Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Robot vac and mop!

PumpkinScarf · 14/01/2026 11:20

I can’t decide about an LED face mask. Never use my steamer. Robot vacuum is on every day. Use my kindle most days and I used to be anti-kindle but it’s just so much lighter and easier plus I like that I can turn the brightness right down but still see it so I can read it next to my baby without disturbing him. I tried olaplex once and it didn’t do much for my long fine hair.

An e-bike
My health is a bit shit now so I never cycle any more and I miss it.
But would i use it? Would it go on fire? Would i look stupid on it? What if run out for battery? What if I'm actually just lazy?

GameOfJones · 14/01/2026 11:21

I adore my Kindle and read it every day. It is so much nicer reading on a Kindle than on other screens like phones.... there's no comparison. It holds hundreds and hundreds of books, fits easily in my handbag and is great for travel and reading at night. The charge also lasts ages.

I've had my version for over 10 years and I'd really like to upgrade to the colour version but it's still going strong despite the daily use so I'm not replacing it yet.

Dyson air wrap

I have both and use them constantly. I would like to upgrade the steamer to one that uses suction but even my little cheapy one is great, and the kindle is just so convenient for reading on the go or in bed with its screen light, and as comfortable for the eyes as reading a book. My original Paperwhite lasted 10 years before I upgraded last year, and only then because I'd damaged the screen.

My "thing" is a Ninja Creami. I love ice cream but struggle to get flavours I really like as I don't eat chocolate, and would like to be able to use ice cream as a way of eating more protein. But it does seem like a lot of precious space to dedicate to a single use appliance, we don't have much freezer space either for pre-freezing the bowls, and it seems a bit gimmicky.

I use the kindle app for reading on the go and a bedside light for reading in bed, I used to take the kindle on holiday in the days when phones ran out of charge quickly and you didn't get battery packs but no need now.

Don't bother with the Dyson hairdryer, I have one and main advantage is that filter is in the handle and not at the back so my long hair doesn't get sucked in but thats not enough to warrant the cost.

Definitely get the Tymo Curl Pro (Plus version if hair shoulder length or longer), steam cleaner and clothes steamer.

Oh that’s interesting about the Dyson hairdryer. My niece has a Shark one I think and she swears by it but if it just dries hair, what’s so special?!

TheKateColumbo · 14/01/2026 11:24

Yes to the Lumea.

An LED face mask. I see loads of people online using them but I wonder if they actually do anything. I also fear I’d find it claustrophobic and not use it and have a slight concern it would explode on my face.

Sleep headphones on a band. My air pods hurt one ear and fall out but as above I’m worried I’ll hate the feeling of it and also it will somehow strangle me in my sleep.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 14/01/2026 11:24

I have a Kindle Paperwhite with a KleverCase. Love it and use it all the time.

Randomchat · 14/01/2026 11:24

I don't really like my e-readet. I have a kobo so I can borrow library books.
I seem to forget what the books are because you don't see the same bright cover pictures. The books all blend into one. But maybe that's just me, I've always got more than one book on the go at a time- one in the car, one by my bed, so J lose track

Stanley travel coffee cup
Steam mop
For anyone holding off on the robot vac..just do it! I love mine!

I love my Dyson hairdryer. I have really thick, frizzy hair and it dries it so fast and smooth compared to anything else I’ve used. My hairdresser thought I’d had it blowdried at another salon!

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 14/01/2026 11:28

I use a handheld steamer for windows for which it’s very good. They do make things wet though so I don’t use for other things.

Im considering The Dry Bar Double Shot hair styling brush. I have the Revlon version which is much cheaper and makes my hair look amazing… but it also damaged my hair and my hairdresser said it was leaving a band of thinned hair round my head! So if anyone has the Drybar version let me know!

Robot vac and mop!

I lived my robovac at first but it constantly kept getting stuck on shoe laces, the tassels on a rug etc. I find it easier to do it myself.

I have shoulder length very fine thinning hair. It takes a couple of minutes to dry my hair. Would you say it’s better for thick hair like you have?

Steam mops are crap. I’ve had one years and it’s no better than a regular mop and a lot more faff

Boododedoop · 14/01/2026 11:16

I’ve had mine for years and never had a problem with it. How do they go wrong.

Our smart meter works fine but it’s totally pointless for what I wanted as the display doesn’t work in the house.

EnchantingDaylight · 14/01/2026 11:32

Our robovac keeps sucking up the corner of doormats, rugs and the mat the cat food bowls sit on plus any stray shoelaces, cat toys or charger cables that have been left dangling. The cats don't like it much either, so it only gets used under supervision, I can't run it when we're out. It is good but not used as much as I had hoped.

rainbowstardrops · 14/01/2026 11:06

Shark or Dyson hairdryer. Are they really any better than my standard hairdryer? I have fine, brittle hair.
Not sure I can justify the cost.

I have a Dyson. It's fine but it just dries hair... Not really much more to say about it 😂

Starlight1979 · 14/01/2026 11:33

Robot vacuum here too but we have dogs and I know if I left it running then one of them would attack it so probably pointless in our house 🙈

Yeah shoes are a big problem here 🫣 usually mine!

On previous threads I’ve read it does seem to be the people with thick hair who love it.

Literally nothing. DH got me one for Christmas a couple of years ago as I kept going on about it. It's fine but it's literally a hairdryer. Albeit lighter and quieter I suppose.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

Another person to tell you that it do work for me. I’m a bit darker (not English) as I’m from Mediterranean descent. I have heard that it works better on people who have darker hair. I have barely any hair left now. And if you top up every winter then it lasts the year for sure.
