Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

Insidelaurashed · 14/01/2026 10:19

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

It’s amazing, I’ve not had to shave my legs or underarms for a few years and I’ve not had to redo it after the initial few times. Well worth it.

I bought a Beldry 3 in 1 recently for my partner. Its a iron / steams and can convert to a hand held steam dryer. Didn't feel very heavy for me when I checked it on delivery.

Have a look at it on their website s to see if the weight is ok for you. He's happy with it for work shirts etc.

Tymo hair curler.

I looked at it, and now my social media feeds are flooded with the ads. I have fine, brittle, menopausal hair, and I’m worried it’ll be detrimental for that. But would love an easy solution to getting some volume into my hair with very little time required!

I can recommend the heatless curl solutions in M&S (mine was £20) - you wrap your hair around the thing then sleep in it (it's comfortable). Perfect curls/waves in the morning that last a couple of days and no damage to your hair.

Umbilicat · 15/01/2026 16:38

Tymo works brilliantly

Airwrap is even better imo and less damaging to your hair, but it does take a while to master and is obviously way more expensive

rainbowstardrops · 15/01/2026 17:33

Thank you for this! I have lots to research! I’m thinking maybe the standard Dyson hairdryer won’t be for me.

Mine are in 50 litre pots like this one so the answer is both yes and no. If you want to use smaller pots you will need to choose smaller cherries, by which I don't just mean smaller specimens, I mean trees that won't grow so tall. This is both to give the tree enough root room and also to make sure that its stable in windy weather. Pot it in decent soil, the best you can get is John Innes number 3 but if you can't get hold of any then something made for roses trees and shrubs.
If you want something smaller and don't mind a pale flower then kojo no mai is pretty and won't break the bank.

Brilliant, thank you, very helpful.

It's a 70cm x 60cm pot for a Prunus Accolade which comes as a bare root. Fingers crossed.

Miniature pony but it would be living in our garage until can find a suitable stables. Undecided if I should get that or something bigger I can ride

Please don't put a pony in the garage even for a short time !
They need the company of other horse and are a lifetime commitment some breads can easily live to 20 yrs old .
If you are thinking of getting a Shetland remember there is a very good reason why they get called Shitlands by their owners.

These sort of work. They thin the hair and make it more sparse but you have to keep topping up and if you don’t the hair gradually comes back more. I’m getting a wax tomorrow to keep on top of re growth. It’s sort of been worth it. Nowhere near as good as the salon IPL.

My DS is an avid reader and loved his kindle.

Until he realised that a book he had read/owned on kindle had been edited/censored afterwards and he realised he didn't really own it all and objected to them being able to alter his property.

He is back to books and never looked back.
He has found he loves having the actual books.
He reads more than anyone I know.

I must confess to being very anti kindle and pro actual book.
Although I listen to audio books on dog walk so I may lose moral high ground!

I use my kindle with DRM free books which Amazon don’t own. You can also back up the books outside of the store’s system in which case they can delete them from the system/your account but you still have a copy.

Thank you. You're most likely right it's just when I went to view the pony I instantly fell in love and have always wanted one. I did plan to walk it every day and the garage is insulated and has running water and I know someone who is a hey dealer

Can anyone tell us which robot vac they bought? Im really keen on one that vacs and mops but i just can't decide and some are very very expensive .

I have this one. It’s amazing for hoovering and wiping the kitchen floor. It’s def more a wipe than a scrub but perfect for keeping on top of dirt every day as we have a very pale grey floor. It has a smallish dust box which needs emptying every couple of weeks you notice when it’s full as it leaves a trail of crumbs in its docking position when it leaves as a reminder.

I’ve had it 5 years but I don’t think it’ll last much longer as it seems to have a ‘my bumper is stuck’ issue which I can’t work out how to fix. Still has great suction tho.

Have you ever had any dealings with horses before you cant just feed it hay ?.
They can not be treated like big dogs.
They NEED equine company. They also need to go out and be able to kick their heels up walking it up the road would be dangerous for both of you.
They need a knowledgeable vets and they cost a bomb.
It's a long time since I have been around horses but
Bedding - straw / wood shavings/ paper , what are you going to do with all the manure ?
Insurance £ christ knows nowadays
Vets call out - £80/100 before they set foot out of their car
Blacksmith £60 shoes, £30 trim every 6 to 8 weeks
Very basic horse feed around £15 - 20kg ( but this is the equivalent to feeding your dc fish fingers and chips everyday)
Supplements depending what it needs anything between £10 - £100 per month
Passports
Rugs, buckets , grooming kits , hay nets, all of which need replacing annoying often.

The day to day grind , mucking out, grooming, clipping,
You don't get a day off , ever !
Think about what would happen if you are ill / injured/ on holiday .

I would really really recommend you go to the local good standard livery yard and speak to a few owners , ask them how much they spent on their horse / pony over the last year

This is a very basic list , there will be loads more to consider.
Perhaps go over to the mn tackroom page and read a few post.

I’ve realised reading this thread I’ve clearly been swayed by soo much 😂

Dyson hairdryer - I’d replace mine instantly if it broke. It is just a hairdryer but when you use a different brand you realise how decent it actually is.

Dyson air wrap - I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. My daughter uses it more than me. I
should just give it to her.

Dyson stick cleaner - useless. I hate it.

Steam cleaner - I didn’t understand how it was making life easier. Everything was wet and needed cleaning up.

Heated Airer - I use mine all the time in winter. Brilliant.

Water Flosser - I think it’s great, but it takes getting used to.

Ice -cream maker - pointless. I should get rid of it to free up space.

Kindle - I liked it but left it on a plane and haven’t rushed to replace.

LED face mask - love it. And the blue light on mine has helped teenage acne on my 18yr old.

I often wonder about a robot hoover, still not committed.

Which LED face mask do you recommend?

Creatine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7998865/

lots and lots of studies, i take 3000mg daily. As anything being consistent with it is key. It definitely helps with muscle soreness but it has lots of benefits that you might not notice.

Interesting you say consistency is key. So I o intention days I exercise. But should I take it daily despite activity? Which one do you take please? My one is a dissolve one that tastes rank and I don’t take the full dose because I think it irritates my kidneys

If you love it, let it go to a better home than you can give it. I mean I thought you were joking!

I do take collagen but not a powder advertised by celebs. I take a multi collagen with five types of collagen in it. Apparently you have to take it consistently over a prolonged period or it to have an effect.

I take creatine too, everyone should be on that and the vitamin d I think.

if you do opt to try collagen you apparently need to take it with vitamin c for it to activate properly.

Which collagen do you take? I want one!!!

Please don't! If you are going to get a pony, you need to make sure you sort out what it needs, and find suitable accommodation for it with people who know what they are doing, first!. And the lifestyle and cost breakdown above is scarily accurate

Ok thank you, no I didn't know it would involve all that as never kept a horse before, but this is a much smaller pony. I didn't think it would need shoes if ground was soft

I was going to use the wonky vegetables box for food. I didn't think about a vet no as pony is in such good help. I was going to put the pony waste in garden for furtilizer and the bin if needed

I'm going to visit the pony one more time, probably to say good bye as not suitable but will take a tape measure too as the garage is a double

I am really hoping you are just joshing us, but on the off chance you're not, or for anyone else reading:
Miniature ponies are still ponies and need treating as such. Some of your wonky veg could poison it or give it colic. Minis run the risk of laminitis, a horribly painful and potentially fatal condition (look it up)
They still need vaccinations, worming ( with appropriate wormer) and their teeth seeing to by a professional. These little ones are particularly prone to mouth deformities and overcrowding of their teeth. Wouldn't need shoes, but would need a registered farrier to trim the feet ( did you know that their hooves are like are nails and keep growing?) They have very delicate digestive system and lots can go wrong if they are kept in inadequate conditions.

Try taking a small untrained pony for walks and it'll end up either refusing to move or head off down the road, dragging you along ( they are a lot stronger than an similar sized dog) and probably kicking up it's heels and kneecapping you as it barges past, leaving you sitting an you backside nursing rope burns and bruises while it goes off and causes carnage among the traffic. Horses ( even the little ones) are insanely accident prone, however healthy they are. So please, if you love this pony, do as @godmum56 says and let someone who knows what they are doing have it.
