Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

I have both a kindle and a hand held steam cleaner and virtually never use either.

I have both and use both every day!

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

I just got the Kindle app on my phone. It's got a big screen and it's always with me-I read tonnes now!

People who have the Philips Lumea - does it work on underarm/bikini line hair?

My thing is a Lumie Bodyclock. I am absolutely not a morning person and I keep sleeping through alarms because I am not fully awake and press snooze loads of times. I've tried everything, different alarms, putting it on the other side of the room - I just get back in and fall asleep again. If I disable snooze then I just turn it off entirely and am late. I would love to break the snooze cycle!

Yes works on armpit and bikini line, it doesn’t work in more intimate areas where there are folds etc so wouldn’t replace intimate or Hollywood waxes, but is perfect and long lasting on the areas that would show outside or underwear or swimwear.
I do have dark hair and pale skin which is the colouring it is most effective for.

I used to do this for years before upgrading to an actual Kindle, both are great but Kindle is much easier on my eyes

Love my kindle!

But to anyone thinking of buying the shark, omg it is useless. I bought it thinking it’s cheaper than the Dyson, but even though my hair is wavy, and generally holds a curl - with the Shark the curls fall out so fast. Gutted because it looks so nice when it’s first styled, but no matter what mousse or products I use, it just will not stay. So shark is gathering dust unfortunately

Shinyandnew1 · 14/01/2026 12:04

For anyone holding off on the robot vac..just do it! I love mine!

Mine was a menace-it kept pulling on the edges of the carpet and managed to suck in one end and then about half an inch of carpet down the edge of my bedroom. I have not used it again and wouldn't recommend it anywhere near a carpet!

My DS is an avid reader and loved his kindle.

Until he realised that a book he had read/owned on kindle had been edited/censored afterwards and he realised he didn't really own it all and objected to them being able to alter his property.

He is back to books and never looked back.
He has found he loves having the actual books.
He reads more than anyone I know.

I must confess to being very anti kindle and pro actual book.
Although I listen to audio books on dog walk so I may lose moral high ground!

SpringsOnTheWay · 14/01/2026 12:07

I had a handheld steamer for cleaning.
pile of crap, just steamed and sanitised the dirt instead of getting rid of it.
I had a puppy, I was just steaming wee. Room stank.

for kindles try cex, they are all tested and have a warranty.

DancingNotDrowning · 14/01/2026 12:08

I use my handheld steamer (about £20 amazon) loads - but I only ever wear clothes that have been ironed/steamed. also love my kindle.

my dyson air wrap sits in a drawer (I prefer my babyliss big hair), my dyson hair dryer is great but possibly not better than one a tenth of the price.

I love my robo cleaner - it’s on everyday

my lumea was a waste of money

DD begged for a ninja creamy - must have been used twic. Waste of money and counter space

I don’t use my steam mop because I can’t be bothered, my cleaner won’t use it because she thinks they’re rubbish. See also my cordless Dyson.

Yes to the Lumea.

An LED face mask. I see loads of people online using them but I wonder if they actually do anything. I also fear I’d find it claustrophobic and not use it and have a slight concern it would explode on my face.

Sleep headphones on a band. My air pods hurt one ear and fall out but as above I’m worried I’ll hate the feeling of it and also it will somehow strangle me in my sleep.

For the sleep headphones, instead of ordering Snoozeband ones try Musicozy (on amazon). They come in at £15 to £30, depending on the model. I have two pairs and loved yhem on long flights. They're more comfortable on your ears in bed, but the feeling of the fabric headband annoys me sometimes.

You can download the kindle app on your phone, though, and read there?

WinterFrogs · 14/01/2026 12:12

I use my Kindle a lot. I don't have a steam cleaner so can't comment, but am considering one.

Thoughts on front and rear dash cams anyone?

I could never be without my kindle now. I have the most basic one. It’s brilliant. I read so much, and I love that it’s easy to transport wherever I go, and that I can download a new book in seconds. Definitely my best ever purchase.

Shark or Dyson hairdryer. Are they really any better than my standard hairdryer? I have fine, brittle hair.
Not sure I can justify the cost.

I have the Dyson hairdryer. It dries my hair much quicker (I have very thick curly hair) than a standard hairdryer, but it wouldn’t be worth it if my hair was thinner and dried quickly anyway. It doesn’t wow me. It’s just slightly more efficient.

godmum56 · 14/01/2026 12:17

I have had a few steam cleaners mostly intended for cleaning my tiled kitchen floor and walls. I never found any of them were any good and I did buy "quality" ones. I love love love my kindle paperwhite because its light to hold and I can carry multiple books everywhere with me. If you are intersted in an icecream/ frozen goody maker, I'd go for a Buffalo ice cream maker which has its own compressor so no bowl freezing. Yes it takes up quite a bit of worktop space and no it doesn't dispense like the ninja models but I think its better value for money. I am staving off having a smart meter for as long as I can. I see no value to me and yes, loads of reports of stuff going wrong and difficulties when switching.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/01/2026 12:17

A heat pump.

I’ve had mine for years and never had a problem with it. How do they go wrong.

Mine only works for the electric and not the gas. Same provider, British Gas. Had endless people to fix it and they can’t get the Gas to be smart whatsoever. So have to do readings for the gas, whereas the electric automatically updates BG every month. PITA

itsthetea · 14/01/2026 12:18

I love my kindle - and saves a fortune on new bookcases

it’s just a basic one

lighter and easier to manage and thousands of books at your fingertips

CautiousLurker2 · 14/01/2026 12:12

Phone screens are lit different / you can’t read a basic kindle in the dark unlike a phone

that means that the kindle is better for bedtime reading - it doesn’t have the light that disrupts sleep

Coffeeishot · 14/01/2026 12:23

I keep seeing a vibrating cleaning thing, it also has a handle that would do my tiles, i have nearly bought it twice, but it might be crap and sit in a cupboard because i wouldn't throw it out.

BeanQuisine · 14/01/2026 12:24

Various toilet brushes for my extensive collection.

A dealer has one that was allegedly the property of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Apparently stolen from the Kaiser's khazi when he went into exile in 1918.

He wants a pretty penny for it so I'm awaiting further authentication.

I have a steam cleaner. Never use it. I do have a cleaner now but didn’t use it before then either. My floors can’t use them on now either. I need to get rid of it really.

I have a kindle and use all the time. No space to have physical books and often use when I can’t put in lights etc. such as when breastfeeding a baby or getting a kid to sleep.

I held off buying a kitchen aid mixer for ages as so expensive but I got one in the deals and it’s so fantastic wish I’d gone for it earlier.

I also have a Dyson hairdryer. It’s ok but I have lots of hair and I don’t think it’s any quicker than any others I’ve used.

My boiling water tap is also amazing. Highly recommend.

I don’t have anything at the moment I am coveting but holding off on. Except maybe weight loss injections but that’s more because I want more kids and can’t do ivf with the medication.

EgonSpengler · 14/01/2026 12:25

I have a handheld steam cleaner and feel it's not as good a a proper iron.

I'm holding out on buying an Isabel Marant Oskan Hobo bag. Bloody expensive, but I love the look. Need to look IRL as some reviews have questioned the quality (for a designer bag).

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/01/2026 12:27

I had a handheld steam cleaner - it was rubbish. Wouldn't bother with one of those again. I don't have a clothes steamer, so can't comment.

I love my paper white kindle, and use it every day. I read actual physical books, too.

My 'thing', well, two things really, is an air fryer, and also a soup maker. I've been thinking about whether to buy both of these things for ages!
