Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

Insidelaurashed · 14/01/2026 10:19

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Air purifier.

Love the small rechargable lights for stairs and landing.Great for when need to get up in the night. Rechargable. Bought on Amazon.

Really want a smart watch mainly for steps but any extras a bonus. Can't decide, too much choice. Any recommendations please..

I love a gadget but if they don't get used I pass them on.

I've bought a Dyson Airwrap 3 times (always hoping the newest update would be the charm ). I sold the first two on Ebay for what I paid for them. I'm hanging on to the last one because my adult DD loves it and uses it when she visits but for my very thick, but very soft, silky hair it's useless. It gives. Lovely puffy blow dry that drops and goes limp in half an hour.

I love my Kindle. I 've had one for 15 years now. I was always a big reader and thought I'd miss the smell/feel of books but I absolutely don't. I've given away about 2000 books since I bought my first kindle and now carry my entire collection around in a small handbag. It's so convenient.

Robovacs are good. My robot mop is useless. Leaves smears all over the tiled floors.

Steam cleaner and mops are also pretty useless. They sterilise things well but like the Robo Mop they leave them streaky and watermarked.

I'd be interested in recommendations for a Reformer Pilates machine. Most of the year I live in a city and do Pilates 4/5 times a week at the many studios available but a few weeks a year we stay in my husband's country of origin in the absolute middle of nowhere. I'd love a nice smooth sturdy machine I could use when we are there but they are too expensive to buy in spec. I really need some independent opinions on which ones are good.

I’ve had both a Dyson and a Shark hairdryer. Dyson was fantastic until it wasn’t. After 3 years use it cut out every time it overheated - I have short hair so it was on less than 10 mins, filters cleaned regularly. WIth the Shark I use the smoothing attachment - but it tends to fall off sporadically and is so blimmin hot it’s nigh on impossible to reattach it without 3rd degree burns.

My dilemma is a wig. My hair is v. thin on top - so bad that I avoid sitting under lights in case I shine and I wear a hat/cap whenever I can too. I don't know where to start looking seriously; buying online seems so risky for fit, style appearance etc.

Edited

Hi @Jaxhog , not an issue for me (yet!) but could be worth speaking to your hairdresser about this. Last time I was in my hairdresser the owner was talking about a piece she was wearing to address this issue re her own hair and with a view to trying it out to help some other salon clients. All I know is that she called it a system (it wasn’t permanent like extensions etc) and she had her hair in a ponytail. It looked amazing. If she hadn’t have told me, I’d have never thought for a moment that it wasn’t all her hair. Always worth speaking to the experts on these things!

I held off buying Lumea for years. Phillips let you pay in instalments and if it doesn’t work you can send it back and stop paying (it’s like hiring as they don’t refund you for the month/s you’ve already paid. For me it was a total game changer- wish I’d done it years ago. I’m Mediterranean with v dark hair but quite pale skinned. Bikini line, legs and lip now pretty much bald!

my query is the Eufy that mops. I’ve got the vacuum and it’s fab - is the mopping version any good?

I have both Eufys . The mop one is awful. We have dark, shiny tiles and whilst the Eufy takes off a lot of dirt, it leaves sticky, smeary mop marks all over the floor. I have to spray and buff the floors to remove the marks which is as much work as cleaning it normally would be. It cost an absolute fortune, takes up a great delmof space and is absolutely useless. And it's too heavy to sell on EBay.

If anyone on here wants to make me an offer and pick it up from South London please , please PM me!

I thought about buying a bread maker for years. Have now done so - second hand and only £30 but barely used - and I am SO pleased I did.

cozycat1 · 14/01/2026 18:41

Things I'd recommend if based on my experience after thinking about: air fryer, frui/veg juicer, ninja blender. Also agree Olaplex 3 is good and even better when used eith Olaplex 0
Have a Dyson hair dryer but cant say it makes my hair look much better, prob just down to my hair type though which is thin and short.
Would not recommemd Hotel Chocolat Velvitiser-waste of money! Stick to powder stuff and a mug and kettle.
Interested in opinions on Led masks as thats next for me to consider.

Laura Geller baked make up. Is it worth the money or is it all hype?

I'm 55 with skin that can't take liquid foundation anymore and I use this and it's great. I use it as a foundation and powder. Lasts for ages too.

No don't bother. They make a clean surface hygienic but won't actually remove dirt. I got one and realised what a waste of time it was early on.

Olaplex is 100% worth it. Mine was fried and never grew past my shoulders until I started using it about 2 years ago. Now it's down almost to my waist.
Wet hair and leave it on all evening, wash out the next day. I use a out 3 small bottles a year x

Which number do you use for this?

Benazcap seat cushion from Amazon has been a game changer for my husband. He's now got 2 for the 2 chairs in his study. He damaged his back years ago and can't sit in an ordinary chair. He used to walk around during board meetings before he retired as sitting on an ordinary chair gives him pain. He also has a Stressless chair (very good) and a standing desk.

Thank you for your reply 😊

I looked at the Velvetiser but the handwashing put me off. I have got a 30 quid stainless steel milk drink maker from amazon. Its not as pretty as a velvetiser but the cup, lid and frother all go on the dishwasher and if you rinse it out immediately you serve the drink, a rinse under the tap leaves it clean. This is the one. 3 years old and still looks like new. There is a more expensive one that heats 500ml of milk, mine heats 300. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08XSJQ7LG?ref=ppxhzsearchconndtbfedasintitle1&th=1

I had wigs when I had cancer treatment. I was amazed at how good they looked. I searched online for a local salon that specialised. I contacted them in advance and made an appointment, she wanted to know what my hair was like and what I wanted so she could have some choices ready.
I took a friend who was under orders to be brutally honest and not flattering.
I tried several on and picked one close in colour to my own hair. It did look good. In fact I was looking at a photo last week taken in the wig and I didn't realise immediately. It wasn't cheap.
Wearing it was another matter. It was a good fit and not uncomfortable but it was hot and I only wore it when going "out".

Huxhux · 14/01/2026 19:18

Eufy 10 vac and mop - saved my husband, daughter and dogs lives - I do not rage clean anymore!
I was so snobby about a Kindle until I had to pay extra baggage for all the books I took on holiday - now I can read in bed without disturbing my husband and get the next book immediately!
I had the lumea but found it a bit hit and miss however the Silkn is fantastic and it works on dark skin and light hairs too - much more effective than the lumea - only have odd stragglers now and I used to get 5 o clock shadow before!!!
Ninja 5000 in 1 thingy - massive and takes up so much space in the cupboard and we only use the slow cooker!
Waterpik is amazing - use warm water though!
Electric car is fab - we have a hybrid for longer journeys though!
Cannot recommend a magnifying mirror with a light enough - terrifying at first but then you won’t ever be without it!
Caravan nice in theory but not real life - think living in a muddy shed with a Doberman!!!
I do reformer pilates twice a week and wonder wether I would use one at home - any recommendations for one that you can keep under the bed please?

I heard that they tie you into a particular supplier for starters, which puts me off. Also heard about them providing inaccurate readings. My DM is an 'environment zealot' (did academic research on them), and even she advises against!
Happy you've had a positive experience though.

The early ones did, Government stepped in, later ones cannot be tied to one supplier.

Love our robo vac/mop
Holding off on a tymo waver as I don't know if it would work on my thick, frizzy shoulder length hair

it works like magic on my frizzy, thick hair!

LoftyPlumLion · 14/01/2026 19:33

Can’t help on steam cleaner but I do know that I’m three for three purchases from TikTok (well Instagram threads to be precise) that have said they’ll change my life and yet are no better or worse than supermarket stuff.

ar least do more research into the right one outside of rickety rock

@Onefortheroad25 I have a Stanley travel coffee cup and it’s amazing!!!!

https://amzn.eu/d/1GrfT9l

its absolutely bomb proof - didn’t leak even when it tipped upside down somehow in my bag, when I knocked it over on my desk at work and keeps my drinks scalding hot for hours and hours.

I thought it was a ridiculous amount to spend on a coffee cup but having actually used it now im a convert

That’s the one in my Amazon basket! In a light baby pinkish colour.

Hartleyhare1206 · 14/01/2026 19:53

No way!!

I’ve got the Barbie pink one as it was chosen by my 9 yr old DD 🤣🤣
If I’m being picky I’d prefer the larger size as the standard one is the equivalent of a “normal” mug I’d use at home; and I’d prefer a bigger drink that lasts longer at work or when out and about. But as it was a gift I’d never expect someone to spend over £40 on a travel cup for me.

i made myself a drink in it at 8am and I haven’t finished it as I accidentally left it in the car 🤣🤦‍♀️ when I chucked it away at 6pm I tried a bit and it was still warm and drinkable - after 10 hours!

I have no clue how it doesn’t leak but it’s exactly what I need as I’m a dropper/spiller🤣

I have the Dyson and no, it’s not hugely different to a standard hairdryer!

It dries my really thick hair super fast. Mine was a present,I don't know if I'd replace it or go back to a Parlux, I love the way the nozzle can twist and doesn't get hot.

My hairdresser does this i think they are cliip in but they use springs rather than clips

A worktop dishwasher, they look like the answer to my prayers, I loathe washing up, have no space to have one that can be plumbed in and have lots of worktop space so it could sit right by my sink. I am at the stage of doing lots of online research and they look almost too good to be true!

30 years ago in my tiny galley kitchen, I bought a worktop dishwasher - and loved it

A Bosch , 4 placements , I never put saucepans in and with just two of us put it on every other day - 1/2 tablet as well

Washed everything really really well

It was just a joy to throw everything in the dishwasher ( even if not switching on ) and leaving a clean tidy kitchen . Even now Ive a big dishwasher, I still hand wash pots
