any other way.

Olaplex fan too - tried some of my friend's Kerastase on holiday recently, and it did nothing for my hair at all, so it's not just an expensive hair stuff thing - it just suits my hair really well.

FurForksSake · 14/01/2026 12:29

I really need some new boots. I’ve been wearing a pair of M&S brown Chelsea boots for three years. They’ve been half a size too big the whole time.

I’ve seen Celtic & co, merry people, fsirfax and favour and all sorts. I just don’t know whether any of the brands are worth buying.

steepdreams · 14/01/2026 12:29

I use my kindle every day. I read so much more now than I did prior to getting it, and my sleep is a lot better too.

Had been holding off on a robot vacuum but I’m very tempted

LarrySherbert · 14/01/2026 12:29

What I want to know is, is there any advantage to having a Kindle over using the Kindle app on my phone which is what I currently do.

But would i use it? If you like cycling for cycling's sake, almost certainly yes!
Would it go on fire? Haha no, just follow the usual sensible measures around battery care.
Would i look stupid on it? Not at all, but even if you do, if you enjoy it, who bloody cares?!
What if run out for battery? Very unlikely, the battery will last you miles and miles.
What if I'm actually just lazy? Again, who cares? If your health is poor you almost certainly aren't, but even if you are - if this gets you out and about that's a good thong regardless.

Buy the bike!!

Morepositivemum · 14/01/2026 12:30

Another who lives for their kindle and can’t warm to the app, I gind myself getting eye strain and headaches. I read physical books too. I use the library for popular books but am on kindle unlimited, the library app is very limited in unusual genres (I like paranormal books and a lot of the authors I read are self published).

On the robot vac ours is great in the rooms that doesn’t have eg chair legs, rugs etc, amazing when you’ve taken everything off the floor or in the rooms the dog doesn’t frequent!! I can’t leave the house with it on as inevitably it gets stuck on something so it isn’t great as I work out of the house!

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

Honestly, get the kindle. I resisted for so long, wasn't just the cost, I genuinely didn't think I would like it compared to a physical book, but I now prefer it. Can read in bed without disturbing my DH with the light, I don't need to take 10 books on holiday thus filling up my suitcase, it's fabulous!

itsthetea · 14/01/2026 12:19

Phone screens are lit different / you can’t read a basic kindle in the dark unlike a phone

that means that the kindle is better for bedtime reading - it doesn’t have the light that disrupts sleep

Ah - sorry - I have a kindle, but haven’t used it in years because i am usually carrying an ipad and my phone, so I just read on those (one less device to carry). Am a voracious reader so love being able to switch between devices and the ‘app’ to remember where I left off previously. I hadn’t taken on board the fact that the lighting is different and people may not like the app for that reason (I am on my ipad/laptop all day with work/study so I the lighting effect is normal for me, if that makes sense). DH loves his kindle, though, precisely because it’s not on his phone and tablet devices - so completely separate from work with no messages or calls interrupting him!

for me I like the bigger screen and its lighter to hold....also if I am out all day, it doesn't burn through my phone battery. If its just for 10 minutes reads here and there when i am out then I use my phone.

Shark or Dyson hairdryer. Are they really any better than my standard hairdryer? I have fine, brittle hair.
Not sure I can justify the cost.

I’ve got a Dyson hairdryer and think it’s worth the cost. The other day we were staying overnight in a hotel and I used my Dyson to dry one side of my hair. It then stopped working (my fault not the dryer, I’d forgotten to ‘defluff the filter for ages and it protested. It was fine once I’d sorted that out!) so I had to use the hotel dryer for the other side of my hair. You could visibly see the difference - Dyson side smoother and shinier, other side fluffier with fly-aways.

My hair is quite different to yours though - thick and wavy. I would also say that if you’d always use straighteners on your hair you might not see so much of a difference day to day. I think the Dyson reduces the need for straighteners but if you’d always use like it very smooth, you’d probably still need to do it. I also think the condition of my hair has improved since using the Dyson and people have commented on how shiny it is.

Springingforward · 14/01/2026 12:33

I'm seeing a lot of ads for Il Makiage foundation, apparently the miracle cure to my mid 50's slightly blotchy, exhausted looking skin that make up just appears to either slide off or sink in?

Worth £45?

Beingacatbed · 14/01/2026 12:33

Dyson hairdryer is definitely worth it (can’t comment ont the airwrap though) I got the dryer for Christmas and for the first time in my life I can blow dry my hair and go without having to straighter or curl etc. I have really thick, wavy frizzy hair that always looks a mess and would take forever to dry and then style. I can now dry and go in 15 mins. I dry it normally the stick the smoothing attachment on for for couple of mins and done! I genuinely can’t believe how happy this has made me 😂. I was in the how can an expensive hairdryer be any better than a standard and if you have normal hair it probably might not make much difference but if you have thick or frizzy go for it!!

as an avid reader I also love my kindle.

FurForksSake · 14/01/2026 12:33

Kindle comes into its own when on holiday and you don’t have to worry about glare on your phone screen. Ylu can also get scrollers so you don’t have to physically scroll the pages.

Stream cleaner - don’t bother. Clothes steamer - do bother.

ebike - dh borrowed one from our council on a scheme and then got one on the cycle to work scheme. He’s a keen cyclist and loves it for longer journeys and commuting with less sweating!

FunnyDoginLahLahLand · 14/01/2026 12:33

I appreciate the kindle for how many books you can take on holiday, and that all the classics are super cheap or free, so I do use it.

But if I can, I still prefer reading a real book. I prefer the feel of a real book, the way it sits in my hand better, how I can instantly see how far through I am, and I prefer flicking forwards and backwards through real pages rather than on a screen.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

It does work :). I bought one when they were relatively new out, so I bet they're even better now!

(I don't actually use mine, but that's only because of the time it takes for each treatment.. it's quicker by far to just use a disposable razor once a week in the shower!)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/01/2026 12:34

I bought a steam cleaner and like a pp, have hardly ever used it. And when I did (bathroom tiles and a very grubby vinyl floor at a DD’s) the results were very disappointing.

They’re great get one. Pretty sure you can get some for under £100 or a refurbished one for even cheaper.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

I bought one years ago, used it consistently for a couple of years and then couldn't be bothered anymore. It definitely worked on some areas. I haven't used it in years and my legs are way less hairy than they ever were before, but some other areas like bikini and underarms are exactly as they were before. It's a bit of a faff though and it doesn't permanently get rid of your hair, maybe just lessens it. You also can't do it you've got fair hair, or dark skin.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 14/01/2026 12:36

@BatshitCrazyWoman - resounding yes from me on both air fryer and soup maker. Oven only gets used for huge things now, everything else goes in air fryer. Soup maker (Morphy Richards kettle style here, didn't like the Ninja) is in constant use throughout autumn and winter - despite not wanting one and cursing my husband for buying it, I love it and would replace immediately if it died.

@FurForksSake - I bought a pair of Celtic & Co Woodsman(?) boots. Utter rubbish, couldn't wear them if it was anything but bone dry.

Coffeeishot · 14/01/2026 12:36

Oh steam cleaner i have 1 and it is in the cupboard 😀 it started dripping water after a year.
