Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

I have a Dyson. It's fine but it just dries hair... Not really much more to say about it 😂

I have to agree with this. I have a lot of hair. Not technically thick but loads of it and I think it takes longer to dry and not 100 percent sure it’s worth the money.

Topjoe19 · 14/01/2026 11:38

Yes to the kindle, love mine so much - i can read at night & not disturb DH & it's light to hold.

I am debating buying a wedge cushion for my office chair - i have chronic back pain & sciatica & wondering if it would help with my sitting all day. I get up & walk as much as I can, also I have a standing desk but wondering if a cushion will help. If anyone has a recommendation that would be great!

Same here! I have a lot of fine hair (according to my hairdresser) but it's always just so flat and "meh".

Tbh I buy a lot of hair stuff thinking it will be a miracle cure and nothing has worked ever so I might just have to give up and stop wasting my money 😆

I also have a Dyson Airwrap which is different to the Dyson hairdryer. It is pretty marvelous and has smoothing and curling attachments. I would look out for it on QVC where they let you pay for it in three.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 14/01/2026 11:42

I have the Tefal Pop one and it's brilliant and I use it constantly. I'm going to get rid of my ironing board.

rainbowstardrops · 14/01/2026 11:43

Thanks to the posters who have said the Dyson hairdryer probably isn’t worth the money. I’ll stick with my current ‘normal’ hairdryer!
Back to the drawing board for ideas for my birthday!!!

SwallowsandAmazonians · 14/01/2026 11:44

I don't use my kindle but do use the kindle app on my phone.

I'm trying to decide whether taking collagen is worth it! It's expensive.

Oh really? Might look into that then!

Steam cleaner is good not great. Certainly helps with mobility problems. I got one with a cord as the advert was not clear- don’t make that mistake! You want it most in the bathroom where there are not sockets

ChaosCoordinator2 · 14/01/2026 11:49

A car costing over £8000 . Can't get past the fear that someone will drive into me as soon as i buy it and it will be written off.
My last car was £2000 from a friend and has lasted 10 years .
I have sleep band headphones and love them. Not been strangled yet!

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

I had one years ago, I did my legs, armpits and bikini line. It was amazing and so effective, it is a bit boring doing the treatments and you have to do them to a schedule and keep going with it. the areas I have done are totally smooth and hair free forever, and you don’t get those marks under the skin where hair follicles are as they are gone.

It was probably about 10 years ago and in that time I have done some top ups once a year but last year the laser broke and so I haven’t since then. I probably have to do a quick shave or epilate of some fluffy underarm hair and the odd rogue leg hair that has grown back about once every 4 months.

SurferRona · 14/01/2026 11:52

Try a reading app (I use BorrowBox) and borrow download books from your local library. I was also mithering about this and have now realised at home or away or holidays I prefer real books, I’d only read ebooks on my phone or tablet on trains etc. No kindle for me!

fuzzwuss · 14/01/2026 11:52

Kindle, Olaplex Nr 6, and Phillips Lumea are all really fab. The Lumea does need to be used a lot of times at first, as one or two hairs always seem to have escaped, but it really really works.

Dyson on the other hand was a xmas present for DD a few years back and was a complete waste.

Steam mops are crap. I’ve had one years and it’s no better than a regular mop and a lot more faff

Agreed!

Robovac is also useless as it gets itself wedged under the furniture or choked on the edge of a rug. We spent more time rescuing it than it spent cleaning.

takealettermsjones · 14/01/2026 11:54

People who have the Philips Lumea - does it work on underarm/bikini line hair?

My thing is a Lumie Bodyclock. I am absolutely not a morning person and I keep sleeping through alarms because I am not fully awake and press snooze loads of times. I've tried everything, different alarms, putting it on the other side of the room - I just get back in and fall asleep again. If I disable snooze then I just turn it off entirely and am late. I would love to break the snooze cycle!

People swear by steam cleaners, but honestly, I have never found them to be much use at all. I’ve had 3 different types, from cheapo to Shark uber fancy. They weren’t anywhere as good as taking a cloth to something.

I have shoulder length very fine thinning hair. It takes a couple of minutes to dry my hair. Would you say it’s better for thick hair like you have?

About the Dyson, I don’t really rate the air wrap as it’s hard to get the curls to hold. I just use mine as a hairdryer and don’t use the curling parts of it. The Dyson Airstrait is another matter altogether, if you straighten your hair it is flipping amazing. Lovely straight hair without too much heat, and it doesn’t give a flat look that you get with straighteners, I prefer a slightly more volume as I have very thin hair.

fuzzwuss · 14/01/2026 11:56

It does work on the bikini line, not tried underarm.

Smart meter here.
So many neighbours have issues.

I thought they were free ?

Robot vacuum
Another set of headphones to join my ever growing collection
The courage to donate about half my clothes as I don’t use them

Buy the robot vacuum. They won’t do as well as a proper vacuum, but for daily cleaning they are excellent. You won’t go wrong with a Eufy.

I am also a headphone collector!

With regards the expensive hair dryers, I brought my daughter a Shark hairdryer which also came with several hair styling tools. She loves it, she has long thick hair which comes to her bum and it has halved the drying time. Just in case this helps anyone.

SurferRona · 14/01/2026 11:56

Anyone used the Ziip halo? Does it work? All I can see online video reviews are either US or those in UK where it is a partnership with ziip #paidfor ad, and or users clearly have fillers and or Botox as well. Or are too young! I am now just 50s and sagging a bit, will halo work for me? SO expensive. I have the nuface and it’s a bit meh…

Gosh I am answering a lot of these, I do have a lot of gadgets ! I have a lumie bodyclock as I really struggle to wake up. It does wake me up as it has a really annoying alarm sound. When I am in a good sleep routine I do often wake up with the light before the alarm goes off which is a much nicer way to wake up. If I haven’t slept well like a late night, then I need the alarm. Also I sleep on my side and if I am on my side with my back to the light then it doesn’t wake me up !
I would recommend as I like it, but it is quite expensive so I would say to try to get one on sale, second hand or on Vinted or something to try it before you pay full price.

"The things I seem to need to iron are things that seem to get wrinkled just by being sat in my drawers!"

A magic bum de-wrinkler ! Where can I get one, & does it work elsewhere ?
Asking for a friend.
