Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Oh that’s interesting about the Dyson hairdryer. My niece has a Shark one I think and she swears by it but if it just dries hair, what’s so special?!

I have the Shark and it's great- it holds hair really taut in the round/oval brush you get a super smooth blow dry without much effort (I have fine hair). I'd recommend getting the one you 'build' yourself (ie you choose which attachments you want) as it's cheaper and you're not paying for attachments that you won't use.

Can’t edit my post now but I see @muddyford has mentioned Air purifiers. Please tell me more!

also love my boiling water tap - life changer!

Builders and trades are making an extremely good living in that part of the country right now, don’t expect renovations to come under 400k excluding outside landscaping and driveways and not allowing for any further extensions.

Even if you contract all individual trades yourself I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the more in demand trades like plumbers and electricians effectively have a day rate near £600 priced into their quote so it will be very pricey. Basically well thought out and refurbished places in this part of the country definitely cost at least as much if not slightly less right now than if you started a project from scratch yourself. So if fancy old properties in the country would normally be 1.5million in good condition then don’t think buying crappy is going to stack up and save you money.

Not sure about Dyson hairdryer I bought my 1st one on QVC in 2020 for £300 on 5xeasy pays! Then I have purchased another from qvc as the original kept cutting out and it was £200 on a tsv 5x easy pay!
Love a Dyson hoover.
Would like a robot hoover and mop.
GS uses kindle and loves it when I used it to read his story I got loads more read than faffing with turning pages of a real book. He flies through books so would highly recommend but as a book purchased collector keeper I haven't got one I like the clutter.

Don’t think anyone answered about heated Airers. Are they any good? Particularly the Aldi one?

FurForksSake · 15/01/2026 15:16

We have an ancient heated airer from Lakeland. It’s 13 years old and still going. We often don’t turn it on and just use it as an airer. I wouldn’t replace it, I’d buy a dehumidifier and a normal airer.

cloudjumper · 15/01/2026 15:18

Tymo hair curler.

I looked at it, and now my social media feeds are flooded with the ads. I have fine, brittle, menopausal hair, and I’m worried it’ll be detrimental for that. But would love an easy solution to getting some volume into my hair with very little time required!

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 15/01/2026 15:35

Thank you @godmum56 & @exse24Londoner ,
Will check the website out.

Would they do well in a big pot?

Must stop dithering and get one.

mamansloth · 15/01/2026 15:35

I’ve realised reading this thread I’ve clearly been swayed by soo much 😂

Dyson hairdryer - I’d replace mine instantly if it broke. It is just a hairdryer but when you use a different brand you realise how decent it actually is.

Dyson air wrap - I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. My daughter uses it more than me. I
should just give it to her.

Dyson stick cleaner - useless. I hate it.

Steam cleaner - I didn’t understand how it was making life easier. Everything was wet and needed cleaning up.

Heated Airer - I use mine all the time in winter. Brilliant.

Water Flosser - I think it’s great, but it takes getting used to.

Ice -cream maker - pointless. I should get rid of it to free up space.

Kindle - I liked it but left it on a plane and haven’t rushed to replace.

LED face mask - love it. And the blue light on mine has helped teenage acne on my 18yr old.

I often wonder about a robot hoover, still not committed.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

This was me. I got the Braun one last March. I have pale skin and dark hair - chin hairs are no more and I rarely shave my armpits, legs maybe once every 3 weeks (I need to use the thing on them more regularly again - I kind of stopped after the 8 weeks). Bikini line still needs a tidy but less (no longer daily when on holiday). Wish I’d done it years ago. I got a £900 for £400 in a sale. It still felt a lot!

Robot vacuum
Another set of headphones to join my ever growing collection
The courage to donate about half my clothes as I don’t use them

Get the robot vac but spend a bit more and get one that maps the floor. Love mine!

llamashoe · 15/01/2026 15:44

Can anyone tell us which robot vac they bought? Im really keen on one that vacs and mops but i just can't decide and some are very very expensive .

Isabelle70 · 15/01/2026 15:48

I had an old grey kindle and received a new paper white one for Christmas last year. I use it more for holidays and in the summer.
I am sneaky, I do the free Kindle unlimited, download all the books, put it in flight mode and cancel the subscription. As long as it stays in flight mode the books stay on the Kindle:)
I have a steam cleaner, which I do not use but not as much as I could. I always fine the attachments are a nuisance to store.

TinyCottageGirl · 15/01/2026 15:48

I have a steam cleaner and probably use it once a year... it's not as good as it looks in the videos and is a bit of a faff to set up

I've a wonderful ornamental weeping cherry tree - it blossoms beautifully with absolutely no input from me....... well, I chat to it & tell it how glorious it is but thats all since it was planted in clay soil 6 years ago

DH would love one - and I need plants that thrive on neglect.

slipperypenguin · 15/01/2026 15:50

I got eufy but it was SHITE

Mine is a roomba J7 purchased in a black Friday sale 50% off, so look out for sales.

I also love my shark flex (one that put the attachments on) and its about half the price of a dyson. I have curly and relatively course hair and it works well.

The things I have and like...

Airfryer - basically a mini oven. We use ours all the time, especially when just cooking for one. I recommend one with two drawers that can be programmed independently of each other.

Karcher Window Vac - I use it to keep my shower panels clean. We live in a hard water area so a daily quick vac keeps them free of the scale build up.

Ninja Creami - got one for DD for Christmas and she's loving it. It's noisy for sure, and a bit of a faff with having to pre-freeze stuff. DD is enjoying experimenting though. However, I do wonder if it will be a five minute wonder.

What I don't like much....

Steam mop - it seems to get my floor tiles clean but I don't think it really works great on the grouting between the tiles which always looks grubby.

What I'm considering..

I have a Ring doorbell which is ok, but being outside it gets condensation and blurs any video footage. I'm interested in one of those small cameras that fix to the inside of a window. They're protected from the elements and can't be tampered with by anyone up to no good. Does anyone have one and have any comments?

Agree with the Karcher window vac, bloody brilliant thing! We have sliding glass doors that go all across the back of the house, takes me ten minutes to do inside and out! Without the karcher it’d be hell of a lot longer!

Mine are in 50 litre pots like this one so the answer is both yes and no. If you want to use smaller pots you will need to choose smaller cherries, by which I don't just mean smaller specimens, I mean trees that won't grow so tall. This is both to give the tree enough root room and also to make sure that its stable in windy weather. Pot it in decent soil, the best you can get is John Innes number 3 but if you can't get hold of any then something made for roses trees and shrubs.
If you want something smaller and don't mind a pale flower then kojo no mai is pretty and won't break the bank.

I also have the philips lumea and it is absolutely worth it! I use it every few weeks in the winter months and I am baby smooth all summer. It's amazing!
